  • Foundation Review: L’Oreal True Match Foundation

As the IT-girl of the 21st century, the Honeyz Belle constantly exudes confidence and display her innate capability to nail the perfect look for every occasion. Personally, I think having awe-inspiring skin is the first step to becoming this next IT-girl. I guess that doesn’t come as a huge surprise as you’ll notice that the people you first meet usually gaze at your face before they ‘scrutinize’ the rest of your body, i.e. Outfit, accessories, etc. and impressions are imprinted from there. However, perfecting the complexion has always been a very challenging terrain for most girls. So, the solution to instant perfect skin? The foundation. The term ‘foundation’ in makeup isn’t all vain talk. Webster defined ‘foundation’ as a basis upon which something stands or is supported. Well yes. In make up language, it literally forms the base of your entire make up. Your make up ‘falls apart’ when your ‘foundation’ is not up to mark. And this brings me to my second Honeyz Foundation Review. This time, I’m going to review the L’Oreal True Match Foundation. I’ve used many liquid foundations before and so far only this one kept me loyal. I have an olive toned complexion, hence the yellowish undertones of the G3, Golden Beige of this foundation blends into my skin pretty well and it does not create the bi-colour effect between the neck and the face. Also, I usually look pasty in photos. The foundation adds radiance to my face and makes me look much healthier in pictures. Just thought you might be interested… I wore the True Match foundation for the recent Honeyz Fashion Review Shoots and I like the natural and glowing look that it created! In this part of the world (referring to Southeast Asia), the foundation comes with a pump. I understand that the foundation comes in a bottle in many U.S. States. Anyway, back to the pump. I dread using foundations from bottles as it’s difficult to regulate the amount of liquid foundation that flows from the bottle and it creates an atrocious mess afterwards. The pump solves this problem. So thumbs up to that! Here’s another gaping fact about the foundation. It is extremely waterproofed. My good friend, Claudia, swears by this. Claudia and I We were in Bintan, Indonesia recently for a beach getaway. On one occasion, we decided to test the waterproof properties of our make up. Some of us were using Dior, Revlon and L’Oreal Two Way Cake and Claudia used the L’Oreal True Match Foundation for the experiment. So after 2 hours of soaking in a chlorinated pool, Claudia was the only one who still had her make up stubbornly on. The blusher on the apples of her cheeks were still highly visible! (Yup, they stayed on like super glue.) So there you go! True Match’s adhesive and water resistant properties proven! I also noticed shimmers in the foundation when it’s in the bottle, like tiny golden glitters. But when applied, they disappear. Less concentrated I guess. I slathered on some foundation for your reference. So no worries, it does not create the glittery effect on face. It’s still suitable for everyday use. The glitter is probably the True Match Foudation’s secret to its blendable properties. Coverage wise, it’s light to medium. I thought it fails on the coverage part. My blemishes and freckles are still pretty visible after application. It also has a rather short lifespan. It usually lasts 3 hours on my oily complexion. And then poof! It disappears and you have to re-apply again. In a way, I feel like Cinderella’ when I wear it as I have to remind myself to touch up the make up when the ‘optimal time frame’ is up. In addition, I experience mild breakouts from using this foundation at times. This is weird as it claims to be non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic. 🙁 I’m wearing the L’Oreal True Match Foundation in G3, Golden Beige in this picture. This picture was not enhanced in anyway. So this is how the foundation looks like under natural sunlight. It retails at Watsons at SGD 30.90. Overall, I would give this baby an 8 out of 10. Despite some of the negative factors pointed out, I can’t deny that this is an absolute godsend. No foundation feels more like second skin than this one. Moreover, this foundation had tide me over countless meetings, dates, photo shoots and dinner functions. 🙂 Ok. It’s time to serve the dessert of this post – Make up tips for liquid foundations! If you have an oily complexion, you may want to consider purchasing liquid foundations that are a shade lighter than your skin. This is because the foundation tends to turn a shade darker once it mixes with the skin’s natural oils. For the most natural look, try to match your foundation to your neck. You may perform a foundation test by first swiping on three different shades (a light, medium, and dark one for comparison) from the top of the jawline down to the neck. The one that disappears into the skin and matches the neck most closely is the one for you. Avoid foundations that have pinkish tones. They almost always look unnatural and masklike, calling attention to the fact that your neck and face are not the same shade. Instead, find a foundation with a yellowish undertone which will help to balance out any redness in the face. Use less foundation. Most people create an opaque veil of mismatched color when they slap on too much foundation. Use tinted moisturizers instead. Brighten up with some bronzer and blush if you think your foundation is too sheer to your liking. Alrighty. That’s all for this L’Oreal True Match Foundation review post. Continue to watch this space! <3 Love, Juliana Disclaimer: Do keep in mind that reviews are entirely subjective. It is normal to have differing views so please don’t hate me if I didn’t speak well of your favourite product. I definitely have no intentions of distorting the image of any brand. Well, to each his own, isn’t it? Peace! #beautyreview #cosmeticsreview #foundationreview #beauty #beautytips

  • Travel Review: Favorite Beach Getaway – Bali’s Ahimsa Beach Resort Jimbaran

Apa Kabar Honeyz Bunnies! Today, I’m gonna shed the ‘Beauty Junkie’ and ‘Aspiring Fashionista’ personas and put on my ‘Wanderluster’ hat. (Ignore the lack of parallelism.) Yes. A travel review FINALLY. In particular, my favourite beach destination. Before I dive into this review, I decided to do a mini survey with my good girlfriends on where their favorite beach destination is. Here are the responses. Favourite beach destination: The Maldives Favourite beach destination: Six Senses Ninh Van Bay Favourite beach destination: Perhentian Island Favourite beach destination: Island of Coron Gorgeous choices, ladies. Here comes my choice…. Bali’s Ahimsa Beach Resort Jimbaran! There’s not a scintilla of doubt that this fine resort is my most favourite beach getaway. It is highly recommended on Trip Advisor and is ranked number one among twenty-three others under the ‘Specialty lodging in Jimbaran’ category. If you’re wondering what’s the big deal? Well here’s the biggie… Lobby (In the evening) I was greeted by the simple and tiny lobby. (Well… The ‘big deal’ is not exactly here.) Ok. Honestly, when I first entered the lobby, I wasn’t too impressed. In fact, I started to worry about the state of the villa. Could it be crammy and dull like the lobby? Wait for it… Wait for it….. (anxious tone) There you go! Boy was I wrong about the villa! It was huge and spacious coupled with a nice aromatherapy scent. Well, I guess the lobby was probably built small on purpose to give way to the huge villas. Villa (In the evening) Love the plunge pool! I just have to do this. A cute kitchen. Entertainment systems in the living room. DVDs may be rented free-of-charge at the concierge. There’s a garden in the bathroom! Isn’t it beautiful? Gotta snap a picture! Villa (In the day) I woke up the next morning to this. Breakfast was already prepared by the Ahimsa’s staff! Totally famished. Gobbled my delicious breakfast like a hungry monster. Villa in the day. Awww.. love the tranquility. Camwhoring in this beautiful villa. 😛 Ok. Lotsa camwhoring. I can’t help it! It’s not everyday that I get to lodge in such a beautiful place. Walkway to the lobby One last camwhoring picture? Outside the resort Heading out! Explored the hotel beside the Ahimsa Beach. Interesting monument Headed to the beach. Enhanced the colour slightly and it turned into this. Whoa… I came back later in the evening to this. It was a little surprise from the resort (as part of its honeymoon package). Can I bring this home? BBQ Lunch in the resort! I love my life! And a “live band” to go with the wonderful lunch. How good can this get?? A clarification. The ‘live band’ was not part of the package. I think it was 40USD per hour. The rates are available at the concierge and it’s based on availability of the musicians. I went to the shopping and entertainment spots nearby and it wasn’t that fantastic. I would suggest going all the way out of the Jimbaran area for entertainment (e.g. Rock Bar) or just stay in the hotel (It’s good enough. :P) For further information on the resort and its rates, you may consult their website at www.theahimsa.com . Here’s a little hint to my next travel review. As if it’s not obvious enough! Till next time! Love, Juliana #travel #resorts #ahimsabeach #beautifulvillas #bali #travelreview

  • Fashion Review: Agneselle, Love Bonito, Topshop

  • Fashion Review: Le Dezire

Honeyz….. I’m home! I’m gonna try something different in this post. No beauty reviews this time. Instead, I’m going to do a fashion review of online store, Le Dezire ‘s best sellers. Eunice, founder of Le Dezire, was kind enough to give me some of her signature pieces for this fashion review. You can’t believe how grateful I am as she only have limited pieces left for each of them. 😀 Anyway, instead of doing the conventional way, i.e. Pose in front of a mirror and take pictures, then write my afterthoughts (which was my initial idea), I decided to do a fashion spread kind of review with the help of some friends. 🙂 I’ve been a huge fan of fashiontoast.com and lookbook.nu for the longest time. The beautiful and artsy fashion spreads never failed to awe me (In a good way). So for this fashion review, I decided to try a ‘fashiontoast’ inspired photo spread. Here are the pieces Le Dezire gave me. Very pretty outfits eh? Now that you’ve seen the Supermodel look. Here’s the Mortal version. Enjoy! Noticed my sky blue nails in the photos? (Well, I hope you did!) Got them done at Nail Indulgence De Beau, No. 1 Liang Seah Street, #02-14. I enjoyed the warmth of their service. Very friendly and accommodating. You can contact them at +65 6333 1687 to arrange an appointment. 🙂 Photo Credits Photographers Samuel – The Seasoned Photographer Yong Thye – The Passionate Photographer Alex – The Noob-turned-Pro Photographer Models Pretty Judy She’s a UK 4, standing at 155cm. Lovable JW She’s a UK 6, standing at 153cm. That’s me. I’m a UK 6, standing at 161cm. I hope you liked the fashion spread. 🙂 Well, I thought it would be interesting to also show what went on ‘Behind the Scenes’. 😛 So here you go. Super Star Judy! Look at all those paparazzi! “Is my photo ok??” “I want to look that sexy too!” In the dressing room – All made up and ready for the photo shoot! On your mark… Get set…. Go!! ‘Photo-whoring’ while waiting…. More ‘photo whoring’… And MORE photo whoring!! Ok I think that’s enough. Soaking in the sun. Ok that’s a wrap! Greatly appreciated… Lastly, I want to thank SimVideo for their excellent photography and photo effects services. A renowned wedding and corporate photographer in Singapore and JB. And Le Dezire for their beautiful clothes. Thank you all for reading. See you and God bless! Love, Juliana #fashion #review #Photography #ledezire #fashionreview #photoshoot

  • Mascara Review: The Face Shop, Majolica Majorca and Sephora

In this 21st century, every woman seeks to strip away the cliches surrounding them. They’re vigorous and confident. And this is the spirit of ‘Honeyz‘. ‘Belle’ is a woman who’s admired for her beauty and charm. So a Honeyz Belle is a confident and intelligent woman of the 21st century who’s not afraid to express her desires, show off her charm and become the belle of every ball. I believe all of you is a Honeyz Belle so henceforth, I’m going to call you ladies ‘Honeyz Belles’! So Hello Honeyz Belles! As my blog title suggests, I’m gonna review THE imperative tool to pretty peepers – Mascaras. Check out their faux lashes! Mascaras are an important part of make up as they define our eyes and gives them that ‘little burst of energy’ to our otherwise dull-looking eyes. And whenever the topic of mascaras is brought up, I hear Loreal, Lancome and Maybelline being mentioned almost 90% of the time. So for this mascara review post, I’m gonna leave them out of the picture since we all know that they are good enough. 🙂 And review the underdogs instead – The Face Shop, Majolica Majorca and Sephora. The Face Shop’s Extreme Volume Mascara I started using this last year and have been loyal to it ever since. I love its non-clumping and lengthening qualities. It separates the lashes well and thus does not produce the ‘lump-of-lashes’ look. Best of all, this mascara is smudge-proof! 😀 Panda eyes from smudged mascara is definitely not a pretty sight (especially if you’re on a hot date) so this is an absolute hot favourite for me. The slight curvature of the mascara wand is also perfect for my oval shaped eyes. The Face Shop’s Extreme Volume Mascara Wand The mascara creates a soft and natural look that is great for daily activities such as work and school. Here’s how it looks like on my naked eye. Wearing The Face Shop’s Extreme Volume Mascara on make-up free eyes I like that it darkens and lifts my lashes slightly to produce this very natural look. Well, here comes the trubs. It is relatively difficult to achieve the really dramatic look even after a few more coats of this mascara. Here’s the example, After numerous coats of Faceshop’s Extreme Volume Mascara Not very impressive, isn’t it? So if you want to achieve those ‘Drama Goddess’ look with your eyes, I suggest you opt for falsies or simply purchase the Big Three’s mascaras and pound on the eyeshadows. * Big Three = Loreal, Lancome, Maybelline All in all, I like the great qualities of this mascara and its affordable price. (Johor Bahru’s Faceshop retails this at RM 45 which translates to SGD 18.) Majolica Majorca’s Lash Expander Frame Plus Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus ‘Majolica Majorca’ is quite a mouthful. I’m going to call it ‘MJ’ in this post as it’s famously known for. (No, not Michael Jackson’s acronym) MJ is a sub-brand of Shisedo and it’s much more affordable than it’s parent brand’s products. This is terrific news for most of us who can’t afford Shisedo’s luxe make up all the time. 😀 Ok here comes my review. I bought this product due to friends’ recommendations and its cute packaging. (I’m a typical girl, aesthetic qualities are extremely important to me.) I must say it’s pretty easy to apply and lengthens my lashes quite a bit with its fibers. The fibers were attached to the end of my lashes upon application and created this ‘longer lashes’ illusion. It has this gooey texture that does not dry up too soon unlike other mascaras. This allowed ease of re-application, which in turn reduced the clumping effect that re-applications usually caused. In particular, I love the design of the wand. Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus Wand As you can see, it has this mini comb on it that enables me to target even the tiniest lash. Great for application on the lower lashes too! Well, everything about this mascara is great but here comes the nightmare… The removal of the mascara. Removing this mascara was a huge hassle. It’s stubborn as hell! The fibers stick to your lashes like super glue and they wouldn’t budge even after much (gentle) rubbing with my make-up remover. Many times, I could still spot clumps of the remaining fibers on my lashes the next morning. I guess the excessive lengthening fibers isn’t such a great idea after all. Sephora Mascara Sephora Mascara This mascara darkens, separates and thickens my lashes pretty well. It has slight lengthening properties too. One plus point – its pretty easy to remove even with non-eye make up removers. Here’s a picture of the wand. Sephora Mascara Wand I did not like the wand though. It’s big and coarse and it irritated my eyelids a few times during application. I underestimated its frame. As such, I don’t think it’s suitable for Asian eyes. Another bummer of this mascara? Photo Credits to hollywoodtoday.net The panda eye look! I noticed bad smudging after hours of wearing the mascara. Very unkempt. In conclusion… I think the diamond in the rough is definitely The Face Shop’s Extreme Volume Mascara. I’m a no fuss person so I’m no huge fan of exasperating make up removing procedures. In addition, I don’t think any one wants to meet a big client or go on a hot date worrying about the state of her make up constantly. Removal and longevity of make up is extremely important to me. Once again, I’m going to end this post with some useful mascara tips for you beautiful ladies. Never try a mascara at a makeup store as there’s a risk of infection. To brighten the whites of your eyes, try using blue mascara. To prevent clumps, remove excess mascara from wand before application. To prevent smearing of mascara, dust a layer of loose powder under and over the eyes. Alrighty. That’s all for this mascara review. Thanks for reading. 🙂 I’m already preparing for my next post – A fashion review. I’ll be back sooner than you can say ‘Honeyz’! So watch out for it! Love, Juliana Disclaimer: Do keep in mind that reviews are entirely subjective. It is normal to have differing views. So please don’t hate me if I didn’t speak well of your favourite product. I definitely have no intentions of distorting the image of any brand. Well, to each his own, isn’t it? Peace! #mascarareview #mascara #Sephora #beautyreview #cosmeticsreview #MajolicaMajorca #beauty #Faceshop

  • Put The Roses Back In Your Cheeks With This New BlackBox Edition!

Roses – one of the most enduring symbols of love and beauty, are now also highly coveted for their multiple beauty benefits. How befitting! Their antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties make them perfect for treating an array of ailments such as burns, abrasions and acneic skin. Rose petals also contain efficient emollients for moisturising dry skin and refining skin texture. With all these amazing skincare perks, it would be a huge sin if beauty brands did not incorporate this elixir into our beauty regimens! So I got my very first taste of the ‘wonders of Rose Essential Oil’ through Blackbox’s Special Rose Dew edition . The set is comprised of the Real Rose Toner, Essence and Lotion which all contain high levels of Vitamin C and A to restore the softness and radiance of your tired skin. More specifically, it is made up of Rose Otto Essential Oil. The folks at Rose Dew pride themselves on their unique extraction methods, the result of which is a much purer product with less toxins and impurities, rendering it safe for use on our skin. To make sure the products do not deteriorate in quality and remain fresh for the longest time possible, the contents are also packaged in dark brown glass containers that block out light effectively. Talk about commitment! Well, I guess it’s about time to stop, smell and try the roses now. Click to join me! 😛 Blackbox Exclusive Real Rose Edition “Known as the “Queen of oils”, the Rose Otto Essential Oil has a high concentration of Vitamin C and A, which are effective in reviving tired-looking skin and restoring the softness of your skin.  Products containing Rose Otto Essential Oil are suitable for all skin types and helps to manage skin troubles to give you crystal clear skin over time. ‘Otto’ is one of the extraction methods where the goodness of the rose is extracted using steam distillation. Thus, the Rose Otto Essential Oil contains very little toxins.  Unlike other extraction methods, through this methods the product is safe for use on our skin and the entire range is paraben free.” – Rose Dew Here’s the rundown: Real Rose Illuminating Toner Real Rose Illuminating Toner | 100ml An aromatic blend of 100% rose otto oil and skin benefitting ingredients like aloe vera, allantoin and snail secretion filtrates. This gentle toner hydrates and revitalizes the skin. Retail Size and Price: 100ml, $42 Where to to get it: www.dermabiz.com.sg, OG People’s Park & Essentials Pharmacy My verdict: The first thing that greeted me when I unscrewed the bottle is this seal that protects the contents inside. I always appreciate beauty brands that go the extra mile to ensure the freshness of their products. Of course, the second thing that caught my attention was the aromatic rose fragrance. Take a deep whiff and you’ll feel instantly calm and relaxed too. Since the toner does not contain alcohol, it does not leave a squeaky clean effect on the skin. In fact, the product feels a little more viscous than normal causing the skin to feel slightly tacky to the touch during the first few minutes of application. Toners are meant to balance your skin’s pH levels and act as an astringent to minimise the appearance of your pores. Honestly, I don’t have have sufficient info to prove that the ingredients in this product will balance your pH levels. In fact, skin should be able to balance itself out so that’s not an issue. Also, since the product does not contain alcohol, it’s is definitely not acting as an astringent here. However, I like that the toner contains a beneficial array of skin-reparative and moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin, sodium hyaluronate and even snail secretion filtrates. So if you’re looking to amp up the moisturising factor of your skincare regimen, this is still a great product to add to your beauty stash. 3.5 Honeyz crowns! Real Rose Illuminating Essence Real Rose Illuminating Essence | 50ml Light nourishing beauty essence of 100% rose otto and plant botanicals strengthens skin barrier and results in soft radiant skin with daily use. Retail Size and Price: 50ml, $62 Where to to get it: www.dermabiz.com.sg, OG People’s Park & Essentials Pharmacy My verdict: The rose scent of the essence is a lot more prominent than that of the toner’s. Its consistency is also a lot thicker than the toner’s as you can tell from the photo below. Even though the essence is essentially a more watered-down serum, it still feels pretty concentrated and rich. My skin felt greasy immediately after application. However, the feeling lasted only seconds as the greasiness was quickly replaced by a smooth finish after a few gentle rubs. Just a few drops each time and my skin stays hydrated all day. I also use this on my neck to reduce the tight feeling on my skin after showers. 4 Honeyz crowns! Real Rose Moisture Lotion Real Rose Moisture Lotion | 100ml Uplifting aromatic blend of 100% rose otto oil and plant extracts, this fast absorbing moisturizer is for all skin types including sensitive skin. Its transdermal properties also leave a balanced feeling of toned hydration. Retail Size and Price: 100ml, $46 Where to to get it:  www.dermabiz.com.sg, OG People’s Park & Essentials Pharmacy My verdict: The terms lotion/toners/serums are practically interchangeable these days so when I first saw this, I thought it was a toner. Imagine my confusion when I saw the actual toner in the packaging. So what is this? After reading the label, I realised it’s simply a moisturiser. (Oh yeah! Long before the Japanese referred their toners as lotions, lotions were actually moisturisers.) The texture of the lotion is significantly thicker. Despite its higher viscosity, the product was absorbed by my skin pretty quickly, leaving behind a nice smooth sheen. Long lasting hydrating properties should be non-negotiable in a lotion and since the product delivered just that, I give it a huge thumbs up! My only gripe is the absence of a pump feature to dispense the product. This is what happens when I try to draw the lotion from the tiny opening of the bottle everytime. Besides the lack of pumping mechanism, the lotion works pretty well for me. Here’s a quick comparison of my face before and after using the Real Rose products. I thought the redness on my face is less noticeable now and my skin also looks more taut and supple. Now that’s what I call putting the roses back in your cheeks. 😛 3.5 Honeyz crowns! • Theresa Beauty LED Teeth Whitening Review

Beautiful hair, impeccable makeup and heavenly ballgowns are indisputably hallmarks of a Disney princess! Hmm… Seems like I got everything covered for the wedding. *happy dance* Oh wait? I think I forgot something. Aww… I sure did. Every Disney princess also has a lovely set of pearly white teeth to mesmerise their Prince Charming. If you’re a fellow city-dweller, you probably would find this all too familiar in the mornings – the alarm clock screaming in the middle of your sweetest dreams resulting in you waking up in shock and jumping out of bed to get ready while still feeling rather asleep. Come on! Who brushes their teeth with their eyes closed too? Then to fight off that doziness, you gulp down a soothing fragrant cup of coffee – EVERY weekday morning. And the ramification of that? Not only do you feel more alert, you’re also one step closer to looking like the Wicked Witch of the West instead. Gulp! So to make sure my bridal beauty routine did not go down in flames, I decided to seek the help of my dental Godmother,  Theresa Beauty , to help with the teeth discolouration problem. And guess what? In the space of just a few weeks, the change was remarkable! Hubby and I felt our gnashers could even be worthy of Colgate’s next toothpaste ad. Haha! Psst! You’ll be happy to know that there was no bleaching or abrasive ingredients involved in the treatments. Seeking a dazzling white smile too? Then you’ll have to read on! Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome by Sandra of Theresa Beauty who took care of all our treatments for the day. Our warm welcome included a nice cup of tea before all the magic began. Whoopee! Every treatment is preceded by a consultation session to evaluate the current state of your teeth and also to explain the procedures of the treatment. The Consultation Room Our tooth shade was measured based on this teeth color chart. According to Sandra, besides food and drinks that are high in tannins, aging can also cause teeth to yellow. As we age, the outer layer of enamel on your teeth gets thinner due to wear and tear which eventually unveils the natural yellow colour of dentin. And of course, other factors that affect the color of our teeth includes smoking, genetics as well as poor dental hygiene. Now, let’s assess our dental situation. 😛 My teeth was a Shade 14 before the treatment. While B’s at Shade 30 due to his uncontrollable love for Coke Zero. Tsk tsk! For best results, we were told we need to ‘start with a clean slate’. So we were given these cleaning wipes to remove all the gunk on the surface of our teeth. We were also given these cool safety glasses to protect our eyes from the light beams of the LED treatment later. Guess our new sci-fi hero! 😛 Cyclops of X- Men 😛 Thereafter, we were introduced to these tools to kick off our treatments of the day. 🙂 Sandra squirted the whitening gel, that was specially formulated by Theresa Beauty, on the mouthpiece before placing them in our mouths. And we went from looking like superheroes to the Titans from Attack on Titan. Haha! To be honest, I wasn’t the most comfortable due to a painful teeth whitening experience at another beauty salon several years back that left me wary of harsh chemical whitening treatments. Sandra assured me that the treatment would not trigger the same side effects I experienced before as Theresa Beauty’s whitening gel does not contain harsh ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide. In fact, its imbued with natural ingredients such as sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) which is also its key whitening agent. Besides removing stains, the gel can also neutralize and counteract bacterial acids in the mouth too. Yay! However, no man is an island. The gel needs to work in tandem with Theresa Beauty’s latest Light-Emitting Diode (LED) technology in order to react with the enamel, penetrate the pores and break down the discolouration molecules in the teeth. Hence, the next step was to place this LED device a few centimetres away from our teeth for 30 minutes. The blue beam would activate the properties of the gel and allow it to perform its task more effectively. And now we wait. 🙂 It was a rather comfortable process as you can probably tell from the photo above. I was falling asleep! The only thing I felt was the warm sensation from the light source. Okay, there was one thing that I didn’t exactly enjoy – the saliva gathering at my mouth throughout the treatment. The staff at Theresa Beauty assured me that it was perfectly fine to swallow my saliva but since I didn’t really like the idea of ingesting the whitening gel, I allowed it to accumulate in my mouth. Eek! To make sure I don’t stay uncomfortable for too long, our thoughtful therapists were already on standby with water and a tray, minutes before the treatment alarm on the LED device went off to allow me to discard the saliva immediately. And then, we were done! Well, I guess it was all worth it as my teeth was visibly four shades lighter after the 30 minutes treatment. And so had B’s. We were still five weeks away from our wedding so Sandra suggested that we come back for another treatment in four weeks to improve the treatment results further. And we did and guess what? My teeth is now at Shade 8. Whee! And B’s at Shade 16 – a whopping 14 shades lighter! • Forget About ‘Work’shops, We’re Going To A Beauty ‘Play’shop!

Being beautiful is as much about feeling good as it is looking good, that’s why the term ‘workshop’ never really resonated well with me. Come on, you’re meeting amazing people, pampering yourself and trying new looks! Does that sound like hard work to you? Beauty shouldn’t feel like hard work. Instead, it should be fun and make you feel alive. Henceforth, I will call these get-togethers playshops. We play with new toys and learn more about what we love! What more can we ask for? Booya!  Two weeks ago, Panasonic hosted an informative Beauty Playshop featuring their latest skincare gizmos as well as beauty tips from Celebrity Lifestyle Guru and Natural Therapist, Bryan Gan . Besides dispensing valuable Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) beauty pointers, Bryan also suggested many useful and out-of-the-box ways to create our very own home retreat. If you’re in need of a quick sensory getaway and true beauty fix all from the comfort of your own home, then you certainly have to read on! Your gateway to relaxing home treatments begins here. Meet our therapist of the day – Bryan Gan A little background about our host this morning: Bryan Lao Shi (老师 meaning teacher) started as a health and wellness blogger in 2001. He soon began to gain recognition for his tried and true holistic, natural treatment methods. On top of this, he’s also an aromatherapy enthusiast. Over the years, he has curated and shared many therapeutic home treatments that combine acupressure massaging with essential oils to help his readers relax, rejuvenate and even recharge. His passion and commitment really shone through and today, he’s a popular host on hit Taiwanese lifestyle variety show, Lady First (女人我最大) and a renowned beauty consultant for top celebrities. I’ve got you beauty lovers intrigued eh? Don’t fret if you missed the Panasonic gig because I’m here to recap the event and its helpful tips. 🙂 4-7-8 Breathing Technique Bryan Lao Shi commenced the playshop with the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique to help us relax, calm and de-stress before we began the day’s activities. It’s all about the senses, remember? Though it’s called the 4-7-8 technique, it’s actually as easy as 1-2-3! :p 1) Breathe in deeply through your nose for 4 seconds 2) Hold your breath for 7 seconds 3) Exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds Yup, in case you’re wondering, it is the same 4-7-8 breathing exercise that everyone has been sharing on Facebook. It is highly recommended by Dr Weil, scientists and people who’ve tried it. The technique helps to regulate your breathing, blood oxygen levels, reduce your heart rate and release special hormones which all lead to a calmer and more relaxed state as well as a fantastic night’s sleep. Even I’ve been using this method to clear my mind before I hit the sack every night. It works like a charm, I tell you. I’m a huge fan of meditation. When all else fails, close your eyes, empty your mind, aim for enlightenment. A zen-like calm will do wonders for your soul, ease the tension in those worry lines, ease away that frown, allow you to wake refreshed and ready to face whatever life throws at you. This is exactly why I’ve added the 4-7-8 technique to my meditation repertoire. Living It Up With TCM Bryan Lao Shi is also a strong believer of TCM and the use of medicinal herbs. I know some of you may dismiss such healing methods as ‘pure placebo’ but Bryan emphasised that he would only recommend products that he has personally tried and proven to be effective. Well, you can totally see that conviction in his eyes. Haha! His first endorsement at the session was that we make our own fresh Corn Silk Tea. He proposed drinking the tea a few times a week to flush out excess waste and reduce bloating. Do you know that inflammation is closely linked to cancer, heart disease and a multitude of other diseases? Well, then you’ll be happy to know that corn silk is anti-inflammatory. 🙂 It also helps to protect and soothe the urinary tract and kidneys, and lower blood sugar levels. To top it off, corn silk contains proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. It’s a perfect blend of goodness! Thank you Bryan Lao Shi for introducing this super ingredient to us! Now let’s make some tea! Simply shuck the corn, save the corn silk and brew it with boiling water. And here’s my Corn Silk Tea this morning. Yummeh! Check out my new  ‘Wake Up with Me’ video  to find out how I incorporated the tea into my morning routine. Other foods that received Bryan Lao Shi’s stamp of approval were White Fungus, Dried Longans and Chrysanthemum. White Fungus Bryan believes that white fungus can help to bring radiance back to the face and promote healthier lungs. Dried Longans He suggested boiling dark dried longans with red dates to create the ultimate remedy for insomnia and stomachaches. Dried Longans are rich in iron and fibre too so they make very healthy desserts! Chrysanthemum Finally, with Chrysanthemum, it gets a little tricky. Different types of Chrysanthemum serve different purposes and even the number of  Chrysanthemum flowers play a part. In summary, drink White Chrysanthemum (Baijuhua) to reduce eye dryness, Yellow Chrysanthemum (Huangjuhua) to treat headaches, Baby Bud Chrysanthemum to boost immunity and relieve stress and finally, Wild Chrysanthemum (yejuhua) to reduce heat, swelling and pain. Bryan Lao Shi recommends six flowers in every cup for best results. No more, no less! Beauty Meets Technology It’s a Panasonic Beauty Playshop so this means we also got to enjoy product demos by Bryan and witness first hand the effectiveness of the Panasonic gadgets. I used the Panasonic products according to Bryan Lao Shi’s suggestions. Check out my demos with the gadgets on my previous post –  Wake Up With Me . Create Your Own Sanctuary At Home Bryan Lao Shi came up with a pretty innovative way of using the Panasonic Facial Steamer to turn your home into an aromatherapy retreat. Okay, here’s the thing. Panasonic actually discourages mixing the water in the steamer with any other substance as it may cause burns, malfunctions and even shorten the life span of the machine. But! We really wanna enjoy those soothing essential oils like we’re in a real spa. So to counter that, Bryan developed a simple and effective method which I’m going to share with you in bit. First, here are the items you need: A cotton pad, scotch tape and of course, your favorite aromatherapy oil. All you need to do is to add a few drops of essential oil on the cotton pad, then attach it to the funnel head of the device. Turn on the switch and you’ll feel like you’re enjoying your steaming session in your own spa haven. Speaking of facial steaming, I know many of you may be wondering if steaming really helps to open the pores and dislodge the unwanted impurities. Or even worse, does it act like a total dehydrating agent and strip our skin completely of moisture? This brings us to the next segment of the post: Here Comes The Science Steaming and detoxing… Are they too good to be true? I’ve always been very conscious about my gaping skin pores so ever since I heard that hot water opens pores and cold water shrinks them, I hated myself for indulging in all those hot steam baths and began to attempt to ‘reverse the effect’ by gliding ice cubes around my face every morning. Haha! That was ten years ago. Now I know I can’t pit against the will of mother nature. And you should too. I’ve spoken to Dr Chia Hui Ling, Plastic Surgeon at KK Hospital and Dr Suzanne Cheng, Dermatologist at the National Skin Centre to clarify all these beauty myths about pores and detoxing. “Pores do not open and close. Anecdotally, steaming helps to soften the pore and hence, it becomes easier to extract the clogged debris. There is no evidence that we expel any toxins through skin, just sodium from perspiration. That said, steaming is not entirely pointless. The heat from the steam will help with vasodilation and improve circulation to the face.  The causes of enlarged obvious pores may be different for the young and old. Younger skin tends to have heaps of clogged pores from excess sebum secretion, while older skin may suffer from skin laxity resulting in pores opening up too. To tighten pores visibly, you’ll need lasers to improve collagen remodeling.” Chia Hui Ling Plastic Surgeon KK Women & Children’s Hospital MBBS (London) MRCS (UK) MMED (Singapore) “Pores or hair follicles probably do react slightly in response to heat.  And the condensate from steam would soften the epidermis temporarily, much like soaking feet before paring callouses. It’s a misconception to think that applying a mask or washing your face with cold water will “tighten” open pores.  To do that, you’ll need procedures such as Fractional Co2 Laser and Radio Frequency to promote new collagen formation. Finally, the skin does not eliminate toxins, that’s the job of the liver and kidneys.” Suzanne Cheng MBBS (London) MRCP (UK) Consultant Dermatologist National Skin Centre I hope that cleared the air. No facial steaming treatments or topical products are going to help you ‘detox’. The only way you can do it is through a healthy liver and kidneys. Remember to drink up, take a lot of fruits and vegetables and of course, rest well to keep your organs healthy. For added support to your detoxification programme, I highly recommend taking Milk Thistle supplements (especially if you’re partial to a lychee martini once in a while) as this supports the function of your liver which is responsible for producing Glutathione, the most powerful antioxidant in our bodies. A healthy liver means more Glutathione which in turn means you’re at your best in terms of fighting free radicals and other toxins. *If you’re not certain whether Milk Thistle is suitable for you, please consult your doctor.* So Is Steaming Still Good For Us? The answer is a resounding yes. Steaming only becomes dehydrating and damaging when you are exposed to it for too long. But if managed wisely, it can also give you intense hydration and replenish lost moisture. Skin also becomes more absorbent during steaming so this is the most opportune time to apply your skin care products. So how long is too long? Five minutes. Anything more and it’ll be a negative relationship where your skin loses moisture faster than it can absorb moisture. In conclusion, too much steaming is bad for your skin but used in moderation with your favorite beauty products, you’ll get the most effective moisturising treatment. A Different Kind Of Beauty Advice I know that nowadays you can find any information on Google. As such, many of us have become Google Scientists, proving our beauty theories with articles found on the internet. However, there are many articles and studies around, even those published on so called reputable platforms such as Pubmed and the Lancet, which may be inconclusive and erroneous. There are studies which are too small to be statistically significant, are flawed in terms of study methodology, and sometimes you even have to look at who’s funding the research to decide whether to take the results with a pinch of salt or not. This is why doctors and scientists in fact have to undergo training in order to be able to effectively ‘critically appraise’ research to know what can be trusted and what can’t. It’s fashionable these days to try and use science to decide whether a beauty product may really work or whether you might be just experiencing the placebo effect. Just remember to be prudent with the information you can find, in case the so-called facts lead you away from a beauty wonder to a beauty blunder. With a big thank you to OMY, Panasonic and of course Bryan Gan, I hope you have found this journey enlightening. Now we can all combine ancient traditional ideas with the latest technology to get the best of both worlds and reach for new heights of beauty. Aim for the stars belles! Great News Belles! • Wake Up With Me!

“Happy is the bride that the sun shines on.” Even though I got married during Singapore’s stormiest season, I was lucky it was mostly sunny on my wedding day last November. Wait what? Last November??! Can you believe it? Seven wonderful months have passed in the twinkling of an eye and we have already been married for more than half a year! Woo hoo! This definitely calls for a celebration. *pops champagne* So this weekend, we decided to pull back from our daily grind to indulge in a nice fancy dinner and toast to those beautiful memories as well as to making some new ones. What does this also imply for a (vain) girl like me? *sheepish grin* That I will need to look perfect for my date! 😛 Renowned author, Stephen R. Covey, once said we have to ‘Begin with the end in mind’ so today, I enhanced my beauty routine by starting the day right with a rejuvenating workout and wholesome skincare regime. Since it’s the Singapore Blog Awards season, I also received some pretty cool beauty gadgets from our generous sponsor, Panasonic , to incorporate into my morning routine. So are you ready to wake up with me ? Read on for your guide to a better and prettier morning! [df_divider el_width=”100″ style=”solid” accent_color=”#EEEEEE” border_t_width=”2px” padding=”20px 0″ position=”align_center” el_class=””] Everyday is a wonderful blessing… … especially when you wake up right next to this cutie pie over here! Haha! Ever wondered what the morning routine of a beauty blogger is like?I had an absolutely indulging start to the day. Catch all the morning action here in my new video – Wake Up With Me: Beauty Routine. Enjoy! Hope you belles had fun spending the morning with me! Bet you’re also wondering what are all those gizmos that I’m using. Well, there is actually a lot more to these beauty buddies than you might think. Let me elaborate further in this rundown of the items. 🙂 Panasonic Facial Ionic Steamer Ever since my teen years, I’ve been plagued by zits and congested pores. The ramification of that is nasty as I started developing incorrigible habits like overexfoliating and picking my skin. Yup. I was one of those compulsive skin pickers too. 🙁 That inevitably resulted in unsightly acne scars and even MORE pimples. My confidence plunged to an all-time low. Soon my mom decided it was time that I was introduced to the world of facials and steaming. I was addicted, I tell you! Especially to the smoothness of my skin immediately after steaming and painful extractions (the tears were worth it). Since facials are really expensive, we could only afford one session every couple of months. Not surprisingly, I got really impatient in between those no-facial months and started to develop my very own home steaming treatments with a pail of boiling water and my substandard zit removal skills. Those were NOT the days! :p Fast forward to 2015, Panasonic has come up with a perfect and affordable solution to extract the dirt and blackheads in the least destructive way. I know my 2001 adolescent self would be deeply grateful. Meet the star of the day – the Panasonic Facial Ionic Steamer. I know there are already plenty of facial steamers out there but what really sets the Panasonic steamer apart is its ability to produce ultra-fine, nano-sized steam particles. We’re talking about a whopping 4,000 times finer than regular particles here! These smaller steam particles penetrate our tiny pores more easily and eventually, supplement our skin with more moisture. I also like how the steam gently floats up to your face from below, especially since I’ve previously been scalded by falling drops of hot water from those professional salon overhead facial steamers. Traumatising experience!  Since then, I’ve always been wary of the quality as well as the position of facial steamers. Needless to say, I felt comfortable and safe when using the Panasonic steamer this morning. Keep your face at least 20cm away from the nozzle. Another plus point of the smaller steam particles? It now takes a fraction of the time to soften and loosen the underlying debris. Yay! After steaming my face for about three minutes, I was ready to get rid of the bane of my existence – the scores of tiny blackheads in my pores. Ugh! Since the excess sebum and gunk are now easier to remove, I no longer use an extractor tool for this procedure. Instead, I use a gentle scrub to exfoliate my skin after steaming. Here’s my choice. 🙂 Crème Simon Gentle Double  Exfoliation Facial Scrub Finding a good scrub is as tough as climbing Mount Everest these days. Most of them are too harsh and cause skin aggravation with the jagged edges on their tiny beads. When it comes to buffing the skin, it is important to select a product that’s gentle and imbued with nourishment from great ingredients. This is why the Creme Simon scrub is a winner as it deviates from the usual harsh contents of scrubs and uses emollients such as Jojoba esters and glycerin. As mentioned earlier, after steaming my face for a good three minutes, I began exfoliating with the scrub, this time keeping the nozzle of the steamer slightly further away at 30cm. The heat and constant massaging allowed the debris to dislodge more easily. And now all I have to do is wash my face with water, and voilà, soft supple skin! Sidetrack: You know what you’re doing is visually enticing when you catch your videographer secretly using the products while you go change outfits. Caught in the act! This is Yong Thye, my best friend and also the talented lad who filmed the scenes in my ‘Wake Up With Me’ video. This pictorial outtake is for real. I caught this big guy fiddling around with my steam machine and beauty products when I came out of my room. He said he could tell that I was really having fun with the products and wanted to try them for himself. His verdict – “I’m going to buy one of these for my mom and myself.” Psst! Guess who else has been secretly using my Panasonic Facial Steamer? 😛 Petite Amie, of course! Pictured above is our favorite bunny enjoying her mini spa treatment with the Panasonic Facial Steamer. Next up! Panasonic Facial Cool Putter After an intensive cleansing routine, let’s take our pampering morning routine further with a cooling face massage. As its name suggests, this Panasonic Cool Putter promises to help cool down the skin instantly with its 10°C cooling plate. You know, many celebrities and fitness experts have suggested inversion therapy to defy gravity and prevent our face from sagging. Since I don’t have an inversion table, I practise simple yoga poses like this below to reap all the beauty benefits of going upside down. However, inversion may not be safe or bearable for everyone so this is when the cool putter comes in handy. Massage your face with the Cool Putter in an upward motion for a couple of minutes daily to relieve tension in your facial muscles and prevent skin from sagging. The constant massaging will help you relax better and eventually, you’ll look more radiant and youthful! Exactly what I need this morning before my big date. I also need to diminish the appearance of my puffy eyes. Here’s my remedy – rub the cool plates gently against the eye bags to soothe and brighten your eyes instantly. Here’s a visual representation of my suggested application directions. And this is how you can enjoy the goodness of inverting without challenging gravity! It’s a pretty neat perk eh? Panasonic Warming Facial & Body Roller Squeezing Roller I don’t have the most flattering face shape so I’ve always used rollers to contour my jaw since I discovered them at Daiso many years ago. Panasonic totally brought it up a notch by introducing rollers with temperature settings and interchangeable heads to suit different purposes. I love the concept of a heater as the warmness increases blood circulation which in turn would help me de-stress and relax while I massage my face. In the long term, you know what that means – you get irresistible glowing skin! Whee! The product is also great for contouring the body. Since my dress for tonight reveals more legs, I also used it on my calves to make them look firmer and shapelier. Stroking Roller The stroking roller is effective on different parts of the face such as the mouth, cheeks, chin, forehead and even various parts of your body such as the stomach, collarbone and legs. I never liked massaging my face with my fingers as I tend to scratch my face with my long nails so this device is ideal for days where I’m in need of a relaxing face massage without the minor injuries. The best thing about a face massage is the warmth of the fingers and it’s nice that the roller replicates this with its built-in heating feature. And there you have it, my beauty routine for a superb start to the day. I hope the tips and products mentioned here float your boat too. And now I can’t wait to look perfect for my perfect man tonight! Whoopee! On The Next Post… I know that many of you may be curious if these products really do work, so I’ve consulted a dermatologist and plastic surgeon to find out more about their effectiveness and efficacy. Hopefully I will also dispel some long-standing beauty myths along the way. ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ Who you gonna call? Beauty Busters! ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ 😛 I also attended OMY x Panasonic’s Beauty Workshop hosted by Bryan Gan of Lady First (女人我最大) fame a couple of weeks ago. Bryan, a renowned Natural Therapist, dispensed many valuable TCM beauty pointers and suggested a slew of interesting ways to turn our Panasonic gadgets into the ultimate stress relievers. Yup! The beauty extravaganza has only just began! I can’t wait to share all these exciting tips and tricks with you. Keep your eyes peeled for my next post! Meanwhile… Yay! I made it to the finals of the Singapore Blog Awards 2015 ! This is my third time being nominated in the beauty category so I really hope third time’s a charm. 😛 I couldn’t have gotten here without you guys and I hope you’ll join me for this dance one more time to help make my dreams come true.
