“Love your skin, give oil a go.” – Shu Uemura This sounds particularly counterintuitive when 80% of my skin is oily. However, beauty giant Shu Uemura, well known for its highly revered oil cleansers, is determined to reshape my beauty beliefs by extending their cleansing oil line further with the new Blanc:Chroma Brightening and Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil. I was invited to a skincare workshop hosted by Shu Uemura and Clozette a few months ago where Shu Uemura demonstrated how oil can dislodge trapped debris in the pores without harshly depleting all moisture like regular soap does. The phrase “Love your skin, give oil a go.” was clearly etched in their workshop objectives. Hmm, we see what you’re trying to do, Shu Uemura and we’re onto you and all your cleansing secrets! Haha! Honestly, I’ve almost forgotten about my ‘cleansing oil’ roots until the introduction of the new Blanc:Chroma cleansing oil. Micellar Cleansing Water products have been dominating the beauty charts in the past couple of years for its gentle formula so consequently, I also jumped on the bandwagon and switched to water-based products for my makeup removal routine. This year, Shu Uemura is all out to reclaim its ‘Top Cleanser Title’ by packing all the indulgence in a bottle. Let me explain further – so what makes the new cleansing oil so unique is that it is also infused with volcanic clay extract and polishing Lipo HA to gently exfoliate your skin while you remove your makeup. And now it’s my turn to give the luxurious cleansing oil a go! Moving beyond stubborn makeup removal, Blanc:Chroma Brightening and Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil is the first volcanic clay cleansing oil that works to gently exfoliate and polish away accumulated melano-stains for brighter, transparent and smoother skin. Melano-stains are dead cells containing melanin on the skin surface that cause uneven and dull skin tone. Its combination of purifying clay extract and polishing Lipo HA lightens the skin tone by thoroughly removing accumulated melano-stains. How to use: Step 1: Use 3-4 pumps of cleansing oil on dry hands. Step 2: Spread gently and thoroughly over dry face. Step 3: Add a few drops of lukewarm water to face to emulsify. (Oil will turn milky white.) Step 4: Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. My verdict: My vacation cleansing squad usually includes cleansing water, cleansing wipes, facial cleanser and exfoliating cleansers. However, for the recent surprise birthday staycay organised by Bobby, I decided to simplify my tedious cleansing routine since I had to pack in such short notice. I brought only my Shu Uemura Blanc:Chroma Brightening & Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil. Yup. I’m keeping it sane this time. 😛 And it seems like even this little guy agrees too! Check out that smile! Having fun at Equarius Hotel. Upon application, the cleansing oil felt just like any other oil-based product – greasy and uncomfortable. I began to wonder what makes Shu Uemura cleansing oils superior to other similar products, in that one bottle is sold every 7 seconds worldwide? After massaging it for a good 10 seconds, I began to understand why. I could actually feel the gunk on my face being lifted off with every rub. Yes. I could literally feel fine granules forming on my face. A closer look and I realised they are actually blackheads that were drawn out of the congested pores. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better than this, another beauty miracle happened – after throughly rinsing my face with water, all the cleansing oil was gone, leaving no trace of grease. This is amazing as most oil-based cleansers would always leave behind a thin film of grease which warrants a second cleansing step. I hate that as this always dries out the skin so this one-step cleanser really gives other cleansing oils and makeup removers a run for their money. Okay okay. I know what you’re dying to find out – its makeup-removing efficacy eh? Here’s a quick demo of its abilities: I applied CC cream, waterproof eyeliner and lipstick on the back of my hand. And I squirted some Blanc:Chroma cleansing oil on my hand and gently rubbed it a few times. Then I rinsed it with water and wiped off the water with tissue paper. Do note that I did not rub or tug my skin at all but only applied gentle circular massages during the process. This was the result. Even though there was still some eyeliner residue left, I was happy with what I saw. Most cleansers would require vigorous rubbing to achieve this result. I also used it to remove my tacky hair styling creams and it does the job pretty effectively too. So is the Shu Uemura Blanc:Chroma Brightening & Polishing Gentle Cleansing Oil perfect? I would say almost.Yes, it did remove my makeup efficiently but it also stung my eyes during the process. Ouch! It happened a few times when I tried to open my eyes to check if the mascara is completely removed. Nonetheless, there is still one good thing that came out of the ordeal – I didn’t lose any eyelash. Well, it always happens when I try to remove makeup from my eyes but this time, my lashes stayed intact while I remove all vestiges of my stubborn mascara with the cleansing oil. Pretty impressive eh? Alright, one last compliment for the cleansing oil – its environmental-friendly bottle. Apparently, the bottle is constructed with at least 75% post-consumer recycled plastic. 2015 has been a doozy of a year for Honeyz Cube . We welcomed our new Beauty Poet (aka Blog Editor), Alice, into the HC family, acquired a new office (Woo hoo! More about that later.) and even brought Health Couture to life with a fitness and wellness workshop earlier this year! I wanted to start the new year on a healthy note so I teamed up with my husband, Bobby, the professional trainers at Zesty Kickz and cold-brewed tea connoisseur, Infuusa and organised our very first Health Couture event for our supporters at Honeyz Cube. The event was held on the first day of February and since we were only a couple of weeks away from Valentine’s Day and the Lunar New Year, we thought we could come up with a wholesome slimming programme, aptly named ‘How to lose weight in two weeks?‘. We had an awesome time jiggling our fats to non-existence during Zesty Kickz’s Zumba segment and uncovering all the diet myths at the health talk by Dr Bobby Stryker. We also got to enjoy tasty calorie-free beverages, courtesy of Infuusa! It was one hell of a party and I was extremely happy when our participants asked for another session. Whoopee! Well, a new Health Couture event is in the works. Meanwhile, let’s recap all the excitement at our February Health Couture workshop! Every Honeyz Cube event needs a cool goodie bag so I prepared these cute satin babies for our participants days before the event. Sprayed my favorite fragrance on them too for good luck! And here we are at our first Health Couture event. Meet our HC pixies, my brother, Seb and our Beauty Poet, Alice ! I’ve the most supportive mommy, I tell you! Even my little bro was listening attentively to his big brother’s presentation on healthy eating. Many participants were intrigued by the new diet advice Bobby shared and came forward to clarify their doubts about the topic. Many also congratulated us for a successful event and even suggested another Health Couture workshop! Yay! We couldn’t be happier for the positive response. Group hug! Sponsored Review The low humidity and dry environment in airline cabins always take a toll on my skin, sapping every inkling of moisture out of me. So to prevent myself from emerging from the plane looking like a dried prune, I always make sure I bring all the skincare items I need to replenish the moisture in my skin, lips and even hair. Okay, here’s the problem – I also like to travel light (well, who doesn’t?) and lugging a thousand beauty products on the plane just doesn’t cut it. So when I discovered this new beauty power duo that can practically replace all the beauty products I need, I was like…  “Shut up and take my money!” Haha! Yup. So on my recent trip to the Maldives, I changed things up by leaving all my skincare in my suitcase and bringing only my Glam-it! products. Feel Me Hand Cream This rich hand cream contains a high concentration of shea butter, collagen and an infusion of almond oil, apricot oil and licorice extracts. The fast absorbing, anti-aging formula will moisturise dry hands leaving them smooth and lightly-scented. – Suitable for all skin types – Paraben and sulfate free How to use: Apply after washing hands or as often as need throughout the day Price: SGD13 Afterthoughts… The product disappears into my skin shortly after application but amazingly, my hand remains soft and moisturised. I don’t know how the product did it. Most of the time, hand creams simply vanish, leaving my skin dry and wrinkly again so I have to re-apply the products. The few instances I don’t have to do that is when I’m using a cream that is as thick as pea soup. And that’s not great too as it usually feels very tacky on the skin making it impossible to touch anything without leaving nasty grease stains. This cream has a nice understated scent and does not leave my skin feeling icky and slick. My only gripe is the absence of UV filters in the cream. I was travelling in daylight hours to the Maldives and like many others, I’ve long heard about the spectacular aerial view of the Maldives’ coral atolls so naturally, I was glued to my plane window for a full 15 minutes before landing. Well, I got my astonishing aerial view but I guess I also exposed myself to serious sun damage. We all know that the Maldives is located right on the equator so the amount of UV exposure is higher. And to rub salt into the wound, the UV rays are also more intense at higher altitudes. Talk about a double whammy! So if you’re like me – love peeking out of the window during landing, remember to apply products with sunblock properties to protect your skin. Nonetheless, I’m still a huge fan of the long lasting effects of the Feel Me Hand Cream and its budget friendly price. 3.5 Honeyz crowns! Petite Amie likes it too! 😀 Glam-it! Universal BB Balm Universal BB Balm is delicately fragranced in a tempting chocolate scent and a lifesaver for your chapped lips, hands, and all dry areas. The BB Balm: – soothes baby rashes – massages (including baby massages) – reduces and prevents stretch marks – softens and removes cuticles – softens dry areas and patches (elbows, feet and ankles) – moisturizes chapped lips – prevent split ends and reduce flyaways How to use: Keep lips, cuticles and dry heels, soft, supple and naturally protected. Ingredients: It contains shea butter, argan oil and rosehip seed oil. Price: SGD21 Afterthoughts… Travelling and multi-purpose beauty products should be the best of friends. Haha! And since the Glam-it! BB Balm can be used on your body, hair and even lips, you bet your bottom dollar that this was the first product I put into my bag. At first glance, I thought the texture might feel like tiger balm or vaseline – soft and balmy but I was wrong. The texture is the hard balmy type and after a few swipes, a thin greasy film appears on top. And that’s all you got. The thick consistency does not allow generous applications of the product. This is not exactly a bad thing because I can now control frizz without leaving my hair too greasy or uncomfortable to the touch. On top of that, we mostly likely ingest the products that we apply on our lips so the fact that the BB balm is organic makes it a perfect lip care balm too. My only suggestion – why not add a partition in the pot? You see, I don’t want to apply the product to my feet or hair, then use it on my lips later. To carry two pots of the product also defeats the purpose of ‘travelling light’. With a partition in the pot, I can assign one side to my body, and another side to my lips. This could even be a special travel edition of the balm! 😀 For now, I like how the BB Balm deeply restores the moisture that was wicked away by the dry air in the cabin without being overly oily. 3 Honeyz crowns! Everytime I touch my face after using the charcoal mask, it would feel incredibly velvety soft and smooth. And you think the results may be short-lived but hell no. The clear, baby smooth complexion lasts all day and night! Yup. This could easily give other pore minimising products, pore packs, charcoal masks a run for their money. However, its consistency is rather thick. So if you apply a hefty amount, say two 50-cent coin size dollops of the mask, it would be rather challenging to spread it all over your face without tugging the skin. The removal process… don’t even go there. So remember to go easy with the application and you’re well on your way to having crystal clear skin. I might have applied too much of the product on my face as these effects went away when I reduced the amount applied in subsequent uses. So does it distinguish itself from other luxurious gel masks? Upon application, the mask produces a slight tingling sensation which is absolutely invigorating. My skin feels very refreshed after removing the mask. I think it’s comparable to Laneige’s Water Sleeping Pack Ex and Olay’s Olay Aquaction Softening Sleeping Mask but not necessarily better. It’s the kind of mask that makes you feel good when you’re using it. Your face would look pleasingly refreshed for a while and you’re back to square one after a few minutes. If you’re looking for a more hydrating option, I think the Origins Drink Up Intensive would be more suited for you. In light of the release of the much-anticipated ’50 Shades of Grey’ film, Menswear specialist, Paul Fredrick , posed this question to me – Who is your dream ‘Mr Grey’? Besides civility, wealth and power as described in the novel, my ideal ‘Mr Grey’ also entails many other alluring qualities. He is charming, witty, beautiful and possesses an intimidating yet gentle demeanour. Of course, he is also impeccably stylish. It’s all about the seductive sharp suits and perfectly tailored ensembles! Needless to say, my Christian Grey is none other than my husband, Bobby. 🙂 He’s charming, well-built and has a great sense of fashion. As such, it is no surprise that he has the ultimate fantasy wardrobe of bespoke form-fitting suits that I believe would absolutely sit well with E. L. James’ Mr Grey. I’m also in love with Paul Fredrick’s business wear and casual styles that would portray my dream Mr Grey perfectly. So I thought it would be fun to invade my husband’s wardrobe and Paul Fredrick’s latest collection to create a Christian Grey-inspired style board for you. Woo hoo! Now let’s click to embark on a dark and passionate fashion affair! A single breasted ash suit, shiny grey tie and an understated pocket square – what better way to depict the mysterious and charming Mr Grey? To reflect Grey’s business-savvy look, Bobby used a simple straight fold of the pocket square to give a more sleek professional look instead of the triple point, pyramid, four step and other more playful folds. Bobby is also wearing a tie bar from Dunhill . Tie bars were re-popularised, as were the pocket squares to some extent, by the impeccably smart Matt Bomer. Replicate the look with these stylish items from Paul Fredrick . Mr Grey needs his timeout with Anastasia Steele too. This is what I would imagine him to wear on a casual day out. Sleek white shirt and checkered sweater while still sticking to the grey and preppy formula. Christian Grey is a hanky person, remember? Last year was wedding year so I channelled all my time to my Secret Garden Fairytale themed nuptials . And the by-product? A memorable wedding but also a very neglected Honeyz Cube with minimal content updates and events. So this year I decided to turn that all around and shift (most of) my focus to my beauty encyclopedia. Well, ‘most of’ cus I still gotta leave some of the attention for my dearest hubs. 😛 Anyway, I organized a Health Couture workshop, did fashion shoots and hosted marketing campaigns within a few short weeks. And you can just imagine how the weeks leading up to these events were like – yes, a whirlwind of meetings and preparation work. But this also means… more opportunities for office wear OOTDs. Whoopee doopee! It’s been ages since I donned jackets, cute work dresses and killer heels. And now that I have the office as my runway, so why not?
