Who says you can’t have a beach getaway in a spa? Say aloha to summer at ‘Vacation in a Spa’! A week ago, I hosted a spa party at Mary Chia Tampines with a beach theme titled, ‘Vacation in a Spa’! Before I go into the juicy deets of the party, let’s check out this video first. Haha.. Noticed the diverse group of party guests of all ages playing games, having fun and chilling out? Besides my closest friends and supportive readers, I’ve invited the women of my clan too – my mom, grandma, aunties and cousins. This party has a special meaning to me. I wouldn’t be able to come this far without the ardent support of my lovely family and my best friends. Juggling work and writing on this blog is no easy feat. Many times, I find strength during stressful times through my family’s support and their words of encouragement. Let’s start filling in your spa party card with treatment stamps! May I present your first treatment of the evening- Hand Paraffin Treatment. First dip your hand into the melted paraffin wax. Wrap hands with cling film and wait for about 10 minutes for wax to dry. The cling film retain the heat for a longer period of time and this maximizes the heat benefits for joint pain and stiffness. After 10 minutes, remove cling wrap and peel off wax. And voila! Soft and silky smooth hands! Let’s move on to the next station – BMI Test! Mary Chia’s BMI Test is a Body Composition Analyzer. It helps us understand what is going on inside our bodies by categorizing weight into muscle mass, water, and body fat. This is Crystal – my beauty consultant for my Mary Chia Facial Treatment. After the test, Crystal explained to each guest the implications of an unsatisfactory Body Mass Index (BMI) and suggested ways they can improve their weight scores. Come, follow me! This is the cosy chillout area of the salon. Bored of chilling? Check out Mary Chia’s signature products displayed near the reception and chillout area. You never know what goodies you might discover! The ultra-retro corridor that oozes contemporary style: everything was orange, fresh and gorgeous. Glistening glitters could be spotted everywhere in the salon. Then I was asked to place my stuff in the lockers. Wow, I thought that was pretty thoughtful. Usually, I’ll place my stuff near the massage bed which of course is not the safest place as my eyes are closed half the time. Well, not only do they offer lockers but… Wait for it… Our stuff are also secured by fingerprint locks! Ultimate thoughtfulness. Then I was introduced to the massage room where party guests of ‘Vacation in a Spa’ would get to enjoy free massages and paraffin hand treatments. Next, I was brought to my room where I’ll get to enjoy the beauty treatments. The signature Mary Chia towels. All ready to indulge in my 2 hour beauty treatment! Before the treatment, I was given a skin analysis by Mary Chia’s beauty consultant, Crystal. This is to ensure that the products and services chosen are suitable for my skin type and condition. After the analysis, Crystal concluded that even though the nature of my skin is oily, it is still deficient in water and this can lead to wrinkles. She decided that a a Collagen Lifting Facial and an eye repair treatment will be ideal to revive my tired and dehydrated skin. So I lied on the comfortable massage bed as Mary Chia beauty therapist , L, awakened my skin with a nice face and scalp massage. The massage was very relaxing and soothing. I could feel the accumulated tension slowly leaving my body and mind. Alright and the treatment begins proper. This is my totally bare naked face. L cleansed, exfoliated and steamed my face before she extracted the stubborn blackheads from it. Then she gently stroked my skin with a device known as Ultra-sonic to apply a hydrating lotion onto my skin. I was curious as to why a machine was used to apply the lotion to my face instead of just applying it directly to the skin. Let me guess. Another form of massage therapy? Can you guess why too? Well, Crystal explained that this machine breaks the molecules in the lotion into smaller particles so that they are small enough to penetrate into the skin. In this way, the lotion will be fully absorbed by the skin. Wow, why didn’t I think of that. Next, I was treated with soothing and cold crystal balls that massaged and calmed my ‘traumatized’ skin (trauma from the extractions earlier). This treatment helped to promote blood circulation and close up the enlarged pores from the steaming. Then L proceeded to massage the area around my eyes to reduce puffiness. Yup, my eye repair treatment has began. I was reintroduced to the Ultra-sonic facial tool but this time it comes with a different treatment tip. The device and hydration liquid used was the same as the last one. The only difference was the smaller tip as the areas of application this time were smaller. After tweezing my eyebrows, L patted a few masks on my face. Here goes! As I waited for my mask to dry, L gave me a another firm scalp massage. Absolutely heavenly. After 20 minutes… The face mask hardened to form this.. L pummeled my tense shoulders one last time before she ended the facial treatment. Tada! Refreshed and polished! Overall, my skin felt hydrated, healthier and smoother. No more unsightly bumps! My only gripe was the redness caused by the extractions. However, the extraction technique was so skillful that there was minimal inflammation two days after the treatment. I probably only saw two inflamed pores on the side of my face. Usually there’ll be tons of inflamed pores after a facial. After a week, my skin tone was also evened out. So I guess the extractions were all the better for it. Since I still had credits left, I redeemed them for a RadianX Phototherapy (RXP) underarm treatment. RXP is dubbed the first pain-free light-based therapy that clears up acne and removes unwanted hair. It requires no pre-treatment procedures, numbing or treatment down-time. It sounds like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment except it is painless. However, I was shocked the first time I used it as the machine sucked my skin lightly before blasting the light energy. Here’s the wonder maker… According to the therapist, the machine will remove unsightly hair and whiten the underarms. Results may not be immediate though. I’ve done similar treatments before so my underarms are free of hair. Though I still look forward to fairer underarms. 😛 After the treatment, I was served a cup of fresh-brewed ginger tea to detoxify and warm my body. It can get quite chilly in the massage rooms. By the way, ginger is great for the body, especially the stomach. It eases digestion and calms an upset stomach pronto. Just when I thought my beauty treatment had come to an end, Crystal presented me a bottle of Age-Defying Hydrating Lotion, a popular product from their house brand. Now my skin is truly on a path to perfection… More about this baby in my next beauty review. Advertorial Should men get manicures too? Absolutely! I mean why not? Men should indulge as much as we girls do. Men may not get manicures for the same vanity reasons, but doing so will elevate their hygiene cred and help them maintain a clean and trimmed appearance. Don’t we all agree that manicures are great stress relievers too? The mini-massage component and casual conversations with the manicurists always help me find the calm that I missed during my busy work days. Moreover, a neat and clean manicured look projects a polished appearance and indicates that the guy takes pride in his appearance (which is highly commendable). Okay, so manicures improve personal hygiene and appearances and give men their moments of relaxation. For those awesome reasons, I decided to bring my boyfriend, B, to a nail salon to get his nails manicured. 😛 Here’s a pictorial story of the process and the struggle… Me: Let’s go shopping! Me: Wait, stop! B: Eh.. why are we stopping? B (thinks): Great. I’ll have to wait hours again for her to get her nails done. Me: Ewww… What ugly nails you have! We need to do something about those unkempt nails. B: They do look kinda bad. Me: Let’s go get a manicure! B: Eh… what? Now I’m getting the manicure???!! He saw the glint of excitement in her eyes and coyishly said… ‘Ok.’ Me: Whoopie!! I walked up the stairs while his reluctance filled the air… And here we are at Nail indulgence De Beau. Amber Toga Dress – Head turner or head twister? A Honeyz Belle suggested reviewing the Agneselle’s Amber Toga Dress since I bought one too. So here it is! 😀 Click to view in AE’s website Afterthoughts… Every woman needs a little black dress (LBD) in their wardrobe and if you haven’t got one yet, consider this glamorous thigh length number which will definitely carve out the Coco Chanel in you. Just look at it! The gorgeous ruched sides, embellished details and trendy toga style! The dress looks gorgeous in real life as it produces an hourglass silhouette on the wearer. However, I think it can feel quite tight on UK 6 and above, especially if you are pear-shaped like me. The material is thick and weighty but without much finesse. The dress rides up as I walk and hugs my thighs uncomfortably when I sit. I think the hem is not stretchable even though the rest of the dress is. The dress comes in teal and pink too. These two colors are not the best choice for ‘bloated days’ as the design of the dress is not the most ‘bulgy-belly-friendly’. Black will make the best choice if you want to obscure the appearance of a protruding tummy. I did not wash the dress before I wore it the first time and the color from the fabric was transferred to my nails. Unsightly! Despite these downers, I’m still a huge fan of the dress as it is pretty enough for me to wear it without adornments and great for party occasions and that hot date! The craftsmanship is also top-notch as none of the embellishments loosen after its first wash. 3.5 Honeyz crowns for its effortless style and great quality! I’m extremely happy (even though I’ve not won any awards :P) because the Singapore Blog Awards (SBA) is one of the most prestigious and reputable of blog awards. So to be nominated by the committee is a great honor to me. It’s like all that hard work that I’ve put in, these past 11 months, has finally paid off and as you probably already know, recognition always feels good. 🙂 I’m also very glad to be given an opportunity to learn new beauty tips from the other finalists (who are veteran beauty bloggers) as well as the beauty experts at Mary Chia (Official Sponsor of SBA Beauty Category). In all, I can’t wait to experience this amazing journey with the rest of the girls and see where this competition can take me. 2. When did you start blogging and what drew you to it? Where do you get inspiration for your blog content? Well, I started writing this blog last June. I’ve always been a beauty junkie but things took a turn earlier last year when I tried to get over a heart-wrenching break up. Nothing worked and instead I got more despondent and that was reflected in my appearance. The health of my skin deteriorated and I lost motivation to doll up. My family noticed the changes and pointed them out to me. I felt guilty that I made them worry so I decided to pick myself up quickly. I perked up my dress sense and improved my beauty routine. The internet was my beauty encyclopedia. I googled whenever I needed skin care tips or fashion advice. However, I could never find a website that is dedicated to beauty product reviews and beauty tips for South East Asian skin. South East Asians experience different weather conditions and have different eating habits from the rest of Asia and the world so generic beauty tips might not work on us. So I began to look for my own beauty formula and products and I think they probably worked because my family and friends took notice of the ‘new me’ and began to come to me for beauty and fashion advice. Soon I became their “Resident Beauty Guru”. Haha! My friends are also aware of this deficit in the beauty blogosphere and so they encouraged me to start a blog of this nature to share my beauty tips for South East Asians and my take on different beauty and fashion products and services in the market. So ‘Honeyz’ was born on 11 June 2011. The blog boosted my confidence again, helped me wean myself off the ‘break-up devastation’ completely and empowered me in setting new goals. It has also helped me stay connected with my friends and reconnect with old friends who find my blog through Google. Now ‘Honeyz’ has become the blood that runs through my veins and I can’t live without it! 3. How do you feel about the other Finalists in your category this year? How do you think you will fare compared to them? Needless to say, the other finalists are very experienced and already have a network of loyal followers. Some of them are last year’s SBA Beauty finalists! Tough competition I tell you. Here’s a little secret. I’m also a loyal reader of some of their blogs so when I met them at a briefing and gathering held by the Mary Chia team last week, I got slightly starstruck! The girls are all very friendly and humble despite their achievements. Some of them have even added me on Facebook! Compared to their blogs, my blog has been around for the shortest time but I don’t think that will put me at a disadvantage. In fact, I think it is difficult to compare us because even though we share a common interest – beauty, we are all of different demographics. Therefore, our blogs deliver a vast variety of beauty experiences that cater to different niches. 4. Give a reason why readers should visit your blog and vote for you? Here’s what I think about the new formula… Guess what. The first sunscreen I ever bought was Sunplay’s Super Block sunscreen. That was probably more than a decade ago. Since then, I’ve always brought my trusty Sunplay sunscreen for frolicking at the beach. You may be wondering why I’ve been such a loyal fan. Well, it is because it is the first sun block lotion I’ve ever know that does not have a viscous texture. When I was a young girl, I never understood why mommy always applied this white, thick and greasy substance (sunblock lotion) on me whenever we go swimming or head out to the beach. Sometimes, I think it even ruins my mood for good fun as I will become sweaty and sticky very quickly. Of course, I blame it all on that white substance. Mom is a beauty junkie and she’ll always explain the importance of layering on that sunblock before we go baking in the sun. I understood her good intentions but still hated the sunblock. So as I got older and started to earn my own keep, I began to search for beauty products that suit me and my skin. And the first product I bought? Sunplay! Its texture is extremely light and it is absorbed very quickly into the skin after application. It is the same with the new and improved Sunplay with SOLAREX-3. Nothing has changed except its enhanced sun protection features. That chemical smell is still there but it disappears shortly after application. However, I realized I tend to apply too much sunscreen because if its ultra light texture. And when I do, it produces this white cast over my skin. So how much sunscreen should you apply? As stated in this post – In theory, you should use approximately two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. In practice, this means applying two tablespoons of sunscreen to the exposed areas of the face and body – a 50-cent sized dollop to the face alone. The sunscreen causes minor break outs on my acne prone skin so I only use it on my body. The SPF PA+++ 130 is ideal for long hours in the sun. I get sunburns rather easily and once, it got so bad that I could peel my skin off like a rattlesnake. So thumbs up to its high SPF! Though I still highly recommend you to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming. Overall, a great sunblock packed into a small bottle. 4 Honeyz crowns! An afternoon with celebrity stylist Judy Lin! A month ago, I was invited by Beauty Bistro to guest model in their Beauty DIY event for the”Love That Body” Bodycare segment. I was told that Judy Lin 林叶亭, a veteran fashion beauty and celebrity stylist from Taiwan, will be demonstrating the brightening properties of the SHILLS Bubble Body Scrub on me. *Incredibly honored* In case you don’t know of Judy Lin, she’s a beauty and styling consultant who is a regular guest on Taiwan’s number one beauty program Nu Ren Wo Zui Da (女人我最大). She has worked with countless Taiwanese celebrities and created many great looks for them. She is also an author with many top-selling beauty books to her name! Here she is! Psst! She’s 45 years old this year and a mother of two lovely boys. And she still looks fab!
