So in this first edition, Dr Stryker will share some of the mistaken notions, common symptoms, techniques for screening and diagnosis of breast cancer. Please welcome Dr Bobby Stryker. Hello Honeyz Belles, my name is Bobby Stryker and it is my privilege today to be able to write for the readers of ilovebunny.net. I’ve been a fan of the site and a fan of Juliana’s for quite some time, we’ve even collaborated together on a number of occasions on my movie site maximumextreme.net where Jules has shared her surprising insight into movies. Today, however, I’m not here to talk about movies but something much more relevant to women everywhere. When not reviewing movies I work full time as a doctor specializing in general practice and family medicine. When Juliana asked me to do an article on breast cancer and breast awareness I agreed it was definitely something worth doing. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Singaporean women with an incidence of approximately 59 per 100,000 women per year. All women are at risk and the risk increases with age. There are some common misconceptions about breast cancer that women should be aware of. Although breast cancer has a hereditary component often there is actually no family history. Also, having large breasts, using deodorant sprays, wearing bras or having a breast injury does not increase breast cancer risk. Breast cancer does not always present as a breast lump but may present with bleeding and discharge from the nipple, retraction / inversion of the nipple, abnormal skin thickening and persistent rashes around the nipple. In fact nine out of ten breast lumps actually turn out to be non-cancerous as are most breast lumps in women under the age of 30. Remember, cancerous breast lumps tend to be painless and slow growing, so this is one instance where pain is a more positive sign. Early detection increases survival so this is where you must do your part by performing regular monthly self-breast examination (best done one week after your menses) and also by going for regular mammograms annually if you are aged 40 to 49 and every 2 years if you are over 50. If you are under 40 please do not request your doctor send you for a mammogram as breast tissue in younger women is denser meaning mammograms are not accurate. If you do find a lump or any concerning breast changes, then please see your family doctor promptly for a medical examination and referral to see a breast specialist. The breast specialist may perform special scans or take a biopsy to confirm your diagnosis. Having breast cancer is not a terminal diagnosis and does not guarantee that you will need to have a mastectomy (breast removal). Certain breast cancers, if detected early, can be treated with non-surgical measures such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormonal treatments. Survival from breast cancer in Singapore is improving thanks to the increased awareness of Singaporean women, early detection of cancer and in turn early treatment. Loving yourself isn’t vanity. It is sanity. I remember first seeing cryotherapy clinics claiming to be able to help with weight loss popping up everywhere ages ago. Of course I dismissed them as another baseless attempt to prey on my constant desire to stay trim with as little effort as possible. Even B said that it didn’t make much sense medically. Well lo and behold! Several years on and suddenly cryotherapy is all the rage and yeap, you guessed it, even B is touting all the medical evidence behind cryotherapy now. Specifically how it can reduce inflammation and speed recovery post workout as well as assist in weight loss. You can find images of the likes of Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg, celebs and athletes, using cryo-chambers as part of their training regimes and singing their praises. Medical science keeps evolving so quickly that it seems even docs themselves are sometimes playing catch-up and have to keep themselves up to date to ensure they practice the best possible medicine based on current available evidence. B says that when he started med school he was told by his lecturers that 50% of everything he’d learn would be either be proven wrong or out of date by the time he graduated, what they couldn’t tell him is which 50%. 😛 So this time when I had the opportunity to experience a new body contouring treatment at Celevenus Aesthetic & Wellness Clinic , I shouted gimme gimme gimme! The experienced team suggested that instead of going for the cryo freezing option, I instead try their Venus Legacy Heat Treatment . I’ve always been bottom heavy and I know well that there is no such thing as targeted spot fat loss, you have to train your whole body to eventually get the results and fat loss where you want it. These results truly surprised and impressed me. Some slimming clinics in the past have warned me against exercising for fear that I may get bulky and end up with the opposite results to what I want. But in reality, even if you train with weights, ladies generally won’t bulk up as women simply lack the testosterone needed to do so. Even a lot of guys struggle to bulk up in the gym though they might be training hard and downing gallons of protein shake! Speaking of the title, the yuletide reference certainly inspired one of the key decorations for this year - a Halloween Christmas tree! To align with the ghoulish theme of the season, I avoided decorating the tree too much like an actual Christmas tree, opting instead for a desolate look, spruced up slightly with some black satin ribbons and topped off with a witch's hat (though I think the Mayor's Hat from the movie would have been a better choice). I love challenging myself and testing my limits, both mentally and physically. Weddings really are a symphony of organized chaos. Everything that can go wrong usually does. But with there seemingly being more photobooth companies in Singapore than people, how do you decide which one is right for you? Well, read on to find out! Photobooths really have become a staple item at weddings these days. They’re suitable for all ages and give your guests a nice memento of your big day so they don’t feel bored and neglected. I was over the moon! In the planning stages, they came down to the venue to discuss their ideal setup location as well as the complicated schedule for my big day. With guests due to start arriving at 5.30-6pm, I was so happy to see the La Novella team at the venue setting up their booth at 4pm! Talk about perfectionism! Despite my wedding being a relatively small and intimate affair, the booth was being manned by 5 people with Gui Jie of La Novella manually taking every photo himself. Not only did this ensure that every photo was perfectly framed and delivered to our guests super fast, it also meant that guests didn’t have to worry about checking their position on a screen with the pressure of a time limit as imposed by some other photobooth companies. Our guests had a lot of fun and praised how fast their photos were printed out. Even my mommy had a good time! Although not the original backdrop that we had agreed on, La Novella came through with an even dreamier backdrop and some very gorgeous props which were perfectly in keeping with my Disney theme. Purple clouds, pink castle, Tinkerbelle, glass slipper logo and a garden-esque backdrop – seriously, what more can we ask for? Actually, La Novella also provides customised photo frame designing services that would fit your theme like a glove. This was what they created for our Instagram prints. Speaking of Instagram photo booths, our guests could also hashtag their Instagram photos with our official wedding hashtag #Bobbliana, then La Novella would instantly print out the photos and hand them to our guests later. Impressive eh? La Novella seriously upped the ante for wedding photo booths with this one. I highly recommend every wedding-couple-to-be to include this feature as now, you can literally put the Photo Booth in your guests’ hands. Trust me, this will significantly reduce the waiting time at the actual booth and instead, capture more incredible impromptu moments and even make it accessible to the older relatives who may have difficulty standing in line for long periods or walking to the booth. I also very much appreciated how the folks at La Novella took the initiative to place these informative boards at different parts of the venue to explain how the different photobooths work. In amidst the hubbub, I managed to take a few photos with my friends and family myself. Thankfully La Novella were kind enough to keep all my photos and pass them to me at the end of the night, after all, pockets are hard to come by on wedding gowns. The La Novella guys were also extremely considerate and mindful of my wedding schedule making sure that the photobooth was closed for key moments such as our wedding entrance, my surprise dance for Bobby and during our speeches, ensuring we had our guests’ undivided attention. I think I really hit the jackpot with La Novella. In the midst of all the wedding mayhem, La Novella stayed cool, calm and collected everyone’s photos so fast my guests were left smiling from ear to ear. What better way to infuse a little magic into your wedding than to actually infuse some magic into your wedding! No I haven’t gone crazy, trust me! This was no children’s party magician; this was magic of the highest order! To make things more exciting, he was even able to tailor some of the tricks to be in line with the theme of our wedding! Wow, I was really amazed I tell you! Come our actual wedding day, even though everything else was running late, Alexander wasn’t, furthermore he actually came early which turned out to be something of a godsend. As tensions were running high, Alexander’s cool and calm demeanor helped to calm everyone down. Fluent in English, Chinese and various dialects, he was able to entertain everyone, young and old alike. He was so captivating that even our emcees were distracted from their duties, almost delaying our march-in. I would later have family and friends telling me how enthralled they were by his performance, some even requested his contact details for events and parties of their own. We asked Alexander to stay on after his allotted performance for dinner and to enjoy the rest of the evening socially. What we weren’t expecting is that Alexander would go above and beyond the call of duty to entertain our guests opportunistically throughout the entire wedding to the evenings close. A true gentleman, professional and magician extraordinaire, our only regret was not being able to see his mind-blowing illusions for ourselves. “Imagination and makeup is the only weapon in the war against reality.” I’ve been suffering from fairytale withdrawal symptoms since my Disney wedding more than a year ago. It was certainly an exciting and enchanting experience escaping from reality for a while and totally immersing in my very own imaginative world inspired by fairytales. I’ve actually been reading the comments about our wedding on various news outlets and one “feedback” that keeps popping up is – Why didn’t the couple do an Alice In Wonderland themed photoshoot too? If we could, we would feature every iconic Disney story. However, due to time constraints, we could only select a few stories for the wedding shoot. I’ve always wanted to recreate the magic again, maybe for our wedding anniversary or something. Last month, the opportunity finally came knocking on our front door when Urban Decay sent me their Alice Through the Looking Glass makeup collection. Woo hoo! I showcased the colours in a first impression post and the lipsticks in a Wonderland makeup shoot entry . As for the new palette, I figured that if I just do a regular makeover, it would be an absolute borefest. The Disney Geek in me can’t allow that! Well, now that we have the luxury of time and a complete Alice In Wonderland makeup set, courtesy of Urban Decay and Disney, I guess it’s about time we head back to fairytaleland and write another #Bobbliana Disney-inspired chapter. This time, the location will be in my humble studio, Honeyz Paint House, and photos by our good friend and also our actual pre-wedding photographer, Yong Thye again! As for the makeup collection itself, I wanted to make sure you belles get to see the shades applied and matched in the most creative way. Hence, I consulted makeup extraordinaire, Clara Song for her expert advice and to help us style and create the look together. She did a brilliant job (despite the short notice) – Alice’s doe eyes, Mad Hatter’s gradient lips… Clara simply nailed it! If you’ve a fervent desire for all things Disney and fairytale too, you’re gonna love everything about this Alice In Wonderland line. The attention that went into the packaging is astounding and of course, the colours are also as fanciful as the Cheshire Cat’s mane. The combination of neutral and loud shimmery colours makes it the perfect palette to bring on my travels. All in all, the highly-pigmented eyeshadows simply scream stunning! The lipsticks feel very moist and creamy and do not leave my lips feeling dry, not even the red matte one! I love the variety of finishes each shade produces. The finishes range from sheer, shimmery to matte. Of course, I’m also a huge fan of their rich and bold payout that gives the right amount of drama to the whole fairytale inspired look. I’ve checked with Sephora Singapore and they do not have any news of this new Disney collection yet. Don’t fret!
