It is deemed safe by researchers. However, even though it is not regarded as a carcinogen by OSHA or IARC and has a gentler formula than SLS, you should still use it with caution as like most chemicals, it can still potentially irritate the skin in some people. Hence, instead of the 3 minutes recommended, I only left the soap on my face for 1.5 minutes in case it dried my sensitive skin out. Afterthoughts… I tried the soap on my hand first and it left my skin squeaky clean. This is why I decided to half the recommended leave-on time from 3 minutes to 1.5 minutes. I had a huge pimple on my chin at the time and guess what happened the following day? The angry looking zit dried up and my pores also appeared a wee bit smaller than the day before. I thought it is pretty miraculous since my zits usually take a longer time to recover so I must say, I was rather impressed with its supersonic healing abilities. Its texture is very hard actually so it was quite a challenge to get a good lather. But I love its odourless formulation that is great for my sensitive skin. My skincare products also glided on better afterwards. I’ve read online that many experienced breakouts in the first few days but it didn’t happen to me. I guess it may be due to the shorter application time. If you’re afraid of a pimple attack, you could probably do the same too. We’re officially 70 days away from the biggest event of my life and I’m still 3kg away from my ideal weight. Urgh! I know it might not sound like a huge slimming goal but these 3kgs are as stubborn as an ox. They just won’t go away. Many have suggested that I work juice cleansing or tea detoxing into my diet and I should see results sooner than I can say 3kg! I reckon those are short term plans as you’re only consuming fluids. Generally, the milkshakes contain a good balance of vitamins BUT! They each also contain a level of sugar that is equivalent to half a can of coke. :O So in spite of its low calorie content, I was still sceptical of incorporating this product into my diet for a long time. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying it doesn’t work. It did help me lose 1kg in a week but I also  notice tummy bloating and carb cravings symptoms when I was on it. If you’re going for the low-calorie route of slimming, this will be the ideal superfood for you. But I have to warn you, the results are only sustainable if you keep everything else low calorie too. The only saving grace is – you can still have your rice, bread and occasional desserts! For me, I prefer the low sugar route as I’ve a family history of diabetes and a low sugar diet has helped me drop the pounds most quickly without starvation. So I guess the ORBIS Petit Shake will be ideal as a weekly sweet snack for me and not as a long term solution to weight loss. How many of you ladies have at one point or another wanted to lose weight? I imagine a fair few of you. How many of you have tried low fat, low calorie diets to perhaps lose some weight but then still find yourself looking flabby when you look at yourself in the mirror? Well that’s why I’m here to tell you that if you want to be healthier and slimmer then your aim shouldn’t be to lose weight but to lose fat! Traditional low fat and low calorie diets put your body into a starvation mode. You lose weight by burning away your muscle while you body clings onto your fats. That’s why you may seem to be losing weight but not fats. This is the kind of weight loss you can typically expect on fruit cleanse diets and other carb heavy diets. We now know pretty conclusively that these low calorie diets simply do not work and are generally unsustainable. So what’s the solution? Eat fat!!! Yes, you heard me right! Eat fat. Celebrities, actors and body builders have been using this biohack to lose weight easily and stay in shape for years. The key is to eliminate carbs from your diet. What are carbs? Carbs are foods like rice, bread, noodles, pasta, potatoes and anything made from flour as well as sweet foods. These foods are converted to glucose (sugar) in the body to be used as energy. So as far as your body is concerned, eating these foods is just the same as eating sugar. It gives you energy, but if you eat more than you need (and everyone does), the rest is converted to triglycerides (fats) and stored by the body. Hence eating carbs can make you fat. If you eliminate carbs from your diet, your body will use up its sugar stores and start looking for an alternative fuel source. That’s right, you guessed it, your body starts turning those stored fats into something called ketone bodies, which it can use for fuel and energy more efficiently than even sugar. Remove carbs from you diet, eat healthy fats and proteins, and your body will make this switch over to fat burning mode called ketosis. This is the essence for what is known as the ketogenic diet. Sure you may feel tired for a few days, but get over that initial induction period and you will start to lose fat, feel less mental fog and sleepiness after eating, feel energized and just generally become a better you! So surprisingly, eating meats, butter, fish, eggs, natural foods, allow you to lose fat. Or perhaps it is not surprising; after all, this is what our cavemen ancestors were doing for thousands of years. It is only in recent years with diets high in refined carbohydrates that diabetes, heart disease and obesity levels have started reaching epidemic proportions. Our bodies just can’t handle so much sugar. Some of you may be concerned that eating such fatty foods will give you high cholesterol. Well you’d be partly right. Eating saturated fats like those found in red meats and butter actually increases you HDL good cholesterol as well the larger safer LDL type of cholesterol particles (cholesterol particle size measurement is something which is yet to be practiced in Singapore but is common place in the west). Eating carbs promotes the formation of the smaller more harmful LDL particles, which are more likely to clot leading to heart disease and blocked arteries. In fact, fats and proteins actually satisfy hunger much more than carbs do, so you may find yourself not feeling hungry for long periods at a time. In this way you may even end up eating less. Are there any side effects? Well, it does make you more sensitive to things and some people have reported sensitive skin reactions like rashes while on the diet, but these people are usually few and far between. So there you have it. Fat does not make you fat. Carbs do! Remove carbs from your diet and you will go into fat burning mode, lose fat, reduce diabetes and heart disease risk and possibly even reduce cancer risk by reducing carb induced inflammation. Do not be surprised if your doctor sounds alarmed at the sound of a high fat and protein diet. Traditional doctors who may not be familiar with the latest literature on ketogenic and paleo diets will likely not be able to help you. You may need to source a doctor experienced in ketogenic theory or review the various sources of information available online. There are plenty of websites and even YouTube videos that you can see for further advice. Finally, you can stop counting calories, you can eat those steaks, lamb chops, eggs, burger patties, roast chicken drumsticks, all guilt free and still lose weight. Because to dye the hair, ammonia has to open the hair shaft pores to allow the color to penetrate and bond with the hair. Not surprisingly, this is a very mane-mangling process so William suggested a full hair treatment to reverse its harmful effects. Here’s Alvina, my colourist and treatment therapist for the day. 🙂 Shunji Matsuo is a huge supporter of Shiseido’s hair care range which is known for its ability to restore the hair’s original lustre and prevent further damage. Alvina washed the dye away before spreading some scalp care gel on my head. Whoopee! And my crowning glory gets some serious massage. This is not only relaxing but also stimulates hair growth. And then she washes the treatment products away with Aveda’s Rosemary Mint shampoo which was absolutely invigorating for the scalp and mind. 😛 Next, she applied more treatment products to my hair and steamed it for a few minutes. My treatment culminated with another relaxing shoulder and head massage. Woo hoo! The ultra soft and moist texture of my hair shocked me. As mentioned, hair colouring always challenges the health of your hair so it is important to make sure you include a hair treatment that’s infused with a luxurious blend of moisture-rich ingredients. Abracadabra! It was really easy for William to style it too. My hair is now soft, shiny and in control. Since my hair was repeatedly bleached, it wasn’t long before the hair ends started to show signs of detriment. One treatment is not enough! This was taken a month and a half later. I need another treatment! Since I was also prepping for my third wedding shoot, William decided to give my hair a total color transformation to liven it up. It is pretty amazing because this time, flaking was minimal and my hair stayed silky and healthy for a long time. They say ‘loose lips sink ships’, I say ‘chapped lips sink everything’! Unlike our skin, our lips do not have oil and sweat glands to keep them moist and to add fuel to the fire, they are also thinner than the skin on our face, hence, our lips are more vulnerable to chapping and sun damage. So it is important to care and protect our lips to keep our pout in the best condition! Trust me, applying skin-saving concoctions and gulping down glasses of water is not enough. To maintain your smooth luscious lips, you’ll need to put in more effort. I’ve come up with a list of lip hacks to help you pay more than just lip service to your dry lip woes. 😛 Now let’s step up our lip game with these easy measures! Guess what I’m going to do with this tub of sugar. 😛 If you’ve guessed ‘exfoliate’… Well, spot on my friend! 1) Exfoliate! Like our skin, exfoliating the lips can remove the dry, dead skin covering the soft lips underneath. Regular scrubs can keep your lips smooth, fresh and plump. Create a sugar-based scrub by mixing sugar and olive oil, then gently massage your lips with the scrub. This will also help to increase the circulation of blood to your lips and make them look smooth and red. 2) Hydrate! Hydrate lips by applying a lip balm. Well, not just any lip balm. As mentioned earlier, the skin on our lips are thinner so the sun can easily rob our lips of any spare moisture and eventually lead to photo-aging. So remember to hydrate them with a lip balm that provides sun protection. LJH’s Cellabel Lip Treatment SPF15 is my go-to sun protector for my lips. It contains natural ingredients and Vitamin E to keep my lips moisturised for hours after application while protecting it from awful sun rays or other environmental triggers like dry air and and cold winds. Now that our lips are no longer dry and flaky, it’s time to dress them up! We love our lipsticks but how do we make sure they stay put for hours? 3) The Loose Powder Trick First, layer your lips with lipstick. Then hold one ply of tissue against your lips and dust them with some loose powder. Finish off with another layer of lipstick. Repeat this at least 3 times and your lipstick will last a lifetime. 😛 URGH! Lip stains! This is another common problem that lipstick wearers dread. So keep lip stains off teeth with… 4) The rolled tissue trick Roll a tissue and put it in your mouth to create an O shape on your lips. Make sure there are no spaces between the tissue and your mouth. Thereafter, slide the tissue out of your mouth. This will remove lipstick on your inner lips that may potentially bleed and stain your teeth. Prolonged exposure to sun rays and constant use of straws can result in unsightly wrinkles. Even though it is impossible to get rid of them in a jiffy, we can certainly still hide them with makeup. 5) Use clear lip gloss! Create the illusion of lush and plump lips with the help of colourless lip gloss. They mask wrinkles effectively without bringing the attention away from the lip color. My favorite is this white pearl gloss from Esyoro . It provides a beautiful shine while yummifying my lips with its sweet aroma. Lastly, keep lips moist and supple with lip-friendly foods like fruits and vegetables. Avoid spicy and salty food that may inflame and damage our lips. Also, our thin lip skin do not handle the hot sensation from hot drinks and soups well so make sure your fluids are not piping hot when you consume them. The rule of thumb is to treat your lips like you would your face and you should have kiss-ready lips in no time. Now pucker up! Eh wait… My lip woes are not over. I woke up today all excited to pen a new ‘Beauty Hack’ post but that excitement was taken away by the devastating news of comic legend, Joan Rivers’ passing. Even though we knew that she’s been on life support for days, I was still hopeful that she’ll recover from this medical ordeal. Hi belles! I’m Petite Amie and today, I’m going to forget about my couture gown, perfectly preened fur and… gulp, fear of water. Yup. Like most bunnies, water gets me all the time. I literally hop away for dear life whenever I see running water. But I’m going to disregard my aquaphobia and focus on a bigger issue – raising awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Motor Neurone Disease. ALS is the same disease that has plagued Professor Stephen Hawking for more than 50 years. The disease affects the brain and the spinal cord causing motor neurones to degenerate and die, leading to gradual paralysis and eventually death. As of today, there is no known cure. The funds raised by the ALS Association (US), Motor Neurone Association (UK) and other charities will go towards vital research.
