Live your life and forget your age. Because there’s a new anti-aging superhero in town! Meet Philosophy’s Ultimate Miracle Workers! Haha! So far, it seems like no one can escape the evil clutches of aging. Pfft! Well, that is until Philosophy’s latest discovery about the real guilty parties responsible for aging. According to the skincare experts at Philosophy, a huge proportion of aging can be attributable to the sun. Yup. I know you’re probably aware of that already but! But what about the visible light emitted from indoor lights and infrared rays from our electronic gadgets? The heat you feel from these devices indicate that there is infrared radiation present. Gulp! You’ll be happy to know that Philosophy’s new range is indeed a buncha hard workers as they are developed with an all-new full-light spectrum level of protection that raises the bar on sun protection in the industry beyond UVA and UVB protection to cover infrared rays and even visible light. They do this by introducing multi-protection technology. Okay, this is going to get a wee bit technical.  The system merges a patented antioxidant complex made of five highly efficient naturally derived ingredients (angelica, bitter orange peel, pongamia, green coffee and green tea) combined with Vitamin C and E with infrared red and visible light reflectors (Ruby powder, titanium dioxide-covered mica) along with broad broad spectrum UVA and UVB filters. Erm… that’s not all. This multi-protection complex is then integrated with their multi-rejuvenation complex which includes patented bi-retinoid and active plant cells from the iris flower to help improve the synthesis of collagen and rejuvenate the skin’s appearance layer by layer. Told ya these miracle workers were trying to cover all grounds. And now, here’s a quick rundown of Philosophy’s Miracle Worker products. 🙂 Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Eye SPF 15 (SGD90, 15ml) Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Lightweight Emulsion SPF 25 (SGD100, 45ml) Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Cream SPF 25 (SGD100, 60ml) Afterthoughts… I haven’t started using the eye cream as I recently developed a Chalazion in my upper eye lid, hence I’m avoiding all eye products until I get better. However, I did try the emulsion and cream. Well, I literally gave both a go at the same time . Bad move as I developed a slight reaction to the products. My face was all red and itchy like I had a heat rash. I didn’t realize it’s an ‘either or’ kind of situation where you can only use one product at a time. I always thought emulsions are serums that you use after your toner and before your moisturizer. Evidently, I was wrong. After some probing on the internet, I realized that emulsions are like an alternative to cream moisturizers for use when you want a lighter formula or if you’ve oilier skin. I’ve very sensitive combination dry skin so no wonder my skin reacted so ferociously to the products the first time. I was drowning it in rich moisturizers! Since I started using them separately, they’ve been the best skincare products I’ve ever tried. In terms of application, I’ll use the cream version when I’m home where the atmosphere is drier thanks to air-conditioning. When I’m out and about, I’ll switch to the emulsion since I tend to sweat more in our warm climate. The lightweight formula also makes it a perfect base for my makeup. Heretofore, my skin would still feel tight and dry even after applying moisturizers but these days, after using the miracle workers, it actually feels softer and more hydrated all day long. Yay! Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Night (SGD120, 60ml) This is an interesting product as it is the beauty world’s first serum-in-cream formula with bi-retinoid (hpr+) and active plant cells from the iris flower. It combines the concentrated power of a serum with the nourishing benefits of a cream to help stimulate skin regeneration, while helping your skin rebuild its natural collagen levels. What makes this so fascinating are these pearls within which the formula is packaged individually to maintain the freshness of the product. The pearls contain the serum made from the active plant cells mentioned above and the encapsulation protects the active ingredients until first use, allowing maximum skin performance. Amazing, isn’t it? Now let’s get down to business! After some twirling and swirling with my spatula, the pearls dissolved into the cream forming this light pink formula. It smells sweeter too! It might be the iris flower at work. It’s a flower after all. 😛 Honestly, with the jar packaging, I’m not sure if we’re getting the biggest bang for our buck as anti-aging ingredients tend to be become unstable in the presence of light and air, therefore degrading its beneficial properties. This literally means the whole purpose of encapsulating the active agents is very much null and void once we open the jar. I wish it came with a pump like the emulsion instead. Don’t forget the bacteria we introduce into the cream, everytime we dunk our fingers or spatular into it. As for the product itself, I actually love how fast absorbing it is. My skin actually feels less flaky after the first use. No major breakouts either. Phew! I’m actually looking forward to using this for a longer time to see more prominent results. Yipeee!!! You know what they always say – People will stare, so make it worth their while. Read on to find out why D’Skin could be your stairway to heathy porcelain skin! As you probably already know, most salons use standard salon brand products and tailor their treatments around the efficacy of the products. This is fine but in cases where you have more unique skin problems like sensitive skin, mild eczema or skin allergies, you might require a more careful selection of products coupled with more sophisticated treatments. As such, standard products and treatment processes may hinder the treatment results or even fail to tackle skin problems more efficiently. I was utterly impressed when the D’Skin therapists told me they had come up with their own line of products for their treatments. This is fantastic as they would know exactly what ingredients were used to produce the products and prevent any possible allergic reaction. They would also understand the efficacies of these ingredients and be able to better select the products that are in line with the objectives of their treatments. This makes treatments more effective and customizable to different skin concerns. To top it off, we can also purchase their range of aftercare products to complement the ones used during treatments. This means we can continue to benefit from the goodness of the treatments even when we’re at home! Another plus point that sets them apart is their consultation process. Most salons conduct their skin analysis through quizzes or visual assessment, D’skin takes it up a notch by introducing a standalone PC-powered skin assessment system called the Soft Plus. It analyses our skin’s pH, hydration, sebum, elasticity and melanin level to determine the appropriate treatment for your skin. Beauty tip! Always remember that a thorough skin examination is an imperative step before any facial treatment. You wanna make sure that your treatment does not aggravate any existing skin problems and is adjusted to your skin’s needs. I’m always a fan of facial salons that conduct a consultation and skin analysis before executing their treatment. If the salon does not do that and proceeds to give you a seemingly cookie cutter treatment, vacate yourself from the premises immediately! Back to my D’Skin review… The Soft Plus machine also takes into account your age to evaluate if your skin is aging faster than your actual age. This probe from the machine was pressed gently against my skin to check these various conditions – my skin’s pH, hydration, sebum, elasticity and melanin levels. From this, it shows that my skin is generally more hydrated which caught me by surprise because my skin is mostly dry and flaky. My therapist Carol, probed further and we realized the discrepancy was caused by the shower I took before the facial. Haha! So my skin appeared a little more hydrated and ‘normal’ during the examination. From the detailed assessment, Carol concludes that my skin is generally normal in terms of hydration, elasticity and keratin but problematic in the sebum control department. This comes as no surprise as I’ve always had visible large gaping pores but wait? What has keratin got to do with good skin again? After some googling, I learnt that keratin occurs naturally in our bodies and plays a big role in healthy skin. Naturally, keratin is produced by cells called keratinocytes, and just like collagen or elastin, this protein helps keep the skin firm and forms a protective layer to maintain healthy skin. This barrier helps keep out pathogens and helps minimize serious damage from other environmental factors. Since prevention is key to healthy skin, finding the best keratin treatment that has the right ingredients can help maintain the protective barrier to keep skin healthy longer. Whoa! I didn’t know keratin was so vital for healthy skin Enough introduction. Now let’s head to the cozy treatment room! Whoopee! Heated beds and leg pillows are always a good idea! To give you a better idea of my skin condition, here’s a rare ultra close-up photo of my skin. I think the key problems are clogged pores (Did you see that strawberry nose???), neck lines and dull skin. I’m happy with the freckles for now. 😛 Carol starts the treatment with a double cleansing routine to prep my face for the products later. To sum it up, she used a makeup cleanser to remove my sunscreen, then she exfoliated my face with a scrub and steamed it to loosen the debris on the surface. Now that my visage is squeaky clean, I’m ready for the most dreaded part of the facial – extraction!!! Eek! Hold on tight! To totally clean out my pores with an extraction tool will require a large amount of elbow grease. Remember the strawberry nose? So Carol applied a blackhead removal mask to lift up the blackheads on the surface first. The blackhead mask is similar to a pore pack except it does not leave nasty gum on your face and it is extremely effective in removing stubborn blackheads. Tadah! I hope I have not made you gag. 😛 The removal process was slightly uncomfortable but Carol made sure she did it slowly and constantly stopped when I cringed. But do bear in mind I might be overreacting since my pain threshold is pretty low. The feeling is like peeling a sticky scotch tape off of your skin so you guys may think it’s entirely bearable. Here’s my skin right after removing the mask. My skin is rather sensitive so it looked pretty red after the treatment. However, it also feels smooth and silky as my blackheads were completely stamped out. Well, at least that was what I thought. Carol told me there were still some large blackheads and whiteheads lying beneath the epidermis so we’ll still have to go through the traditional extraction step. Here comes the interesting part – Carol said the extraction process would be carrried out by a trained extraction therapist. Yes. D’Skin actually trains a group of therapists to specialize in extracting blackheads and the certified therapists are then assigned to different facial rooms to address their client’s clogged pore problems. My face looked as good as new after the process! Noticed the red marks on my chest? The therapist extended the treatment area to my chest to make sure these visible parts of me were not left out. Kudos to that! Remember this device from my Shou Bust Treatment ? D’Skin is the facial arm of SHOU so similar machines may be used for different areas of your body at times. In case you’re wondering – this is a safe and non-invasive procedure where light of specific wavelengths is delivered to the skin to stimulate and activate cellular processes deep within the skin layers. This increases the production of collagen and elastin. In other words, the treatment is performed using a form of light therapy (or photostimulation) which is notable for its high effectiveness with minimal adverse effects. Pictured above – Carol massaged my face upwards with the device for 30 minutes to lift and tone my saggy skin. Thereafter, Carol applied this ultra-moisturising mask to calm my skin down. Don’t worry, my skin isn’t melting like something out of a horror movie, that’s actually the replenishing mask. At this stage, therapists would usually leave you in the room for about 20 minutes, which is great if you’re sleepy, but if you’re not, it could be a major borefest just lying there counting the seconds. Just when I thought Carol was going to leave me in the room for her other chores, she stayed and began to give me one of the most soothing head and shoulder massages. I told you I went to beauty heaven during the treatments. The level of service here is phenomenal, isn’t it? Thereafter, Carol concluded the facial by applying some toner, moisturizer and one of their best selling products, the UV-Defense sunscreen that promises to block out 99.6% of UVA and UVB sun rays. My final look! Not too bad eh? With light: Without light: And here’s a more technical representation of my improvement. Hydration level is now at 100%! To help you recall, here’s my record before the facial and it was between 60% to 70%. Amazing isn’t it? Since then, I’ve been back many times for facials and each visit is as pleasant as the last. My mom says the best way to tell a good and bad facial spa apart is when the facial treatment extends to your neck and chest area too. Haha! It’s a weird gauge but I think it’s true. You know like how makeup experts always say don’t forget to put foundation on your neck and chest too as you don’t want the “floating head” effect. Well, when it comes to skin care, the same logic applies. And a good salon recognises this. This special device helps your skin absorb as much goodness from the products as possible. And guess what? The neck and chest were not spared! Haha! These days, I noticed my skin looks smoother and a little oilier. And if you think that’s a bad thing, you’re not quite right. On the contrary, oilier skin is actually a good thing because this means my skin is less congested now and the oil producing glands can function normally, allowing it to naturally lubricate the skin. This in turn maintains a healthy level of sebum, or natural oil. Your face needs some grease to keep the skin properly hydrated by preventing excessive water loss or absorption. This year, it’s all about red, red and more reds! *curtsies* If you’re wondering what’s the crimson brouhaha about, please allow me to explain. The Chinese believe that red symbolizes good fortune and joy. This is why you see red hues everywhere during Chinese festivals. My mom always says it’s a very auspicious color and if I wear red on the first few days of the Lunar New Year, I’ll “huat” (prosper) all year round. Even though we barely scratched the surface of 2016, it has already been a very rewarding year with our Disney-themed wedding being featured in major news outlets such as Refinery29 , Metro , The Knot and many more. I’m tired of waking up to my pasty morning face, under-eye bags and (eek!) listless eyes. You know what they say. Great things happen when you start your day on the right foot.  So I would love to get out of bed looking and feeling like Jessica Rabbit. 😛 And one simple way to achieve that? Get eyelash extensions! Since I discovered extensions, I’ve been feeling on top of the world every morning. Many times, my husband even asked if I wore makeup to bed. Haha! And guess what? Getting the sexy flutter is actually not that far-fetched if you engage the right people for the job. If you’ve been following me on my blog and Instagram, you would know that I’ve trashed most of my mascaras and even eyeliners ever since I started having individual eyelash extensions applied professionally by the lovely folks at Lolita Group. Read on to find out how you can also get beautiful natural-looking lashes without any daily hassle! It’s been two months since my last lash extension appointment with Theresa. Since I’ve been sporting a more dramatic look for two whole months, I wanted to go to the other side of the spectrum this time and try a more subtle and natural look. Hence, Lolita Group recommended their stylist, Jelina, a Certified Novalash Extentionist who’s been with the Lolita team for three years. Just like how scientists have different specialties and skills, each Lolita Group stylists also has their own different area of expertise, focusing on different looks. Jelina is a maestro of full, evenly-applied lash sets that look elegantly understated and perfect for the everyday look. Before the treatment, Jelina took some time to examine my eye shape and size to determine the most natural look for my peepers. Then she painstakingly applied about 80 lashes on each eye and the process took about two hours. The Final Result… My eyes were nicely framed with lashes of similar lengths and curls to create this natural fluffy look. No thick and luscious lashes. Just soft, thinner and shorter (8mm to 10mm long) extensions to open up the peepers and make them look brighter. To be honest, I almost went cold turkey on eyelash extensions as I have extremely sensitive eyes and they tend to become very red and uncomfortable after the treatments. I told Jerlina about my problem and she made sure she taped my eyes shut completely and used Novalash’s famed formaldehyde-free glue. Here’s a tip from a pro eyelash extension diva, wearing contact lenses during your treatment actually reduces the post-extension redness and soreness that may be keeping you away from taking the plunge. Now there’s really no excuses, get ready to flutter those lashes girls! Just take a look at these photos taken straight after the treatment, not a red eye in sight! Prepping for CNY… Sorry to love you and leave you, but you can bet that after this set of traditional daily wear extensions, I was ready to kick up the voltage to 11 for Chinese New Year! It’s no easy feat being a beauty blogger at Chinese New Year you know! Not a hair, nail or lash can be out of place. I kid you not, all the beauty microscopes come out and you bet it’s a daunting task but I was going in prepared. I definitely wasn’t going to take any risks for our big family reunion dinners, so founder of Lolita Group, Jocelyn took things into her own hands for this makeover. A NovaLash Certified Trainer and NovaLash Advanced Certified Extensionist, there’s literally no one better for the job, especially with the imminent extreme family scrutiny that was going to be coming over the next few days. So yeah, no pressure Jocelyn! 😛 As anyone in Singapore will tell you, come Lunar New Year it’s red or dead baby! So you bet I was super excited when Jocelyn suggested adding colour to my latest lash makeover. Working on from the 50% of lashes left from Jelina’s session, Jocelyn employed a refill to 6D volume lash extension technique ($189), meaning a whopping 6 lash extensions were attached to each real lash. Here’s a close-up of what was going on: The total lash count was an astonishing 500 volume lashes + 100 leftover lashes = 600 lashes (300 per eye). Only in the hands of a Jedi master like Jocelyn can you be assured that such a technique would look fantastic and flattering instead of the toothbrush on your eyelids look that might scare you on the streets from time to time. Jocelyn added a sublime red accent ($20) to my lateral lashes to add a really exotic flare, striking yet at the same time elegant. Et voila, here’s the final product, completed with their trademark formaldehyde-free adhesive, these lashes are shower, sweat, oil and heat resistant, non-harmful to your real lashes and can be refilled ad infinitum at the hands of a trained NovaLash certified lash extensionist. Jocelyn used curls C & D in thicknesses of 0.05, 0.07, 0.1mm to achieve this full flattering look. Dresses, hair, nails and finally lashes all set! I was ready to make an entrance at my family reunion dinner. So how did it go??? Haha!! Well, at least the lashes were perfect! Jocelyn also blessed me with a lash comb, a mascara safe for use on extensions and a alcohol-free cleansing pad kit, all of which means that although Chinese New Year may be over, my lashes are still going strong. But this outstanding lash makeover has left me with a genuine problem that I’m really not too happy about… How on earth am I going to top this next time??
