Whee! I don’t have to wreak havoc in my kitchen by making my own natural lip balm now. Chucking organic talk aside, can these organic lip balms still measure up to their non-organic counterparts? Here’s what I think… The organic lip balm provided quick relief from my dry and chapped lips. My lips felt hydrated immediately after application. The lip balm also left a healthy sheen on my lips making them look luscious, silky and velvety smooth. I was rather amazed that the lip balm stayed on even after 30 minutes! My lips looked like they were shining with gloss and they felt pretty moisturized. Most lip balms will dry out shortly after application and require me to reapply constantly. I heard this could also be an allergic reaction to the balm. *jeers* The texture of the product also felt soft and incredibly smooth on lips, especially the Raspberry and Strawberry flavor. It goes on soft and smooth and exudes a sweet smelling aroma that lasts for several minutes. Compared to Raspberry and Strawberry, the Lavender and Orange flavor lip balm has a rougher texture. But that does not bother me as it oozes a subtle lavender scent that is very relaxing and soothing when inhaled. Lavender is always well known for its calming and healing attributes so this flavor really wins me over. To be honest, I did get a surge of scepticism when I first learned of the Organic lip balm. I was not confident that this organic baby can produce the same results as ordinary lip balm. Well, it did and even exceeded my expectations and stood up to all the regular lip balms. I also wore the lip balm under my lip stick and the color stayed on longer than usual and feathering was reduced. The only downer is that the lip balms do not contain SPF. Whenever I think about pimples and exfoliation, I think of oil and water. They don’t get along, period. Why? Because the seeds in scrubs usually irritates acne-prone skin and aggravates the acne condition. More harm than good I say. But!!! Without exfoliation, our faces will be covered in layers of dead skin cells as cells move from the base of the skin to the surface every 30 days where they ‘rest in peace’ eventually. If you don’t slough them off, it’ll be difficult for beauty products to work well on you. This is because the products will have to work their way through the layers of dead skin cells to get to the top layer of your skin. In the long term, your skin will become dull and clogged by sebum. So to ensure that your beauty lotions don’t work too hard, you’ll have to exfoliate to get rid of dead skin cells! Now that we know that regular exfoliation reveals smooth and glowing skin, how do we do it then? Especially when skin is oily and acne-prone too? Well, your best bet is to use a less abrasive facial scrub like Mentholatum’s Acnes Facial Scrub! What I think about the product… First, here’s a brief of my complexion. I have very oily skin – it is pretty much like an oil rig. Most of the time, I look like I dunked my face in a bucket of oil. So facial creams and oil blotting papers are my best-est friends. To add to the problem, most facial creams for oily skin are too harsh for my skin, in that they usually strip my skin of it’s natural oils and leave a dry and uncomfortable feeling on my skin after washing. As such, I’m always on the search for facial cleansers that leave a refreshed and clean feeling. And this facial wash delivered just that. After washing, my skin felt clean and soft with a nice lingering menthol smell on my face. Even though my skin felt slightly tight, it was not uncomfortable. After applying a thin coat of moisturizer, the tight feeling went away immediately. That is usually not the case with other facial scrubs where tightness on the face goes away only when the oil glands produce natural oils. Most scrubs also leave red blotches on my face as my skin is incredibly sensitive and turns red very easily. Furthermore, I’m not a fan of beauty products with Salicylic Acid as they leave an uncomfortable stinging sensation on my face. However, the facial scrub worked pretty well on me despite having the ‘killer’, Salicylic Acid in its contents. No redness after wash. The effects of the acid were probably overridden by the calming properties of the aloe vera and cucumber in the face cream. The texture of the scrub felt grainy but did not feel rough on my skin. As I rubbed the sandy scrub all over my face, it felt almost like a face massage – soothing and relaxing. For SGD7.50, you get a hefty 100g tube of Acnes Facial scrub. Quite a bargain. All in all, it wins for its affordable price, cooling effect, fine anti-acne beads and non-drying properties. I award it 4.5 Honeyz crowns! 0.5 crowns for the slight tight feeling after wash. “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” Walt Disney I first explored the idea of a mobile medical service with B many years ago when granny had to go to the A&E in the middle of the night because she wasn’t feeling very well. Since granny has a weak immune system, we were worried about how she might be affected by the potentially long waiting time and exposure to other bugs and viruses in the hospital. The entire family rushed to the scene and the tension was definitely brewing in the air as the night went on, especially as they only allowed two family members to accompany her at a time, the rest were outside waiting nervously for any news or updates. It turned out to be nothing. (Thank God!) This sparked the convo about the convenience of doctors visiting patients’ homes. B said while working in our polyclinics, he’s always been surprised that very elderly and frail patients need to make their way down to the clinic for their regular checkups or for minor health issues when they could easily be treated at home via a house call doctor like they are in the UK. We talked about how helpful it would be if doctors could do the same here, the doctor could treat you at home and at the same time also check what medicines patients have at home so they don’t have to buy more if they don’t need to. I’m not a doctor but I’ve definitely been a patient many times and a worried family member of a patient. Working with B, I hope I’ve been able to create something which can really make things easier for everyone. When I’m sick, the last thing I want to do is spend my entire day in a clinic, waiting for my turn to see the doctor. Eek! You’ll be happy to know that Philosophy’s new range is indeed a buncha hard workers as they are developed with an all-new full-light spectrum level of protection that raises the bar on sun protection in the industry beyond UVA and UVB protection to cover infrared rays and even visible light. They do this by introducing multi-protection technology. Okay, this is going to get a wee bit technical.  The system merges a patented antioxidant complex made of five highly efficient naturally derived ingredients (angelica, bitter orange peel, pongamia, green coffee and green tea) combined with Vitamin C and E with infrared red and visible light reflectors (Ruby powder, titanium dioxide-covered mica) along with broad broad spectrum UVA and UVB filters. Erm… that’s not all. This multi-protection complex is then integrated with their multi-rejuvenation complex which includes patented bi-retinoid and active plant cells from the iris flower to help improve the synthesis of collagen and rejuvenate the skin’s appearance layer by layer. Told ya these miracle workers were trying to cover all grounds. According to the results of a clinical study they conducted last year, 33 women aged 44-65 reported that their skin’s hydration levels increased by 73% after just one use! And now, here’s a quick rundown of Philosophy’s Miracle Worker products. 🙂 Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Eye SPF 15 (SGD90, 15ml) Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Lightweight Emulsion SPF 25 (SGD100, 45ml) Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Cream SPF 25 (SGD100, 60ml) Afterthoughts… I haven’t started using the eye cream as I recently developed a Chalazion in my upper eye lid, hence I’m avoiding all eye products until I get better. However, I did try the emulsion and cream. Well, I literally gave both a go at the same time . Bad move as I developed a slight reaction to the products. My face was all red and itchy like I had a heat rash. I didn’t realize it’s an ‘either or’ kind of situation where you can only use one product at a time. I always thought emulsions are serums that you use after your toner and before your moisturizer. Evidently, I was wrong. After some probing on the internet, I realized that emulsions are like an alternative to cream moisturizers for use when you want a lighter formula or if you’ve oilier skin. I’ve very sensitive combination dry skin so no wonder my skin reacted so ferociously to the products the first time. I was drowning it in rich moisturizers! Since I started using them separately, they’ve been the best skincare products I’ve ever tried. In terms of application, I’ll use the cream version when I’m home where the atmosphere is drier thanks to air-conditioning. When I’m out and about, I’ll switch to the emulsion since I tend to sweat more in our warm climate. The lightweight formula also makes it a perfect base for my makeup. Heretofore, my skin would still feel tight and dry even after applying moisturizers but these days, after using the miracle workers, it actually feels softer and more hydrated all day long. Yay! Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Night (SGD120, 60ml) This is an interesting product as it is the beauty world’s first serum-in-cream formula with bi-retinoid (hpr+) and active plant cells from the iris flower. It combines the concentrated power of a serum with the nourishing benefits of a cream to help stimulate skin regeneration, while helping your skin rebuild its natural collagen levels. What makes this so fascinating are these pearls within which the formula is packaged individually to maintain the freshness of the product. The pearls contain the serum made from the active plant cells mentioned above and the encapsulation protects the active ingredients until first use, allowing maximum skin performance. Amazing, isn’t it? Now let’s get down to business! After some twirling and swirling with my spatula, the pearls dissolved into the cream forming this light pink formula. It smells sweeter too! It might be the iris flower at work. It’s a flower after all. 😛 Honestly, with the jar packaging, I’m not sure if we’re getting the biggest bang for our buck as anti-aging ingredients tend to be become unstable in the presence of light and air, therefore degrading its beneficial properties. This literally means the whole purpose of encapsulating the active agents is very much null and void once we open the jar. I wish it came with a pump like the emulsion instead. Don’t forget the bacteria we introduce into the cream, everytime we dunk our fingers or spatular into it. As for the product itself, I actually love how fast absorbing it is. My skin actually feels less flaky after the first use. No major breakouts either. Phew! I’m actually looking forward to using this for a longer time to see more prominent results. Hurray to more youthful skin! Just a bit of work on the packaging and this would be perfect. 🙂 Where to get them?
