Come on, you’re meeting amazing people, pampering yourself and trying new looks! Does that sound like hard work to you? Beauty shouldn’t feel like hard work. Instead, it should be fun and make you feel alive. Henceforth, I will call these get-togethers playshops. We play with new toys and learn more about what we love! What more can we ask for? Booya!  Two weeks ago, Panasonic hosted an informative Beauty Playshop featuring their latest skincare gizmos as well as beauty tips from Celebrity Lifestyle Guru and Natural Therapist, Bryan Gan . Besides dispensing valuable Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) beauty pointers, Bryan also suggested many useful and out-of-the-box ways to create our very own home retreat. If you’re in need of a quick sensory getaway and true beauty fix all from the comfort of your own home, then you certainly have to read on! Your gateway to relaxing home treatments begins here. Meet our therapist of the day – Bryan Gan A little background about our host this morning: Bryan Lao Shi (老师 meaning teacher) started as a health and wellness blogger in 2001. He soon began to gain recognition for his tried and true holistic, natural treatment methods. On top of this, he’s also an aromatherapy enthusiast. Over the years, he has curated and shared many therapeutic home treatments that combine acupressure massaging with essential oils to help his readers relax, rejuvenate and even recharge. His passion and commitment really shone through and today, he’s a popular host on hit Taiwanese lifestyle variety show, Lady First (女人我最大) and a renowned beauty consultant for top celebrities. I’ve got you beauty lovers intrigued eh? Don’t fret if you missed the Panasonic gig because I’m here to recap the event and its helpful tips. 🙂 4-7-8 Breathing Technique Bryan Lao Shi commenced the playshop with the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique to help us relax, calm and de-stress before we began the day’s activities. It’s all about the senses, remember? Though it’s called the 4-7-8 technique, it’s actually as easy as 1-2-3! :p 1) Breathe in deeply through your nose for 4 seconds 2) Hold your breath for 7 seconds 3) Exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds Yup, in case you’re wondering, it is the same 4-7-8 breathing exercise that everyone has been sharing on Facebook. It is highly recommended by Dr Weil, scientists and people who’ve tried it. The technique helps to regulate your breathing, blood oxygen levels, reduce your heart rate and release special hormones which all lead to a calmer and more relaxed state as well as a fantastic night’s sleep. Even I’ve been using this method to clear my mind before I hit the sack every night. It works like a charm, I tell you. I’m a huge fan of meditation. When all else fails, close your eyes, empty your mind, aim for enlightenment. A zen-like calm will do wonders for your soul, ease the tension in those worry lines, ease away that frown, allow you to wake refreshed and ready to face whatever life throws at you. This is exactly why I’ve added the 4-7-8 technique to my meditation repertoire. Living It Up With TCM Bryan Lao Shi is also a strong believer of TCM and the use of medicinal herbs. I know some of you may dismiss such healing methods as ‘pure placebo’ but Bryan emphasised that he would only recommend products that he has personally tried and proven to be effective. Well, you can totally see that conviction in his eyes. Haha! His first endorsement at the session was that we make our own fresh Corn Silk Tea. He proposed drinking the tea a few times a week to flush out excess waste and reduce bloating. Do you know that inflammation is closely linked to cancer, heart disease and a multitude of other diseases? Well, then you’ll be happy to know that corn silk is anti-inflammatory. 🙂 It also helps to protect and soothe the urinary tract and kidneys, and lower blood sugar levels. To top it off, corn silk contains proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. It’s a perfect blend of goodness! Thank you Bryan Lao Shi for introducing this super ingredient to us! Now let’s make some tea! Simply shuck the corn, save the corn silk and brew it with boiling water. And here’s my Corn Silk Tea this morning. Yummeh! Other foods that received Bryan Lao Shi’s stamp of approval were White Fungus, Dried Longans and Chrysanthemum. White Fungus Bryan believes that white fungus can help to bring radiance back to the face and promote healthier lungs. Dried Longans He suggested boiling dark dried longans with red dates to create the ultimate remedy for insomnia and stomachaches. Dried Longans are rich in iron and fibre too so they make very healthy desserts! Chrysanthemum Finally, with Chrysanthemum, it gets a little tricky. Different types of Chrysanthemum serve different purposes and even the number of  Chrysanthemum flowers play a part. In summary, drink White Chrysanthemum (Baijuhua) to reduce eye dryness, Yellow Chrysanthemum (Huangjuhua) to treat headaches, Baby Bud Chrysanthemum to boost immunity and relieve stress and finally, Wild Chrysanthemum (yejuhua) to reduce heat, swelling and pain. Bryan Lao Shi recommends six flowers in every cup for best results. No more, no less! Beauty Meets Technology It’s a Panasonic Beauty Playshop so this means we also got to enjoy product demos by Bryan and witness first hand the effectiveness of the Panasonic gadgets. Create Your Own Sanctuary At Home Bryan Lao Shi came up with a pretty innovative way of using the Panasonic Facial Steamer to turn your home into an aromatherapy retreat. Okay, here’s the thing. Panasonic actually discourages mixing the water in the steamer with any other substance as it may cause burns, malfunctions and even shorten the life span of the machine. But! We really wanna enjoy those soothing essential oils like we’re in a real spa. So to counter that, Bryan developed a simple and effective method which I’m going to share with you in bit. First, here are the items you need: A cotton pad, scotch tape and of course, your favorite aromatherapy oil. All you need to do is to add a few drops of essential oil on the cotton pad, then attach it to the funnel head of the device. Turn on the switch and you’ll feel like you’re enjoying your steaming session in your own spa haven. Speaking of facial steaming, I know many of you may be wondering if steaming really helps to open the pores and dislodge the unwanted impurities. Or even worse, does it act like a total dehydrating agent and strip our skin completely of moisture? This brings us to the next segment of the post: Here Comes The Science Steaming and detoxing… Are they too good to be true? I’ve always been very conscious about my gaping skin pores so ever since I heard that hot water opens pores and cold water shrinks them, I hated myself for indulging in all those hot steam baths and began to attempt to ‘reverse the effect’ by gliding ice cubes around my face every morning. Haha! That was ten years ago. Now I know I can’t pit against the will of mother nature. And you should too. I’ve spoken to Dr Chia Hui Ling, Plastic Surgeon at KK Hospital and Dr Suzanne Cheng, Dermatologist at the National Skin Centre to clarify all these beauty myths about pores and detoxing. “Pores do not open and close. Anecdotally, steaming helps to soften the pore and hence, it becomes easier to extract the clogged debris. There is no evidence that we expel any toxins through skin, just sodium from perspiration. That said, steaming is not entirely pointless. The heat from the steam will help with vasodilation and improve circulation to the face.  The causes of enlarged obvious pores may be different for the young and old. Younger skin tends to have heaps of clogged pores from excess sebum secretion, while older skin may suffer from skin laxity resulting in pores opening up too. To tighten pores visibly, you’ll need lasers to improve collagen remodeling.” Chia Hui Ling Plastic Surgeon KK Women & Children’s Hospital MBBS (London) MRCS (UK) MMED (Singapore) “Pores or hair follicles probably do react slightly in response to heat.  And the condensate from steam would soften the epidermis temporarily, much like soaking feet before paring callouses. It’s a misconception to think that applying a mask or washing your face with cold water will “tighten” open pores.  To do that, you’ll need procedures such as Fractional Co2 Laser and Radio Frequency to promote new collagen formation. Finally, the skin does not eliminate toxins, that’s the job of the liver and kidneys.” Suzanne Cheng MBBS (London) MRCP (UK) Consultant Dermatologist National Skin Centre I hope that cleared the air. No facial steaming treatments or topical products are going to help you ‘detox’. The only way you can do it is through a healthy liver and kidneys. Remember to drink up, take a lot of fruits and vegetables and of course, rest well to keep your organs healthy. For added support to your detoxification programme, I highly recommend taking Milk Thistle supplements (especially if you’re partial to a lychee martini once in a while) as this supports the function of your liver which is responsible for producing Glutathione, the most powerful antioxidant in our bodies. A healthy liver means more Glutathione which in turn means you’re at your best in terms of fighting free radicals and other toxins. *If you’re not certain whether Milk Thistle is suitable for you, please consult your doctor.* So Is Steaming Still Good For Us? The answer is a resounding yes. Steaming only becomes dehydrating and damaging when you are exposed to it for too long. But if managed wisely, it can also give you intense hydration and replenish lost moisture. Skin also becomes more absorbent during steaming so this is the most opportune time to apply your skin care products. So how long is too long? Five minutes. Anything more and it’ll be a negative relationship where your skin loses moisture faster than it can absorb moisture. In conclusion, too much steaming is bad for your skin but used in moderation with your favorite beauty products, you’ll get the most effective moisturising treatment. A Different Kind Of Beauty Advice I know that nowadays you can find any information on Google. As such, many of us have become Google Scientists, proving our beauty theories with articles found on the internet. However, there are many articles and studies around, even those published on so called reputable platforms such as Pubmed and the Lancet, which may be inconclusive and erroneous. There are studies which are too small to be statistically significant, are flawed in terms of study methodology, and sometimes you even have to look at who’s funding the research to decide whether to take the results with a pinch of salt or not. This is why doctors and scientists in fact have to undergo training in order to be able to effectively ‘critically appraise’ research to know what can be trusted and what can’t. It’s fashionable these days to try and use science to decide whether a beauty product may really work or whether you might be just experiencing the placebo effect. Just remember to be prudent with the information you can find, in case the so-called facts lead you away from a beauty wonder to a beauty blunder. “Happy is the bride that the sun shines on.” Even though I got married during Singapore’s stormiest season, I was lucky it was mostly sunny on my wedding day last November. Wait what? Last November??! Can you believe it? Seven wonderful months have passed in the twinkling of an eye and we have already been married for more than half a year! Woo hoo! This definitely calls for a celebration. *pops champagne* So this weekend, we decided to pull back from our daily grind to indulge in a nice fancy dinner and toast to those beautiful memories as well as to making some new ones. What does this also imply for a (vain) girl like me? *sheepish grin* That I will need to look perfect for my date! 😛 Renowned author, Stephen R. Covey, once said we have to ‘Begin with the end in mind’ so today, I enhanced my beauty routine by starting the day right with a rejuvenating workout and wholesome skincare regime. Haha! Ever wondered what the morning routine of a beauty blogger is like?I had an absolutely indulging start to the day. Bet you’re also wondering what are all those gizmos that I’m using. Well, there is actually a lot more to these beauty buddies than you might think. Let me elaborate further in this rundown of the items. 🙂 Panasonic Facial Ionic Steamer Ever since my teen years, I’ve been plagued by zits and congested pores. The ramification of that is nasty as I started developing incorrigible habits like overexfoliating and picking my skin. Yup. I was one of those compulsive skin pickers too. 🙁 That inevitably resulted in unsightly acne scars and even MORE pimples. My confidence plunged to an all-time low. Soon my mom decided it was time that I was introduced to the world of facials and steaming. I was addicted, I tell you! Especially to the smoothness of my skin immediately after steaming and painful extractions (the tears were worth it). Since facials are really expensive, we could only afford one session every couple of months. Not surprisingly, I got really impatient in between those no-facial months and started to develop my very own home steaming treatments with a pail of boiling water and my substandard zit removal skills. Those were NOT the days! :p Fast forward to 2015, Panasonic has come up with a perfect and affordable solution to extract the dirt and blackheads in the least destructive way. I know my 2001 adolescent self would be deeply grateful. Meet the star of the day – the Panasonic Facial Ionic Steamer. I know there are already plenty of facial steamers out there but what really sets the Panasonic steamer apart is its ability to produce ultra-fine, nano-sized steam particles. We’re talking about a whopping 4,000 times finer than regular particles here! These smaller steam particles penetrate our tiny pores more easily and eventually, supplement our skin with more moisture. I also like how the steam gently floats up to your face from below, especially since I’ve previously been scalded by falling drops of hot water from those professional salon overhead facial steamers. Traumatising experience!  Since then, I’ve always been wary of the quality as well as the position of facial steamers. Needless to say, I felt comfortable and safe when using the Panasonic steamer this morning. Keep your face at least 20cm away from the nozzle. Another plus point of the smaller steam particles? It now takes a fraction of the time to soften and loosen the underlying debris. Yay! After steaming my face for about three minutes, I was ready to get rid of the bane of my existence – the scores of tiny blackheads in my pores. Ugh! Since the excess sebum and gunk are now easier to remove, I no longer use an extractor tool for this procedure. Instead, I use a gentle scrub to exfoliate my skin after steaming. Here’s my choice. 🙂 Crème Simon Gentle Double  Exfoliation Facial Scrub Finding a good scrub is as tough as climbing Mount Everest these days. Most of them are too harsh and cause skin aggravation with the jagged edges on their tiny beads. When it comes to buffing the skin, it is important to select a product that’s gentle and imbued with nourishment from great ingredients. This is why the Creme Simon scrub is a winner as it deviates from the usual harsh contents of scrubs and uses emollients such as Jojoba esters and glycerin. As mentioned earlier, after steaming my face for a good three minutes, I began exfoliating with the scrub, this time keeping the nozzle of the steamer slightly further away at 30cm. The heat and constant massaging allowed the debris to dislodge more easily. And now all I have to do is wash my face with water, and voilà, soft supple skin! Sidetrack: You know what you’re doing is visually enticing when you catch your videographer secretly using the products while you go change outfits. Caught in the act! This is Yong Thye, my best friend and also the talented lad who filmed the scenes in my ‘Wake Up With Me’ video. This pictorial outtake is for real. I caught this big guy fiddling around with my steam machine and beauty products when I came out of my room. He said he could tell that I was really having fun with the products and wanted to try them for himself. His verdict – “I’m going to buy one of these for my mom and myself.” Psst! Guess who else has been secretly using my Panasonic Facial Steamer? 😛 Petite Amie, of course! Pictured above is our favorite bunny enjoying her mini spa treatment with the Panasonic Facial Steamer. Next up! Panasonic Facial Cool Putter After an intensive cleansing routine, let’s take our pampering morning routine further with a cooling face massage. As its name suggests, this Panasonic Cool Putter promises to help cool down the skin instantly with its 10°C cooling plate. You know, many celebrities and fitness experts have suggested inversion therapy to defy gravity and prevent our face from sagging. Since I don’t have an inversion table, I practise simple yoga poses like this below to reap all the beauty benefits of going upside down. However, inversion may not be safe or bearable for everyone so this is when the cool putter comes in handy. Massage your face with the Cool Putter in an upward motion for a couple of minutes daily to relieve tension in your facial muscles and prevent skin from sagging. The constant massaging will help you relax better and eventually, you’ll look more radiant and youthful! Exactly what I need this morning before my big date. I also need to diminish the appearance of my puffy eyes. Here’s my remedy – rub the cool plates gently against the eye bags to soothe and brighten your eyes instantly. Here’s a visual representation of my suggested application directions. And this is how you can enjoy the goodness of inverting without challenging gravity! It’s a pretty neat perk eh? Panasonic Warming Facial & Body Roller Squeezing Roller I don’t have the most flattering face shape so I’ve always used rollers to contour my jaw since I discovered them at Daiso many years ago. Panasonic totally brought it up a notch by introducing rollers with temperature settings and interchangeable heads to suit different purposes. I love the concept of a heater as the warmness increases blood circulation which in turn would help me de-stress and relax while I massage my face. In the long term, you know what that means – you get irresistible glowing skin! Whee! The product is also great for contouring the body. Since my dress for tonight reveals more legs, I also used it on my calves to make them look firmer and shapelier. Stroking Roller The stroking roller is effective on different parts of the face such as the mouth, cheeks, chin, forehead and even various parts of your body such as the stomach, collarbone and legs. I never liked massaging my face with my fingers as I tend to scratch my face with my long nails so this device is ideal for days where I’m in need of a relaxing face massage without the minor injuries. The best thing about a face massage is the warmth of the fingers and it’s nice that the roller replicates this with its built-in heating feature. And there you have it, my beauty routine for a superb start to the day. I hope the tips and products mentioned here float your boat too. The key word here is ‘colourless’ which means I could never gauge how pink the lip gel would go so I tended to apply too much. The consequence? Bright neon pink lips that look inappropriately skanky. As for the Skinaz lip tattoo, I like that we have a range of colors to choose from and that we can see the intensity of the hue as we apply the product. Here’s a quick demo: My lips in the mornings are always pale so it makes a perfect canvas to try the product at this time. There would be a lot of tugging involved later so I spread some lip balm over my lips before applying the Skinaz lip tattoo. Ooh… I love the sultry red hue. 20 minutes later… The lip tattoo is now completely dry. However, I made the mistake of not applying it evenly on my lower lips so I had trouble peeling it off. I decided to rectify it by washing the product away with water. Bad move. The result was this unsightly pink streak on my lower lip as seen below. My lesson? Apply a thicker and more even layer next time. Nonetheless, I still love how natural it looked on my lips. The last quarter of 2014 has been interesting for me. Overnight, I went from a beauty lazy bum to a wannabe fitspo and even embarked on a full ketogenic diet to prepare for my impending wedding. Haha! This is further proof that brides will do anything to look phenomenal on their big day. 😛 Well, here’s the problem – I thought I was also becoming a skincare nutcase when I began to pinpoint every single flaw on my body, even the ones I can’t see – like on my back. These conjured thoughts were further aggravated by the bare back gowns I’d chosen for the wedding. This time I knew that no flaw could be spared and I was determined to bring every one of them to the ground! Lucky me, help arrived in the form of an email from D’Skin , introducing their latest body treatments, including body facials. I was curious and very eager to find out more so I set up my first appointment without any hesitation. At that time, getting wedding dress ready had almost become my life goal and with some help I think I managed to pull it off. Haha! Fast forward to 2015, I’m still a huge advocate of D’Skin’s body care treatments. My skin isn’t exactly perfect but the zits and unsightly marks have certainly reduced within the last few months. And here we go! First, let’s take a look at the current condition of my back. The key problems identified are clogged pores, pimples, acne scars and uneven skin tone. Boo! Do you know that the skin on our body is thicker and the pores are also larger hence making it easier to clog pores and cause breakouts? To add fuel to the fire, these areas are constantly in contact with our clothes which may irritate the skin and ultimately exacerbate our body acne problems. So the foremost step to ‘Operation Flawless Back’ is to exfoliate the multiple layers of dead skin cells that have accumulated over the years. Abby executed this step with a Diamond Peel Treatment where a state-of-the-art diamond cut applicator with a sandpaper-like surface was used to rub against my skin to lift and subsequently, vacuum away the dead skin cells. Pain factor – zero. 🙂 Au revoir, dead skin! The debris captured is ultimately trapped in this cotton filter that was placed in the diamond head. Honestly, this whole process seems like a possible scenario for cross-contamination to occur. This brings us to a fundamental concern: What happens after the machine is used on a customer? Well, you’ll be happy to know that the salon takes pride in their hygiene measures and makes sure that all tools are sanitised before they’re used on a new customer. In this case, they would replace the cotton filter, sanitise the applicator head and throughly rinse the tube to get rid of all the gunk from the previous customer. Phew! So all D’Skin’s customers can enjoy the treatments with a peace of mind. 🙂 Okay, so how’s my back doing? After the exfoliation process, my skin looked red and inflammed but it felt very smooth to the touch. Abby applied this paste to sooth the redness, then place a layer of gauze on my back before she applied a thick layer of mask on it. The mask is infused with collagen and moisturisers to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. Psst! It also smells like seaweed so it always stimulates a craving for seafood in me. Haha! After 20 minutes, Abby removed the gauze, cleaned my back and concluded the treatment with a thin film of BioCell Nano Cream to moisturize the treated skin. I like that D’Skin came up with their own line of products for their treatments as this means that the efficacy of the ingredients used would be in line with the objectives of their treatments. To top it off, this also ensures that the aftercare products we use complements the treatment ones. And now we can continue to benefit from the goodness of the treatments even at home! Immediately after the treatment… The acne scars are noticeably lighter and the redness subsided too! And there you have it – the legendary Back Facial. 🙂 As mentioned earlier, no part of my body was spared so the next target area of the treatment was my chest. I went through massive weight loss when I was a toddler and it left these unsightly marks on my skin. The marks are never going to go away but Abby suggested performing the same treatment to prevent the lines from deepening. I also emphasised earlier that clogged hair follicles can cause blemishes on your skin so to eradicate the problem, Abby also coupled the treatment with an IPL session. I’ve done scores of IPL treatments before but this one seems rather unique. In regular IPL treatments, the hand piece is placed onto the skin while a short pulse of light is released. This probably takes about one second before it is moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the targeted area is treated. D’Skin’s IPL treatments employs an entirely different method, in that the hand piece is moved back and forth across the skin, emitting light as it moves. According to the salon, this is the latest IPL technology known as the Super Hair Removal (SHR) and it works by gradually heating the dermis to a temperature that effectively damages the hair follicle and prevents re-growth, while not injuring the surrounding tissue. It combines high average power, low-fluence, and a high repetition rate; gradually increasing the temperature of the hair follicle by stacking the pulses as the hand piece is continuously moved over the treatment area. It promises to efficiently target hair follicles and disable growth of active hair. I’ve been undergoing the SHR treatment for a few months now and I have to say, it is one of the most effective hair removal treatments I’ve tried. After just one treatment, hair regrowth became significantly slower. Soft, light and fine hair only grew after a few months and since they are so thin, they are almost invisible. The treatment process feels almost like regular IPL – you’ll feel a warm prickling sensation when the hand piece moves over the skin and I thought it was pretty bearable. After the treatment, the skin would look slightly pinkish but it would fade after an hour or so. If you’re look for a long-term hair removal solution, this may be it. It is suitable for most body areas. “Love your skin, give oil a go.” – Shu Uemura This sounds particularly counterintuitive when 80% of my skin is oily. However, beauty giant Shu Uemura, well known for its highly revered oil cleansers, is determined to reshape my beauty beliefs by extending their cleansing oil line further with the new Blanc:Chroma Brightening and Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil. I was invited to a skincare workshop hosted by Shu Uemura and Clozette a few months ago where Shu Uemura demonstrated how oil can dislodge trapped debris in the pores without harshly depleting all moisture like regular soap does. The phrase “Love your skin, give oil a go.” was clearly etched in their workshop objectives. Hmm, we see what you’re trying to do, Shu Uemura and we’re onto you and all your cleansing secrets! Haha! Honestly, I’ve almost forgotten about my ‘cleansing oil’ roots until the introduction of the new Blanc:Chroma cleansing oil. Micellar Cleansing Water products have been dominating the beauty charts in the past couple of years for its gentle formula so consequently, I also jumped on the bandwagon and switched to water-based products for my makeup removal routine. This year, Shu Uemura is all out to reclaim its ‘Top Cleanser Title’ by packing all the indulgence in a bottle. Moving beyond stubborn makeup removal, Blanc:Chroma Brightening and Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil is the first volcanic clay cleansing oil that works to gently exfoliate and polish away accumulated melano-stains for brighter, transparent and smoother skin. Melano-stains are dead cells containing melanin on the skin surface that cause uneven and dull skin tone. Its combination of purifying clay extract and polishing Lipo HA lightens the skin tone by thoroughly removing accumulated melano-stains. How to use: Step 1: Use 3-4 pumps of cleansing oil on dry hands. Step 2: Spread gently and thoroughly over dry face. Step 3: Add a few drops of lukewarm water to face to emulsify. (Oil will turn milky white.) Step 4: Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. My verdict: My vacation cleansing squad usually includes cleansing water, cleansing wipes, facial cleanser and exfoliating cleansers. However, for the recent surprise birthday staycay organised by Bobby, I decided to simplify my tedious cleansing routine since I had to pack in such short notice. I brought only my Shu Uemura Blanc:Chroma Brightening & Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil. Yup. I’m keeping it sane this time. 😛 And it seems like even this little guy agrees too! Check out that smile! Having fun at Equarius Hotel. Upon application, the cleansing oil felt just like any other oil-based product – greasy and uncomfortable. I began to wonder what makes Shu Uemura cleansing oils superior to other similar products, in that one bottle is sold every 7 seconds worldwide? After massaging it for a good 10 seconds, I began to understand why. I could actually feel the gunk on my face being lifted off with every rub. Yes. I could literally feel fine granules forming on my face. A closer look and I realised they are actually blackheads that were drawn out of the congested pores. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better than this, another beauty miracle happened – after throughly rinsing my face with water, all the cleansing oil was gone, leaving no trace of grease. This is amazing as most oil-based cleansers would always leave behind a thin film of grease which warrants a second cleansing step. I hate that as this always dries out the skin so this one-step cleanser really gives other cleansing oils and makeup removers a run for their money. Okay okay. I know what you’re dying to find out – its makeup-removing efficacy eh? Here’s a quick demo of its abilities: I applied CC cream, waterproof eyeliner and lipstick on the back of my hand. And I squirted some Blanc:Chroma cleansing oil on my hand and gently rubbed it a few times. Then I rinsed it with water and wiped off the water with tissue paper. Do note that I did not rub or tug my skin at all but only applied gentle circular massages during the process. This was the result. Even though there was still some eyeliner residue left, I was happy with what I saw. Most cleansers would require vigorous rubbing to achieve this result. I also used it to remove my tacky hair styling creams and it does the job pretty effectively too. So is the Shu Uemura Blanc:Chroma Brightening & Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil perfect? I would say almost.Yes, it did remove my makeup efficiently but it also stung my eyes during the process. Ouch! It happened a few times when I tried to open my eyes to check if the mascara is completely removed. Nonetheless, there is still one good thing that came out of the ordeal – I didn’t lose any eyelash. Well, it always happens when I try to remove makeup from my eyes but this time, my lashes stayed intact while I remove all vestiges of my stubborn mascara with the cleansing oil. 2015 has been a doozy of a year for Honeyz Cube . We welcomed our new Beauty Poet (aka Blog Editor), Alice, into the HC family, acquired a new office (Woo hoo! More about that later.) and even brought Health Couture to life with a fitness and wellness workshop earlier this year! I wanted to start the new year on a healthy note so I teamed up with my husband, Bobby, the professional trainers at Zesty Kickz and cold-brewed tea connoisseur, Infuusa and organised our very first Health Couture event for our supporters at Honeyz Cube. The event was held on the first day of February and since we were only a couple of weeks away from Valentine’s Day and the Lunar New Year, we thought we could come up with a wholesome slimming programme, aptly named ‘How to lose weight in two weeks?‘. We had an awesome time jiggling our fats to non-existence during Zesty Kickz’s Zumba segment and uncovering all the diet myths at the health talk by Dr Bobby Stryker. We also got to enjoy tasty calorie-free beverages, courtesy of Infuusa! It was one hell of a party and I was extremely happy when our participants asked for another session. Whoopee! Bobby opened the health talk with this question “What do you think a good diet is?” It was interesting hearing everyone’s point of view about healthy meal choices as well as some very interesting old wives’ tales about losing weight. Of course, Bobby also shared his views and dispensed valuable nutritional advice to all our participants. Even my little bro was listening attentively to his big brother’s presentation on healthy eating. Many participants were intrigued by the new diet advice Bobby shared and came forward to clarify their doubts about the topic. Many also congratulated us for a successful event and even suggested another Health Couture workshop! Yay! We couldn’t be happier for the positive response. Group hug! Sponsored Review The low humidity and dry environment in airline cabins always take a toll on my skin, sapping every inkling of moisture out of me. So to prevent myself from emerging from the plane looking like a dried prune, I always make sure I bring all the skincare items I need to replenish the moisture in my skin, lips and even hair. Okay, here’s the problem – I also like to travel light (well, who doesn’t?) and lugging a thousand beauty products on the plane just doesn’t cut it. So when I discovered this new beauty power duo that can practically replace all the beauty products I need, I was like…  “Shut up and take my money!” Haha! Yup. So on my recent trip to the Maldives, I changed things up by leaving all my skincare in my suitcase and bringing only my Glam-it! products. Feel Me Hand Cream This rich hand cream contains a high concentration of shea butter, collagen and an infusion of almond oil, apricot oil and licorice extracts. The fast absorbing, anti-aging formula will moisturise dry hands leaving them smooth and lightly-scented. – Suitable for all skin types – Paraben and sulfate free How to use: Apply after washing hands or as often as need throughout the day Price: SGD13 Afterthoughts… The product disappears into my skin shortly after application but amazingly, my hand remains soft and moisturised. I don’t know how the product did it. Most of the time, hand creams simply vanish, leaving my skin dry and wrinkly again so I have to re-apply the products. The few instances I don’t have to do that is when I’m using a cream that is as thick as pea soup. And that’s not great too as it usually feels very tacky on the skin making it impossible to touch anything without leaving nasty grease stains. This cream has a nice understated scent and does not leave my skin feeling icky and slick. My only gripe is the absence of UV filters in the cream. I was travelling in daylight hours to the Maldives and like many others, I’ve long heard about the spectacular aerial view of the Maldives’ coral atolls so naturally, I was glued to my plane window for a full 15 minutes before landing. Well, I got my astonishing aerial view but I guess I also exposed myself to serious sun damage. We all know that the Maldives is located right on the equator so the amount of UV exposure is higher. And to rub salt into the wound, the UV rays are also more intense at higher altitudes. Talk about a double whammy! So if you’re like me – love peeking out of the window during landing, remember to apply products with sunblock properties to protect your skin. Nonetheless, I’m still a huge fan of the long lasting effects of the Feel Me Hand Cream and its budget friendly price. 3.5 Honeyz crowns! Petite Amie likes it too! 😀 Glam-it! Universal BB Balm Universal BB Balm is delicately fragranced in a tempting chocolate scent and a lifesaver for your chapped lips, hands, and all dry areas. The BB Balm: – soothes baby rashes – massages (including baby massages) – reduces and prevents stretch marks – softens and removes cuticles – softens dry areas and patches (elbows, feet and ankles) – moisturizes chapped lips – prevent split ends and reduce flyaways How to use: Keep lips, cuticles and dry heels, soft, supple and naturally protected. Ingredients: It contains shea butter, argan oil and rosehip seed oil. Price: SGD21 Afterthoughts… Travelling and multi-purpose beauty products should be the best of friends. Haha! And since the Glam-it! BB Balm can be used on your body, hair and even lips, you bet your bottom dollar that this was the first product I put into my bag. At first glance, I thought the texture might feel like tiger balm or vaseline – soft and balmy but I was wrong. The texture is the hard balmy type and after a few swipes, a thin greasy film appears on top. And that’s all you got. The thick consistency does not allow generous applications of the product. This is not exactly a bad thing because I can now control frizz without leaving my hair too greasy or uncomfortable to the touch. On top of that, we mostly likely ingest the products that we apply on our lips so the fact that the BB balm is organic makes it a perfect lip care balm too. My only suggestion – why not add a partition in the pot? You see, I don’t want to apply the product to my feet or hair, then use it on my lips later. To carry two pots of the product also defeats the purpose of ‘travelling light’. With a partition in the pot, I can assign one side to my body, and another side to my lips. This could even be a special travel edition of the balm! 😀 For now, I like how the BB Balm deeply restores the moisture that was wicked away by the dry air in the cabin without being overly oily. 3 Honeyz crowns!
