“Doing nothing often leads to the very best of something.” - Winnie the Pooh I remember hearing this quote for the first time in the movie Christopher Robin (2018) which tells the story of a now-grown-up Christopher Robin who tried to find his long-lost friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. The movie has many fun moments and important reminders like this quote, for many of us who focus too much on creating a well-oiled future but forgot about living in the moment. You never know what you'll find when you're not looking! Wise words coming from the bear whom I think was certainly 'inaptly nicknamed' the Willy Nilly Silly Old Bear. 😅 If you're like me, perpetually in awe of these unexpected enlightening words from Pooh, you may be happy to know that his wisdom is plastered all over this latest collection by NTUC. A couple of entries back, I announced that Honeyz Cube 2.0 and its new showroom is finally coming to fruition and what do you know! My phone and social media channels were immediately inundated with encouraging messages and well wishes. Thanks guys! The influx of positive words certainly boost my confidence and inspired me to continue living the life of my dreams. As emphasized in my ‘How I Found My Dream Job’ blog post , in order to score that dream job, you’ll need to buck the system, meet amazing people, seize new opportunities and come up with a long-term goal. And how else to do it than securing a stellar internship with a great company and working alongside your future boss and colleagues? Yowza! You bet your bottom dollar it’ll be the perfect place for you to learn the ropes, expand your network and show your prospective employer you are determined to bring the company vision to life. I’ve definitely been a job interviewee but I’ve also been in the hot seat as ‘the interviewer’ several times and during my stint, I noticed there are a few unspoken factors that leading Singapore internship providers also look out for. Wanna know what else influences the decision of our potential employers? Read on! 1) Look Good On Google Too When there are so many prospective candidates that look great on paper, employers in this Digital Age are looking beyond the pages of your CV and possibly looking towards the pages of your Facebook. So it’s time to step up your game and make sure your online persona is in line with the ideals of the company you’re looking for. Clean up your Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google Plus profiles as these are usually the first few sites that Google pulls up. Keep those embarrassing partying photos away and instead, showcase your achievements, skills and interests. Remember! Google is like your unofficial resume so always check that it shows the best side of you. Thankfully, Google isn’t always right. Here’s what I found when I first googled my husband’s name all those years ago when we were still getting to know each other. Haha! 2) One Size Does Not Fit All I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen CVs simply following standard google templates. This may be useful as a starting ground but when every CV starts to look identical and void of character or flavour, you know there is an issue. Set yourself apart by following the guidelines but throwing in some of your own flair. Make the CV unique but at the same time tailor it to what you think the employer might be looking for. An employer for the CIA will not be looking for the same qualities as the employer for Rocket Scientists. Keep this in mind. By tailoring your CV, you show your sincerity and enthusiasm for the post. 3) Generic Is Boring Keep your referrees happy so that they might also tailor their references for you in such a way as to look favourable in the specific field you are applying for. As a recruiter, I would think positively whenever I came across a reference which was not only positive but could also be applicable to my industry. This also tells me that this job candidate must be a good one for the referee to go out of their way to customise the reference for them. Finally… After the interview, remember to write an email to thank your interviewer for his/her time. It’s good to also take this opportunity to reiterate your keen interest in the position and offer to provide any additional information that can help support their decision-making process. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day, so you may not be lucky first time off the bat, but don’t lose heart! Try and try again. You can also ask for feedback from interviewers to see what you may have done differently. Take it as a learning experience to further hone your job application skills. Soon you’ll be a dab hand, applying and interviewing for a post will become second nature and you’ll finally cinch that position you’ve been eyeing up! Many internships in Singapore offer brilliant opportunities for career advancement so I hope my suggested pointers above can help you get a great head start in your job interviews and eventually, win that dream job of yours! These days, I’m overwhelmed by the abundance of bag choices out there. What about you? Do you know which is the best and right bag for you? Every woman’s handbag reflects her tastes (style, beauty and maybe even partner?) as well as personality. But! Buying the right bag can often be quite a headache. These designer purses cost an arm and a leg so besides producing that stylish image, the ideal handbag also has to be functional for frequent use since it is wallet wrecking to buy different bags to go with different outfits. To help you with your investment bag purchases, I will be posting a series of bag reviews in Honeyz. In the posts, I will scrutinize bags and their functionalities and provide tips on designer purse care to help you choose from the various styles of luxury bags. These days we have a plethora of bag choices to satisfy our rapacious shopping appetites. Here’s the justification in picture. I walked into Resorts World™ Sentosa’s (RWS) shopping arcade last weekend and this was what I saw. Maybe ‘abundance’ from the introductory statement is too mild a term. With this, it makes sense to start a series of bag reviews. Furthermore, you can also learn how to differentiate between the knock off and the real stuff through the images provided in the reviews. 😀 Back to RWS… As usual, this brand never fails to consume all my attention. In my opinion, Chanel handbags are timeless and less trite than bags of many other brands. It exudes elegance and brings the right amount of taste and class to any outfit. Hence, Chanel has always been my numero uno choice for an investment bag. Incidentally, many Honeyz readers have emailed and requested for a review of the Chanel Mademoiselle Bowling Bag that I carry in some of my fashion shoots. Therefore, I decided to review the bowling bag in this first Honeyz Bag Review post! 😀 Last fall, I was browsing through the tantalizing bags on Chanel’s website and I drooled over Mademoiselle Bowling bag the second I saw it. (Or it could be Blake Lively’s alluring golden locks that struck my fancy.) Anyway, I immediately fell in love with its perky design and I thought it showed off a certain edge and character compared to the classics without losing the brand’s ethos. So with no further ado, I bought the bag. Tada! I got myself the black Caviar bag with silver hardware in size bowling. If you’re wondering how big size bowling is compared to the rest, you might be interested to know that the bag comes in four sizes -mini bowling, small bowling, bowling and large bowling. Here is a picture of the bags with their respective sizes tagged for comparison. The prices vary from bag to bag depending on the material – so far the following options are available to Chanel bag fans (Iguana, Matte Alligator, Galuchat, Jersey, Perforated Patent Calfskin, aged Calfskin, Satin, Patent Calfskin) and the sizes are as follow: Mini Bowling 5.5″ x 9.3″ x 4.1″, Small Bowling 6.3″ x 11.8″ x 4.3″, Bowling 6.9 x 14 x 6, Large Bowling 10.2″ x 14.2″ x 6.3″, Maxi Bowling 11″ x 18.1″ x 9.1″. All of the bags feature brand’s famous chain and double CC pendant. Material I chose the black caviar leather due to practical reasons – no color transfer problems, easy-to-clean and scratch resistant properties. Caviar leather is textured with small pebbles and is highly durable. Just thought you might be interested… I heard that Caviar leather is actually made of stingray skin and not calf skin. However, many purse forums had clarified that Caviar leather is embossed calf skin in Chanel terminology. Well, I’ll leave it to you to judge. Design If you’re wondering how long the bag strap will look on your frame, here are some photos for you to gauge. I stand at 161cm and this is the length when the strap is fully drawn. Not too bad for my height I guess. Any taller and the bag may drop at the waist which will make the entire ensemble look awkward. My friend JW stands at 153cm and this is where the bag strap stops on her frame when she holds it the same way. And this is how it looks like when she wears it short. Warning: The sound of the chains being pulled might be sightly annoying for some. Not surprisingly, the material and craftsmanship is top-notch which I believe is made to last for a lifetime. Here’s an image of the bag’s interior: The bag is divided into 3 compartments. It also has an additional pocket at the side as shown below. The storage space did not excite me as much. This is what it can contain – A coin pouch, tissue pouch, card holder, phone, shades pouch and some basic make up tools (foundation case, lip gloss and blusher) in the middle zip compartment. The bag also bulges slightly and takes on a weird shape when I try to stuff an extra packet of tissue into it. Since it is not roomy at all, I’ll usually use it on the weekends when I don’t dump a thousand ‘necessities’ into my bag. There’s no zip or magnetic closure for this bag. The straps close the bag when drawn. Conclusion Despite its pathetic storage space and lack of proper closure, I would still say it is one hell of a bag – decadent with an element of fun. I wear it short for a more casual look and long to add an elegant vibe to both my work and weekend wardrobe. 4 Honeyz crowns. Last but not least! You have worked hard to acquire your luxury bags so I’m pretty sure you want to treat them right and well so that they will last you for years to come. So consider these tips if you want to maintain the quality of your designer bags. Use a dust bag to protect your baby from being scuffed. If you have misplaced your dust bags like I did, natural fibre soft pillow slips are good substitutes. When you’re at the office, check desk or filing cabinet for sharp edges for splinters that could scratch and put puncture holes in your bag. Keep a dust bag in office to cover your bag if that’s possible. Avoid handling the designer bag after applying beauty products, face foundations or hand creams. If the weather is really bad and raining consider using a less special handbag. Rain and water are bad for your bag. There are many good water repellent and leather cleaning products out there on the market these days. It is always preferable to wipe off a wet leather handbag immediately. But if that is not possible for some reason, allow a wet or damp leather handbag to dry naturally in ambient room air temperatures, away from any heat sources Don’t use your bag as a rest to place paper and write notes. Pointed pens can leave impression tool marks through paper rested on firm leathers. If your bag has a chain handle, store the chain inside the bag to avoid scratching the outside leather when the bag is resting. Avoid taking your special bag to the supermarket! Trolleys can scratch your bag and mark it permanently, as can spillages from foodstuffs such as yoghurts, cream, dips, squashy fruit, milk and even leaking cleaning products. For long term storage, undo strap buckles so that impressions are not created. Then if you wish to wear the strap across the body messenger style and need maximum strap length or need to shorten it to wear underarm style at a later date, this unbuckling of the straps before storage will stop areas becoming impressed and unattractive. If you are concerned with the bag holding it’s shape, loosely stuffing it with tissues will help. Be careful not to over-stuff it though as doing so may cause it to stretch. Use a Purse Hanger. Purse hangers are all the rage these days ladies! It keeps your handbag off the dirty floor and can be used almost anywhere that there is a firm ledge to hold your purse. This includes: restaurant tables, desks, dressers, the neighborhood bar, nightstands, shelves, and more. Floors and bathroom stalls are terrible for your bag and a breeding ground for bacteria. Never ever use household cleaners or chemicals to clean your handbag! Only use cleaners designed for leather materials. Purchase a high quality leather cleaner and follow the directions exactly. Clean the inside of your purse. If your purse has a satin lining, a damp sponge and mild soap will work well. Be careful with the pens and pencils. Your cell phone can very easily transfer dirt to the interior of your bag, along with makeup that is not closed properly. Don’t just toss the makeup into the bottom of your purse. Get a small plastic soft-sided case to hold those essentials instead. When I see models with freckles, I’m always so envious as their freckles are usually beautifully sprinkled across the bridge of their noses while mine seem to be out to do the exact opposite for me. I was the most conscious of this when I modelled for a Korean makeup TV show last year. Bless his cotton socks, the makeup artist tried his best not to let me notice but I could tell he was spending hours just trying to cover my spots and blemishes for all those inevitable close-up shots! Add to the mix some nice new fine lines courtesy of being out on the sunny road all day and you have all the ingredients for a game of noughts and crosses! After playing hide and seek with the camera for far too long, I’m finally feeling confident enough to stand right in front of the camera lens, up close and personal, once again! And to what do I owe this new found self confidence? Lemme show you! The RevLite laser treatment at Celevenus Wellness & Aesthetic Clinic is ideal for the treatment of skin pigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, aging skin, enlarged pores and sun related damage! While sunlight may damage your skin, this focused form of light energy can trigger essential collagen production in your skin to actually rejuvenate it! After the careful application of some numbing cream by the ever-cheerful Linda, I was able to enjoy the RevLite treatment even with my low pain threshold, under the skilful hands of Dr Dylan. The photothermal energy will target and eliminate the fine vessels that cause redness and the unwanted melanin responsible for pigmented lesions. What about downtime you ask? To be honest, I have pretty sensitive skin so there was some downtime for me, especially after using the Broadband Light treatment on the broken veins on the side of my nose. I broke out in rashes and also suffered from mild folliculitis for a few days. This may not be the same for everyone as I heard from the team at Celevenus that most of their patients have little to no downtime. During our initial consultation, Dr Dylan also did warn me about possible allergic reactions to the treatments and suggested I used anti-histamines to curb the symptoms should any arise. Here's a visual look at how my sensitive skin reacted to the Broadband Light treatment instantly. The redness subsided after a few hours. Thereafter, my pores started to look more refined and the brown spots also started to crust and form a scab. Once the scabs aged and fell out after a few days, the brown spots and skin lesions were immediately less prominent. The pinnacle moment of a wedding is probably the wedding entrance aka the ‘First March-In’ which will inevitably set the tone for the rest of the ceremony. Many ideas started rolling in for the ultimate wedding entrance… – Arriving in a horse-drawn carriage Too cliche and the horses might start pooping all over the restaurant. And so we were watching HBO one day and coincidentally got to revisit the epic scene in Disney’s Enchanted where the princess (Amy Adams) leaves her animated kingdom for the concrete jungle of New York City. *lightbulb moment* As we sat down to envisage the theme for our wedding, we both figured what better way to get the imaginative juices flowing than a fairytale movie marathon. My hubby-to-be needed no persuading being an avid movie and fairytale fan. 😀 This was how the idea of connecting a fairytale story to the real time events at our wedding was born. Haha! An evil curse has been cast upon her and now, she’s trapped in a fairytale world. Doesn’t sound like a bad predicament yea? Wrong! The caveat is – if the princess can’t find her knight in shining armour by sunset, the spell will remain and she will be imprisoned in this magical dimension forever. It became a race against time to find a wedding photographer. Between the two of us, my hubby and I chanced upon the award-winning Lightbox Productions. I really can’t say enough good things about Kwang and his team. We met Kwang on several occasions before the wedding as Kwang wanted to really know who we were and where we were coming from so that he could get on the same page as us. Not only did Kwang manage to get on the same page as us, he was in the same book and probably the same library as us come wedding time. Haha! Kwang’s photos have been nothing short of breathtaking and his professional work ethic and guidance on the actual day meant that he really went above and beyond anything we had expected. Truly outstanding. 🙂 Photo Booth – La Novella No one knows quite when it started but these days having a wedding without a photobooth is like having a wedding without a bride, almost unheard of! But with so many photobooth companies around, you really are spoilt for choice. I was even further spoilt when I discovered the absolutely amazing La Novella photobooth company. As soon as they heard the theme for my wedding, they jumped head over heels with excitement. Their photos are simply class leading and combined with their incomparable level of service, beautiful customized backdrops and props, it comes as no surprise that each and every one of my guests left the photobooth grinning from ear to ear. Entertainment – Meta Illusions We didn’t plan our wedding to be different just for the sake of being different, rather we wanted our wedding to be unique, enjoyable and memorable for my guests and of course for my husband and I. So what better way to inject some magic into a wedding than with an expert magician and illusionist! Meet Alexander, a gentleman and sleight of hand expert. Alexander really wowed all my guests, young and old alike, with close up magic the likes of which you normally only see on TV. Guests were left flabbergasted, in awe and disbelief. There really was magic in the air, so much so that my friends and family are still talking about it to this day! Girls just wanna have funds! Working in our local community as a RESCU Ranger over the last few years has helped reshuffle my priorities in so many ways. I find myself striving to make our mobile clinic as convenient and affordable as possible, with a renewed focus on actual healthcare instead of disease care. This valuable experience initiated my keen interest in fitness and nutrition and even prompted me to earn my Personal Trainer Certification this year and consequently create 3F.energy , a science-based fat loss programme. Speaking of 3F , I've talked about F ashion and F itness on this blog and today, we're going to touch on the third F - Finance. Oh gosh! I can't believe we're going there. As you can imagine, running your own business often means the lack of a regular pay cheque and this has truly humbled me and made me rethink my financial situation to see money in a completely different light and hopefully make less financial mistakes as a result. If you've been a long time reader of this blog (You're a real trouper! Thank you!), you may have noticed that my earlier posts were mostly reviews of luxury goods so you can already imagine the kind of money mindset I had back then as a young fresh grad with a decent pay check - it was all about keeping up with the joneses like many of my peers. The last few years, with my husband's multiple emergency surgeries, the pandemic affecting our business and loved ones' passing, it was all a real wake up call for me. My savings were wiped out within a year but the expenses were still mounting. I had to reassess our situation and make smarter financial decisions. I'm glad to say that after one year of readjusting our lifestyles and mindset, I managed to stabilise our situation and accumulate some savings again. These days it's all about spending our hard earned money on more meaningful experiences and assets that can help us achieve financial freedom one day. Here are some money lessons that I've learnt and I hope it might inspire those of you in a similar predicament right now to get your finances back in order too. 1) Pay yourself first Yes yes. I know you've probably heard this umpteen times but I still need to emphasise on this. The first time I heard this concept was back in 2010 when I read Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad and it was this that prompted me to look at savings accounts with high interest rates, REITs and investment plans. Remember! Paying yourself first doesn't mean you go buy that Gucci bag and the Starbucks coffee first before you save the rest. Instead, it's the other way round where you save first, then buy everything else you need. Each month, allocate some money to your asset column FIRST before you pay for your monthly expenses and buy your favourite things. I definitely do not mean cutting all the fun things out of your budget - that is a miserable thing to have to do. If you made less money or have more fixed expenses that month, then buy less nice things. The concept is pay YOURSELF first, not Gucci first. 2) Keep track of your expenses Easier said than done! Even though I knew this is good practice, I've always been too afraid to see how much I'm actually spending. Heard of the ostrich mentality? Head in the ground and hiding from the truth because ignorance is bliss, yes, that's me - guilty as charged! You'll be surprised how effective this simple habit was for me. Suddenly, I see the light! There were many times where I went off the rails with my spending and by the end of the month, I realised I don't have much to save and wondered where all my money went. These days, I track my spending with a budgeting app called the Monny app where a cute bunny reminds me every night at 11pm to record my expenses. It has worked wonders on my budget and helped me identify all the unnecessary expenses such as subscriptions I no longer use, extra duplicate groceries or clothes that I bought and forgot all about! Sheesh! Well, you don't have to use the Monny app if the interface doesn't speak to you. There are tons of other budget apps out there or you can even consider recording your expenses on a Microsoft Excel Sheet or physical notebook, whatever that floats your boat! The bottom line is JUST DO IT! 3) Set realistic financial goals Studies have shown that the failure rate for New Year's resolutions are about 80 percent, and most lose their resolve by mid-February. I used to set unrealistic financial goals for myself like - I want to save 50k this year or I want to achieve financial freedom before I turn 35! You get the picture - the goal is too big, it lacks clarity and the expectations are set too high. These days, I divide my year into quarters and set quarterly goals instead of yearly ones and on top of that I also set daily goals to move the needle in the right direction. Here's an example, instead of setting a target like saving 10k a year - how about starting with $10 a day, then progress to $20 a day? In this way, the amount will be less intimidating. Save and forget about it, then see the final amount at the end of the year. Trust me, you'll thank yourself for it later. You can set up recurring payments to your respective bank and investment accounts. I personally adopt the Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA) method and create recurring payments to my investment and crypto apps which I'll share more later. FYI! Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) is an investment strategy in which an investor divides up the total amount to be invested across periodic purchases of a target asset in an effort to reduce the impact of volatility on the overall purchase. The purchases occur regardless of the asset's price and at regular intervals. 4) Invest! Beat inflation with investing! Instead of parking my newly acquired savings in the bank which offers very little returns, I've been putting them towards assets I believe will appreciate in the long term. I bought some REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) more than 10 years ago and made some decent passive income over the years. This prompted me to explore other investment opportunities and since I'm a noob investor and have a low risk appetite, I started off using roboadvisors which are like the name suggests "robots" that help you to invest. They are automated, algorithm-driven financial planning services designed to be stress-free, approachable and cost-effective for new investors. I do need to warn you that these roboadvisors are not fool-proof. You're still putting money towards investments after all so you'll lose money if the stocks or ETFs they chose for you don't do well. I've also invested in cryptocurrency and stocks this past year. Just in case you're wondering, here are some of the platforms I'm currently using: Stocks Moomoo Tiger Brokers Roboadvisor Stashaway - Sign up with my link and we'll both get up to $10,000 SGD managed for free for 6 months! Cryptocurrency (Warning: Extremely risky) Gemini - Sign up with my link and we'll each get $10 USD of Bitcoin. Coinhako Again! I need to remind you to use these platforms judiciously. Do your homework before you invest in anything, if not it'll be no different to gambling. 5) Create a passive income stream If you've been following me on RESCU's socials too, you may have realised that we reduced our telemedicine consultation rates earlier this year as we managed to create a new passive income stream for RESCU by renting out half of our current office. Yay! If you have a space, an extra room in your house, a car, they could possibly be money-making assets (yes, even the car) that you can rent out and generate passive income! If owning a property is too far fetched for now, you could buy some REITs instead. A REIT is a corporation that owns, operates, or finances income-producing real estate or real estate-related assets so this means you can earn profits from real estate without the need to own, operate, or directly finance properties. Other ways you can make some passive income include selling a digital product, starting a YouTube channel or simply using your credit card. I've been using my Citibank cards and been receiving some pretty decent cash rewards to help pay for phone bills and groceries. I do need to remind you that interest rates for credit card debts are the highest so don't forget to pay your bills on time to avoid late fees. There are so many more ways to make passive income. Those will be reserved for a whole other post, for another time where I'll go into each of the areas mentioned above in much more detail and connect the dots for you. So this sparked my new year's resolution – save money. I came up with a few easy ways to save money and I thought I could share them here to help you put more money in your back pocket too. Well, girls just wanna have funds! 1) Use money-saving apps such as Save 22 to plan your purchases. This app allows you to compare prices of the same products in different locations by simply scanning their barcodes. Now you can be savvy when you shop! 2) Try samples and freebies! Many big beauty product brands tend to give away free samples on their websites/Facebook pages on a regular basis. Try them before you buy them and you’re well on your way to becoming a smart and informed consumer. 3) Get rewarded for shopping! Cashback shopping schemes are all the rage in the UK and US and recently, that trend has hit our sunny island too. Woo hoo! Introducing to you, Shopback , a coupon website that not only features the best deals in the house but also reward you for shopping at your favorite online stores such as ASOS , Zalora and many more! Simply shop on any store via Shopback , then earn your rebates and cash them out through Paypal or bank transfer to your local bank. My best friend, J, has been using their cashback programme for a while and highly recommends it to all shopaholics. Haha! 4) Say no to taxis! Taxi rides in Singapore cost a bomb – we’re one of the most expensive cities in the world remember? However, we also have one of the most convenient public transit systems in the world so make use of it! If you need help, use transport apps like the Streetdirectory app. It helps you navigate around the city with ease by planning your journey, calculating your transportation fares and even recommending interesting places and eateries that are highly raved by app users and bloggers. 5) Don’t buy magazines! Borrow them instead! Many public libraries house top fashion magazines like Women’s Weekly, CLEO, Seventeen, Vivi, just to name a few.
