First I divide my face into three parts, namely the forehead, cheeks and chin. Now we move on to the next facial treatment. I am as fascinated today by the Mexican holiday, Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) as I was 20 years ago when I chanced upon it in one of the Bookworm Club short stories. As you can imagine, the sugar skulls, chocolate coffin traditions and colourful images were all so enchanting and dare I say it, yummy sounding for little old me but it was learning the reasons behind the traditions that really made it all so meaningful. Now after all these years, I find myself reigniting my interest in the subject thanks to Disney & Pixar’s stunning new movie, Coco. A magical story about love and family, steeped in tradition and folklore, I found myself once again drawn into the sugar coated world of the Día de Muertos. The parallels of their traditions to our own Hungry Ghost Festival traditions made the story resonate with me all that much more. The imagery and unforgettable music respectfully woven around characters that you can’t help but fall for, this really is Disney and Pixar at their best! I can’t stress enough that everyone should go and see Coco! Your life will be all the better for it! See you at Coco’s official release on Nov 23rd! My eyes are already aching to see this in 3D! Good skin is the best foundation for your makeup. And it seems like that ‘foundation’ is slowly coming apart as things are really starting to heat up in the work department while I plan my projects for the final quarter of the year, fashions shows, products launches, photoshoots at my studio and writing up that next blog post. It’s literally full steam ahead. Mind you, I don’t really have to tell you as the condition of my skin is a surefire giveaway. My hats off to all you Wonder Women out there who manage to look fabulous while juggling career and family life; I don’t know how you do it! My skin feels tired, simultaneously flaky and oily, with laugh lines and necklines as deep as the Grand Canyon and unsightly brown spots from sun overexposure. If only there was some short cut to great, healthy and revitalized skin. But there are no such things as short cuts right? If it sounds too good to be true, then it must be right? Topical skin care products can only do so much to prevent my skin condition from deteriorating further down the rabbit hole. Given the lengthy list of media and video appearances I have to make in the next few months, I decided I need a more effective and quicker solution to address my problems. Enter  Halley Medical Aesthetics , a reputable aesthetic clinic nestled in the heart of town, amidst the hustle and bustle of shopping haven, Orchard Gateway. I decided to venture down to the clinic after a shopping retreat to learn more about their offerings. So did I get the ‘short cut’ I wished for? Read on to find out! I met with Halley’s head honcho, Dr. Terence Tan for my first consultation, an experienced aesthetic doctor who now specializes in aesthetics with a keen focus on non-invasive rejuvenating procedures and the latest medical technologies. I’ve never been a fan of invasive procedures; injectables and the like, so the treatments on offer sounded right up my alley. With several important events coming up, I made it clear that limiting post-procedure downtime was something of paramount importance to me and Dr. Tan assured me he had just the thing I needed in the form of the Fraxel Dual Laser treatment. I was informed that the downtime for the treatment is so impressive that I would in fact be able to apply makeup immediately after the treatment and step straight out of the clinics impressive central location and straight into my favourite shops next door. I was keen to know more before taking the plunge so I did a bit of research, AKA snooping around. The Fraxel Dual Laser resurfacing treatment works by stimulating the growth of new healthy skin cells from the inside out. By penetrating deep into the skin, it expedites collagen remodeling within the skin and thanks to its microscopic focus, surrounding tissue is left intact – which for you and me means rapid healing and recovery. The Fraxel Dual Laser has two treatment modes, which allow the laser to target both the surface and also the deeper layers of the skin. Treatment mode 1550 penetrates deep into the skin to help remedy acne and surgical scars as well as wrinkles whereas treatment mode 1927 targets tone, texture and more superficial signs of aging like unwanted brown spots. This is the treatment mode that was recommended for me. The laser can even be used to treat certain pre-cancerous lesions such as actinic keratosis and can be used safely not only on the face but also the neck, chest, back, arms, legs and most parts of the body. In case you’re wondering, it is actually very different from traditional fractional resurfacing lasers which are ablative by nature. Ablative lasers work by removing a thin outer layer of skin to achieve the desired result. But this results in a longer downtime compared to the Fraxel Dual laser. That is why the Fraxel Dual laser has won effusive praise as I’ve mentioned earlier, it treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, leaving the surrounding tissues intact and this in turn, promotes rapid healing. Now please follow me on a visual journey through my whole treatment process. If you’ve a low pain threshold like me, then this is your new best friend – the numbing cream. The friendly therapists at Halley Medical Aesthetics applied the numbing cream on both my face and neck and left it on for about 20 minutes. Since my biggest beauty nemesis is my obvious nasolabial folds, the therapist applied more around my mouth just in case Dr Tan needed to go over it a few more times than the other areas. By the 10th minute, I could barely feel my face. Yay! It’s working. Haha! So was the treatment painful and did the treatment live up to its impressive claims? Finally it’s here, a day I’ve been dreaming about for an entire year, a day that at times I really thought would never come – today marks the end of my home renovation! And I am literally over the moon! Woo hoo! It’s been a year, but it feels like my skin has aged five years with all the sleepless nights. That’s why, as the dust settled, I decided enough was enough and made my way down to Halley Medical Aesthetics to see if I was beyond help or whether there might be some hope for my barren wasteland of a visage. Eek! So this is where I left you last time with one lingering question, does the Fraxel Dual Laser treatment really work? Let’s find out! Now don’t be alarmed, this next picture may look startling to the untrained eye, but the scabbing that you see is in fact a key part of the healing process as your skin rejuvenates itself. As you can see, day by day, the temporary scabbing fades away to leave a youthful, smooth and clean visage as if your skin has been born again. There was minimal downtime compared to other traditional lasers I’ve tried. With some makeup, I was back in action by the fourth day. I could go totally makeup free within a week. Afterthoughts… Now it’s no secret that I probably have the lowest pain threshold in the world, so what was quite uncomfortable for me may indeed not be for you, but the experience was relatively bearable and I’m more than convinced by the results that it’s worth it. Of course, it’s also a big bonus that Dr. Terence Tan and his team of health assistants were there to reassure and comfort me every step of the way. They even gave me a teddy bear stress ball to calm the nerves. Talk about impeccable service! Dr. Terence Tan explained that over the first six weeks following on from my treatment, as the skin heals and produces new collagen, I would notice even further improvements and indeed I did. Brown marks continued to fade, my pores were visibly smaller and neck lines much less obvious. For the first time in forever (see what I did there), I find myself confident to even go out barefaced sans makeup. And so here I am, back at the cosy premises of Halley Medical Aesthetics for a final review with Dr. Terence Tan six weeks after the treatment. In case you’re wondering, that’s Dr. Terence Tan behind the lenses, doubling up as a photographer too. Haha! How multi-talented can he get! Jokes aside, now we get down to serious business and analyse the results. Here we go! I knew my skin condition improved but I didn’t realise the EXTENT of the improvement until we juxtaposed Dr. Terence Tan’s before and after photos. The results are astonishing! Fraxel Dual Laser Treatment Review It almost felt like I’d removed a veil covering my face and as you can imagine, the wonders it did for my confidence are beyond measure. Proof indeed that non-invasive procedures can really pack a cosmetic punch for those keen for an aesthetic uplift without going under the needle. I’m very happy with the current condition of my skin but would definitely consider going back to Halley Medical Aesthetics if I needed another facial pick-me-up.
