As a new season approaches, I put away last season’s favorites to make way for new fashion delights for my already exploding wardrobe. And this applies to my trusty Macbook too. Hey MB, check out your new clothes! My laptop (MacBook Pro 13″) is my bestest friend. My entire life practically depends on it, from work, to surf and play, to shopping and most importantly to Facebooking! So I make sure I give my best friend the best by giving ‘her’ (yes, it’s a she) the most fashionable protection. Haha! A few months ago, I was shopping in Harajuku, Tokyo when I spotted a sleek white building with the logo ‘Marc by Marc Jacobs’ on it. I squealed before dashing into this five year old store of the global fashion brand. Here’s a brief history of Marc by Marc Jacobs (MBMJ). Introduced in the spring of 2001, Marc by Marc Jacobs is the diffusion line of Marc Jacobs that produces avant-garde fashion designs that retail at lower pricelines. And it was there that I spotted this nifty laptop bag at 13,000 Yen (SGD207) from their Spring-Summer 2012 collection. So I swiftly brought it home! Please allow me to walk you through its cool features. The nylon laptop case is stylishly decorated with Marc Jacobs signature quilting and riveted with an exquisite heritage logo plate. The laptop bag came with a soft and lightweight dust bag as shown below. Even though its zipper is not the smoothest I’ve tried, its edgy design still wins me over. There are two ways to wear the bag. You can either hold the fabric handles or use the detachable and adjustable crossbody strap. The fabric strap drop length is 5”. The length of the shoulder strap drop is 11″ to 22″. This is how the bag looks like on my 161cm (approximately 5’3 feet) frame. Back to the features… I like that the stylish harness clip does not require a lot of force to put on and take off which made it very nail-friendly. The bag also came with a foam pad to maintain the shape of the bag. The interior of the computer case is my most favorite feature. It is lined with faux fur and protective microfiber that is very comfortable to touch. 🙂 The dimensions of the bag are 13″W x 10″H x 2″D so my 13” Macbook fits snugly inside the bag. Besides the Macbook, I reckon most 13-inch laptops will also fit comfortably. I found this photo rather hoodwinking as the bag can definitely contain more than a Macbook. I’d stuffed it with one magazine, one Macbook, one external hard disk and an Apple magic mouse and I could still zip the bag with ease. 🙂 However, to ensure a longer lifespan of the bag, I don’t encourage you to do this often. 😛 The bag provides a convenient exterior velcro pocket for my mouse, gadgets and paraphernalia. Frankly, this was a rather impulsive buy. Before this purchase, my Macbook was already comfortably dressed in Fabrix , but I couldn’t resist the colorful bright prints and the cool logo plaque of this MBMJ bag. The sewing and seams were reasonably well-constructed. Only one loose thread spotted. The only drawback is the fact that the fabric is prone to dirt. Otherwise, I think it was totally worth purging my Fabrix case for this Marc Jacobs darling. Psst! I checked out the MBMJ store at Takashimaya recently and a MBMJ sales assistant told me that the bag was sold within a few weeks of launch. But don’t fret. I spotted other Tapioca Multi cosmetic cases and handbags. MBMJ has also launched more laptop bags for their fall collection, albeit with the same specifications as the Tapioca Multi, they looked edgier and classier. You can check them out here . To sum it up… A fashionable computer bag that protects my technology with elegant plush lining and also a stylish and convenient companion for my globetrotting adventures. 4.5 Honeyz crowns! Haha! I felt like a celebrity! I entered their premises and was immediately overwhelmed by the hundreds of nail polish colors at their reception. I’m super into interior design right now, and I’m all for Edwardian decor and intricate Victorian details. So I can’t help but notice that they did not use the traditional chandelier for their Edwardian theme. Instead, they opted for a planet-like lamp as the room’s centerpiece. Very creative. The overall look was refreshing and very welcoming. Then I was promptly ushered to my seat for my nail treatment. I sat beside Samantha (a regular Nail Space customer) whom I thought had a really nice pair of legs and a set of gorgeous toe nails. Don’t get me wrong. I do not have a feet fetish. But she did have nice toes and nails. See for yourself! At this juncture, I noticed that the Nail Space nail technician was decorating Samantha’s toe nails with beautifully drawn flowers. She was like a Nail Picasso! Check out the “canvas”! No photos of Samantha as she was very shy so more photos of her tootsies and nails! The final product! Incredible skills. Now you know where to go for hand drawn nail art! Nail Space has many nail art catalogues like the one shown below and I was asked to choose my favorite nail design from one of them. While I was trying to rack my brains to decide the design I want, I noticed Jean’s gorgeous french jeweled nails. And I immediately made my decision. 🙂 Now let’s get down to work! Winnie (my nail magician for the afternoon) carefully removed my ‘pink and pearls’. Winnie applied acetone on my nails with a cotton pad then wrapped my fingers with tin foil. Alien fingers! Cut, file, buff! Nail and Hand Harmony’s Gelish ‘Black Shadow’ was used for the tip. Then my nails were sent to the LED Lamp (aka oven) for curing. This will dry the gel polish within seconds without smudging. Winnie added gelish color ‘Water Field’ for the glittery effect. Winnie thought my nails weren’t glittery enough so she went all out and sprinkled bigger glitters for a disco ball effect. And after some curing… Tadah! Winnie was such a perfectionist. During the filing and trimming, she made sure that every detail was taken care of – cuticles were pushed back, peeling skin were removed and nails tips were shaped neatly. She also applied several coats of polish to ensure a long lasting finish. Even though the session took longer than usual, I was thankful that nothing was overlooked as my nails looked perfect afterwards! Afterthoughts… I always had the impression that black polish is a nail fashion faux pas. Somehow, I thought they might make nails appear shorter and stouter or look too spunky on our dainty fingers. Well, I guess I was wrong. Black nail polish can create more flattering proportions. My nails did not look shorter, instead they looked elegantly longer. Thank you Nail Space for the wonderful service and ‘nail color enlightenment’. Haha! All in all, I love the friendly atmosphere and cozy environment of the salon. I’m an advocator of organic beauty products (click here to find out why) and organic facials in Singapore are as rare as the golden fleece from Greek mythology. So I was exhilarated to try this new treatment. Of course, an organic facial treatment wouldn’t be complete without organic beauty products. These photos did not do it justice as the room was actually nicely decorated with low candle flames from candle votives and ceiling drapes which I didn’t manage to capture on my camera. And my treatment began with cleansing and a warm towel wrapped around my face… … like this. I know I look like one of the aliens from Prometheus now but trust me, this was the best part of the treatment. The warm wrap created a soothing and comforting effect which subsequently helped to relax and calm my mind and body. Good hydration helps to preserve the skin’s elasticity and softness so the beauty therapist conducted a hydration test with this pen-like tool to check the hydration level of my skin. Well, she concluded that my skin needs to be hydrated as much as possible so here we go with a “hydration-centric” facial treatment. Good stress management also improves skin condition so the beauty therapist began with a chest, neck and face massage with these wet icy cool tools to calm nerves and relax the stress away. Then a 20-minute mask with Babor’s Baborganic products. After she removed the mask, she culminated the treatment with a head massage using a towel. Aaaah.. heavenly. Envious? Don’t be! The spiral staircase leads to the manicure section of the salon. The cuticles and nail plates on my feet have been neglected for a while so I thought this is a great opportunity to trim those unkempt nails. Don’t look if you’re the squeamish sort! The nail technician commented that my legs look rather dry and gave them a leg spa! The Streetdirectory.com crew took photos of Grace (who was in the spa marathon too) and me… … and my ugly feet. Here’s why this is important: 1) It allows you to add your favorite points-of-interest so that you can always keep track of their latest happenings. Each business page contains practical information such as opening hours, address, contact details, price range, and a built-in map application. 2) With a Streetdirectory.com account, you’ll also be able to post latest reviews (known as Tips in Streetdirectory language) of places that you’ve visited. Each tip you share entitles you to reward points that you can use to redeem attractive prizes from Streetdirectory.com! Here’s more. The top poster (with the most points) will also get to win SGD1,000 in cash every month ! Woohoo! This is how your post will look like on the Tips page. Since I turned on the ‘Share to Facebook’ button, my review was also posted directly to my FB page. Besides reviews on restaurants and salons, several altruistic posters have also provided traffic news. These posters supply information on traffic accidents such as their time and exact locations. It is almost like a live traffic feed! All thanks to this feature, I’ve avoided several major traffic jams on motorways. To locate the exact spot of the accident, simply pinch to zoom in and out of the map. The detailed street maps are fully retooled for the iPhone with location awareness and multi-touch controls. Here comes my most favorite feature of the Streetdirectory.com app. The ‘Nearby’ feature. This feature gives you access to information on businesses that are near you at the moment. This is great for ‘explorers’ like me who constantly need to dine at a new eatery or explore new shopping avenues. Here’s how it works. I tried locating salons that were nearby and the following screen appeared. So I clicked on Mary Chia salon and was brought to the map and subsequently, her business page. My favorite category of the ‘Nearby’ feature is the 24 Hours Business where I can locate the nearest convenience stores and locksmith services. This is useful information for possible emergencies. You can choose the preferred distance of the business within your vicinity. The app also allows you to share this useful navigation information with your family and friends by simply clicking the ‘Send’ button. You’ll also get to calculate the costs for different modes of transport and the amount of time needed to get to your preferred destination! How cool is that?! Psst! When the info is all laid out like that, it will also help you to solve all internal debates on whether “money or time” is more important. Haha! To top it off… If you’re taking public transport, the app also displays information on bus services and their arrival times! Haha. This is a fantastic app I tell you. No more poor journey planning and perplexing maps. Streetdirectory.com wraps up all the functions of famous apps such as Iris, Google Maps and Taxi Lah in an intuitive and easy to use app where everything is only a few touches away. It also plays the role of a mini travel guidebook that gives you the latest reviews on shopping, restaurants and places of interest! I’ve also downloaded it onto my iPad! Android users, you’re not left out! The app is also available for your phones! I downloaded the app onto my friend’s Samsung Nexus and this is how it looks on an Android phone. Well, here’s the bad news… On the day of the treatment, I was informed by Happybox that their signature massage service was not available. But the better news was, Clover by the Spa has offered to let me choose any treatment on their spa menu as a compensatory gesture of goodwill. Yes, any treatment which includes services that are not in the Happybox menu! Moved by their good service, I happily agreed to the offer and chose the GSD PTF Permanent Laser Hair Removal for full legs (Originally priced at SGD280). So here I am at Clover by the Spa at The Central at Clarke Quay. Upon arrival, I was served a nice hot cup of tea by Jas and Kenneth of Clover by the Spa. While sipping tea, I explored the salon. The interior of the salon was styled in Edwardian with modern chandeliers and sleek European furnishings (my fave!). Then I was ushered into the room by Jas, the owner of Clover by the Spa. The dimly lit room smelled sweetly of flowers with faint strains of Chinese classical music in the background. The spacious room also has convenient shower facilities so customers don’t have to go into another room to take a shower after treatments. Finally, please allow me to introduce to you – the ‘wonder maker’. This is the GSD PTF machine and it is mostly found in dermatologists and skin clinics. It supercedes the traditional laser IPL commonly used in beauty salons in that the intensity and treatment mode is specially catered to the individual’s skin condition. I lay on the bed as Jas removed the sunblock on my legs before the treatment began proper. Laser treatments are well known to be highly effective and… … PAINFUL! So I was extremely nervous before my treatment. No kidding, you should have seen the sweaty palms. Jas assured me that she would take care of me and we chatted before the treatment to distract me from my nerves. Well, the beautiful chandelier and cottage interior also eased the nerves a little. Before the treatment began, I was told to wear eye protection to protect my eyes from the laser beams. And here goes! Jas gently blast the laser on my leg to destroy the hair follicles. The treatment felt surprisingly okay and the light burning sensation on my skin was bearable too. The strength of the laser beam is given on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 5 (the highest). Of course the “pain scale” has a direct relationship with the strength scale. So throughout the treatment, Jas alternated between 2 and 3 for my legs. Any higher would be too much for my poor legs to bear. Jas periodically checked if I was okay or if I needed to lower the strength of the beam (so I knew I was in good hands). The laser treatment ended after a mere 30 minutes and I was served another nice cup of tea. Just when I thought this was the end of my Happybox experience, Jas gave me some Dermalogica products for my cousin and me to try! Yes, you read it right for my cousin too. Let me explain… During one of the ‘distraction’ conversations, I mentioned that my cousin is a huge fan of Dermalogica and has been using their products for ages. Jas remembered this and gave me these before I left. How thoughtful. 😀 And I know you belles can’t wait to see the results. Here are some ‘before and after’ photos of the hair on my legs. On the thighs Before After On the knees Before This photo was taken immediately after the treatment, and the hair ends on my knee curled slightly due to the heat of the laser. After Curled hair fell off and hair on legs became finer. Even though the hair on my legs are not totally eradicated, I am happy with the results of the first treatment. I believe with multiple treatments, I’ll be able to achieve smooth and hairless legs. All in all, I had a great experience at Clover by the Spa. I love the French theme of the salon, the effectiveness of the treatment and the excellent service. Psst! Jas texted me an hour after the treatment to thank me for my visit and support and a few days later, texted again to ask if the hair on my leg has fallen off. The bold stripes has definitely gave my boring wardrobe a little kick. The cut and design makes it easy to style up with colorful bags and shoes that are great for an evening night out with the girls or that hot date. 🙂 My favorite feature is the slightly puffed sleeves which gives off a swanky 80s look. However, its length might not be ideal for the office if you’re standing at 165cm and above. For the rest of us petite girls, the length of the dress (four fingers above the knees) ideally elongates our legs to create the illusion of slender legs. The material is thick and weighty so this means it can withstand multiple washes. However, the texture of the fabric is on the rough side so it might not be the most comfortable to wear on a sunny day. The craftsmanship is excellent with neatly and beautifully sewn side pockets and pleats. All in all, I thought the dress is the quintessence of an understated style and sophistication at a reasonable price point. So 4 Honeyz crowns! Model I found this message on the tag of this dress.
