Well, since I wasn’t born to the purple, I decided to wear the gorgeous amethyst hue on my hair instead. It’s a perfect plan eh? As usual, before I experiment with a new colour, Kenji, Director of Hair Profile Salon highly recommends a hair treatment to prep the hair for any oncoming dryness. This time I’m getting a hair and scalp treatment from top Italian hair care brand, Napura . My scalp has been rather irritated by the new hair products that I’ve been using. It is red and slightly flaky. I guess it is probably still trying to get accustomed to the new chemicals introduced to it. Kenji recommended Napura’s T15.6 Active Pre that soothes and reduces redness of the skin, controls the bacterial flora of the scalp and removes dandruff. The balanced mix of the Active Vegetal Principles and precious essential oils in its formulation facilitates the elimination of dandruff by opposing aggressive bacterial activity and keeping the scalp hydrated. Joanne of Hair Profile, distributed the product directly onto the scalp by using soothing and gentle massage strokes that were absolutely invigorating. The delicate herb scent was a huge plus! I felt like I was reaching beauty nirvana during the treatment. Haha! The road to healthy hair is never complete without a full hair treatment too. Kenji introduced me to Napura’s M19 Rikeir which is an innovative concentration of proteins, specifically formulated to reconstruct the damaged areas of the keratinical structure. A full treatment will result in stronger and shinier hair which is easier to brush and more resistant to future damages. This process was like using a hair treatment mask. Basically, Eileen of Hair Profile sprayed the product on my dry locks and let it sit for a few minutes for maximum absorption before she rinsed the product thoroughly. After an hour and a half of massaging, deep conditioning and cleansing… … my hair was restored to an excellent condition. Check out the front view. The hair looked and felt soft and bouncy and the highlights also appeared more vibrant than before. Check out the shine! A month later… The good condition maintained. My hair was still shiny and smooth from the intensive Napura hair treatment a month ago. According to Kenji, the Napura products were formulated by highly acclaimed and experienced trichologists, hence the effective long-lasting results. My mane was now fully-prepped and ready for my hair colour transformation. Check out the choices that were presented to me! After much deliberation, I chose Blueberry Hill which was kinda like mardi gras purple. The final product! The color was rather dark immediately after the dye job. It only got lighter and brighter after a week or so. This was the result. What I love about Hair Profile’s dye jobs is their longevity. Hair colors usually last more than a month before they fade to an ombre style. Here are a couple of photos of my hair taken in a studio about two months after the dye job. The hair color has faded slightly to create a gradient effect which still looks pretty good. I always believe that good things are better shared. A few months ago, I was a pretty boring person when it came to eye makeup, sticking only to bronze and neutral shades. You can say that I was ‘stuck in a makeup rut‘. Well, not anymore! A quick tutorial at L’Oreal’s Beauty Destination makeup workshop last month enlightened me and now I’m all ready to break new ground in the realm of Juliana’s Makeup! Haha! First look: A Taste of Tropics First look: A Taste of Tropics This look was totally inspired by my vacation mood. 😀 I’m heading to sunny Bali next month and I wanted to create a look that represents my high spirits and my destination’s tropical attributes. So I lined my upper eyelids with No. 1 to signify the blue ocean, then brought in the beautiful sunset with No. 2 on the outer corners of my eyes. We can’t forget the palm trees and cocktails! I swept the palm trees (No. 3) on the center of my lids then the cocktails (No. 1) on the inner corners of my eyes as well as the socket lines. Finally I smudged them out with a clean brush. Second look: Wings of the Phoenix Second look: Wings of the Phoenix The fiery red hue reminded me of the mythical Phoenix rising from the ashes so I thought I could create a look inspired by it. I dusted some No. 2 on the center of my lids and outer corners then swiped No. 4 on the inner corners and the crease of the eyes. Then I used a fine liner brush to apply No. 1 to the outer edges of my lower lashline and No. 3 to the inner edges. And there you have it – a vivacious Phoenix-inspired look! Final look: Joy to the World! Final look: Joy to the World! Joy to the World is one of the most significant Christmas carols ever so you guessed it, this look was inspired by our most favorite holiday of the year – Christmas! Red and green are synonymous with Christmas so I layered the center and outer corners of my eyes heavily with No. 2 and 3 to make them look like Christmas festoons. Then added some snow by blending No. 4 on the inner corners of the eyes towards the brow bone. Finally, I applied no. 1 on my lower lashline beginning the line at the inner corners of the eye and extending it to the outer edges to signify Christmas’ winter night sky. And it’s written not just by me, we also have two new lovely ladies on board, both of whom have a discerning eye for beauty and perennial fashion looks. I’ve had friends and readers ask me what the difference is between my blog and the official Honeyz Cube blog. So I’m going to answer all those burning questions of yours right now! Click for more! Well, the key distinction between the two blogs is – one is written solely by me and the other by three very awesome ladies with a ginormous passion for great skincare, cool makeup and supernova fashion. Everytime I shut my eyes during my eyelash extension treatments, all I hear is apparatus clinking and all I feel is my eyelashes being separated by some kind of applicator. The rhythmic noises, gentle motions and comfortable bed usually make me sleepy and I’ll doze off during the treatment. It’s the cool breeze and water at the end of the treatment that usually wakes me from my slumber. But I always wonder what actually happens during those two mysterious hours. Well, that curiosity was satisfied when Jocelyn of Novalash decided to hire me as a Lash Technician for a day! Woohoo! All I can say is I better not give up my day job. Haha! Click to be enlightened! 😛 Robert Baden-Powell once said “Success in training the boy depends largely on the Scoutmaster’s own personal example.“ So here I am, being trained by my ‘Scoutmaster’, Jocelyn, owner of Lolita Group who specializes in Novalash Eyelash extensions. My success depends on her now! Haha! The tools to beautydom… If you think extending lashes is just sticking strands of fake lashes on the eyelid, you’re absolutely mistaken. A lot of knowledge, effort and patience goes into producing the perfect natural looking lashes. No easy way out here. Novalash extensions are single fiber artificial eyelashes with a tapered tip and blunt base. They are intended to be applied one at a time to one single natural eyelash hair. When applied properly, extensions do not have the opportunity to cause damage to the natural eyelashes. In fact, they grow, rest and shed right along with the natural eyelash to which they were applied, so there is no damage to neigboring lashes. I noticed many salons in Singapore extending lashes with the ‘tabbing’ technique, which is applying multiple fibers at once. This method not only produces an unnatural look but also damages the natural eyelashes. This is an example of extensions created using the ‘tabbing’ technique. One of Novalash’s requirements for a successful application technique is to use at least 3 lengths of extensions. Jocelyn explained that natural lashes have 3 phases in their growth cycle: growing, resting and shedding. The three-length bonding technique ensures that shorter (growing) natural lashes are bonded to an extension that is shorter in length (typically 6-8mm), resting natural lashes are bonded to a medium length extension (typically 10-12mm) and shedding natural lashes are bonded to longer extensions (typically 12 -14mm). These four pots of lashes are of the same thickness (0.25mm) but different lengths. The large numbers indicated on their covers refer to their lengths. The image below shows the difference between a set of lashes that has been done using only one length and a set that has been done using three lengths. The Novalash technique clearly results in a more attractive, thicker lash line and will also grow out beautifully and stay natural looking. To create a more dramatic effect, you can also use lashes of different diameters. These extensions below are of the same length but different thickness. Well, most technicians practise with these fake eyelashes first. But! Jocelyn decided to give me a more challenging first day by letting me practise on a real model. Eek! My teacher is none other than Ally, my lash stylist at Novalash. And here’s my model – my good friend and also brother’s girlfriend, Alice! If anything happens to her, my bro is gonna kill me. So I was very attentive during the lesson. Since Alice has never tried lash extensions, Ally suggested shorter and lighter lashes to let her get used to the look. Most of her extensions were 0.2mm thick. Ally placed a soothing eye patch below Alice’s eyes before separating her lower lashes from her upper ones with a tape. As mentioned before, I used to be reluctant about trying eyelash extensions, mainly because of the potential damage that the glue may cause. Jocelyn assured me that the Novalash extensions are bonded with award-winning medical-grade adhesives that do not contain formaldehyde. Most glues contain formaldehyde which is the main culprit of eye infections and irritation so formaldehyde-free adhesives certainly sounded more comforting. However, I have to warn you that it is still glue after all so still expect a certain degree of irritation in the eyes. If you want to minimise irritation, you can also try their Purity Fume-Free adhesive. The only difference lies in the strength of the bond. Since the formulation is lighter, do note that it may not hold as well as the regular Novalash glue known as the Platinum Bond. This means lash extensions may last three weeks or less. Here’s a quick ‘vis-a-vis’ comparison! Alright! I’m all ready to take up the challenge! Ally placed the adhesives on a plate beside me and handed two forceps to me – one to separate the lashes, the other to apply the extensions to the real lashes. She did a quick demonstration before she handed the reins over to me. Gulp! I used my left hand to isolate the eyelash I want to extend and my right hand to flip the extension, dip the glue and apply it to the natural lash. Picked out the lash I wanted to extend. Gently apply the extension on the lash. On top of that, I also had to make sure I matched the size of the extension to the natural lash so that it looks better and lasts longer. If you think all these look easy peasy, you’re certainly wrong. I had a hard time coordinating both hands as I had to ensure that I keep the lashes separated on the left hand while I struggle to look for the perfect extension, position it well on the forcep and dip the appropriate amount of glue with the right hand. Imagine drawing a perfect circle with one hand and drawing a square with the other simultaneously. That was not all! I also had to separate the extensions that were stuck together by gently grasping each extension with separate forceps and applying horizontal pressure to detach them from each other. At the same time, I had to constantly remind myself to be gentle and not to tug the lashes. Tough day at work eh? And the last step! And also the easiest step. Blow dry the lashes and sprinkle water to enhance the viscosity of the glue! This ensures that it holds the extensions for a longer period of time. And of course, remove the tape to reveal long luscious eyelashes! Thanks Alice for entrusting me with your precious lashes! Thanks Jocelyn and Ally for your wonderful guidance! From left to right: Jocelyn, Ally, Alice and me. My satisfied model! Ally perfected the look by touching up Alice’s lashes with more extensions. The greatest nemesis of Novalash extensions is Glycol. Any cosmetic product or cleanser containing glycols, organic solvents, urea or high concentrations of alcohol should be avoided to ensure the longevity of the extensions. This is because products such as these can potentially break down the adhesive bond and shorten the lifespan of the extensions. So Jocelyn also gave Alice a pot of Novalash alcohol-free Clean Lash cleanser pads worth SGD59.90 each. Each pad is soaked in pomegranate extract, pomegranate seed oil and mineral oil to remove makeup and to condition the lashes, extending their lifespan and ensuring that they remain flexible and radiant. Well, I did not go home empty-handed too. Since I’ve longer and heavier eyelash extensions now, Jocelyn gave me a tube of Novalash Lash Doctor serum to moisturize and to prolong the lifespan of my extensions AND natural lashes. NOVALASH Lash Doctor, SGD179 (4ml) Description: Lash+Doctor™ is an eyelash and eyebrow growth serum that is designed to condition and strengthen hair growth. Scientifically formulated, NOVALASH ‘s pH balanced formula is safe for contact wearers and compatible with NovaLash® adhesives. Lash+Doctor is enhanced with natural plant extracts, peptides and multi-vitamins, with continued use; fuller and fortified lashes will appear. Lash+Doctor helps lashes and brows become more resilient and resistant to loss and breakage, appearing full, lustrous and more youthful. How to use: Remove cap and click the container end (may take a few times). As soon as serum is visible, close eye and apply to lash line. One click will suffice to produce enough product for one application. Re-click and apply to other eye. Click again for application on eyebrow line. Of course, always enjoy tea in moderation as too much might lead to over-consumption of caffeine. The menu I ordered the Fresh Ginger, Ginger Ale – Jasmine Tea which has a pretty unique and earthy taste. It was spicy yet refreshingly aromatic. Think flavors of jasmine tea, ginger and soda merged into one. Fresh Ginger, Ginger Ale – Jasmine Tea Scrambled eggs and bacon are my definitive choices for brunch. Afterthoughts… Its design is a winner with its click top pen feature and signature sleek gold reflective surface that screams opulence and sophistication. I used this as a highlighter and a concealer, highlighting the cheekbones and toning down the redness around the nose and mouth area. I blended the concealer with my hands and this was the result. The odorless concealer banished the redness and smoothed out my skin. However, I thought it did not disguise the imperfections well. The blemishes and freckles were still pretty visible. You can see the extent of the coverage with my little demo below. Without YSL concealer With YSL concealer After applying layers of YSL concealer on my mole, it is still strikingly visible. I guess it fails on the coverage department. 🙁 However, despite its sheer coverage, I’m still a huge fan because of its light consistency which does not clog pores. The concealer also did not streak or blotch after hours of application so no retouching required. However, be prudent with the amount of concealer you apply around your eye area to prevent it from settling in the fine lines. 3 Honeyz crowns for its radiant finish and fab packaging! May contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Bismuth Oxychloride. Afterthoughts… I’m in awe of its lightweight formulation and matte finish that lasted all day. Here I am using the B 20 Beige shade. Like the concealer, the coverage was almost non-existent but I like how it evened out my skin tone and produced a glowing look. My foundation usually wears off after a couple of hours leaving an unsightly shiny look. The YSL foundation went against this theory and stayed on like super glue, keeping the excess oil at bay. For its oil-controlling abilities and light texture, 4 Honeyz crowns! Yves Saint Laurent ROUGE PUR COUTURE Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain – Rebel Nudes (SGD43) Description: A revolutionary nude glossy stain with all-day 3D luminous effect. Afterthoughts… Yay! No more ingesting harmful chemicals from lip products. I was happy that YSL steered clear of Parabens, Sulfates and Phthalates that obviously pose health-risks. Ingredients aside, I was also very fascinated with its ingenious applicator that is spongy and slightly slanted to grab the right amount of gloss for a shiny finish in a single swipe. I was given the 103 Pink Taboo (watermelon pink) lip stain which absolutely complements my skin tone. This intensity was created after three swipes. Don’t expect the typical lip gloss look – shimmery and sparkly. Instead, it gives you a sophisticated dewy rich color that’s alluring and sexy. Despite its super pigmented texture, the gloss feels light and non-sticky. It is certainly one of the best I’ve tried. 4.5 Honeyz crowns! Have you tried any YSL products too lately?
