I entered the Java Detour premises and was immediately charmed by their intimate ambiance, delightful pastries and warm service. The cafe provides free wifi service so you can enjoy your nice cup of coffee while assessing the internet on your electronic devices. My face lit up when I saw the legendary Java Detour coffee on their brown walls. So before I sink my teeth into their delicious goodies, I decided to order something from their Coffee and Tea menu – a Green Tea Frappe to quench my ‘Java Detour Specialty’ thirst. 🙂 Hey! The latte was surprisingly good! Its sweet dairy taste was nicely accompanied by the strong revitalizing aroma of matcha (powder green tea). Aaah… Heavenly! My lovely afternoon tea session was also joined by these beautiful ladies – Grace and Karen . The food has finally arrived! Yay! Nom nom nom! First up was Roast Chicken with Green Apple Salad – SGD12.50 I thought the salad was rather exotic with a fruit and meat combo so I was slightly skeptical at first. But guess what? I was awed by its surprisingly sweet and stimulating taste. The chicken was lightly layered with balsamic vinegar so it oozed a nice aroma. I thought the delicious appley flavor of the crunchy apples also gave it a good refreshing twist! 4 Honeyz crowns! Next we were served palatable sandwiches as our main course. Bacon and Green Apple Sandwich (Customized) – SGD13.50 Feel free to customize your sandwiches at Java Detour too! This was originally the Roast Chicken and Bacon sandwich but we removed the roast chicken to taste the richness of the bacon. Well, also because we had roast chicken in our last dish. 😛 Anyway, the bacon had a rather strong flavor. I was glad it was not as salty as the ones I had before. Again, the crunchy green apple added a refreshing zest to the sandwich. For its tasty ciabatta and salt-free bacon, I award it 3.5 Honeyz crowns! Haha… I think I’m beginning to sound like a sandwich connoisseur. 😛 Next up! Smoked Salmon and Avocado Sandwich – SGD13.50 Wow! The smoked salmon was endearing and delicious! The smokey taste coupled with the fresh buttery flavor of the avocado made it the ultimate killer! I like how both flavors did not overpower each other but instead complemented each other to exude a unique and savory taste. I was also a fan of the baked edges of the bread which were pleasantly crispy. For its wholesome ingredients and splendid taste, 4.5 Honeyz crowns! Once we were done with our mains, we were swiftly served dessert that we selected earlier. Chocolate Therapy – SGD7.50 This cake was truly out of this world I tell you! I always thought it is a brilliant idea to ice the cake with dark chocolate ganache and place it on top of a yummy hazelnut crunch base. This cake did all of the above with perfection. 5 Honeyz crowns! Japanese Cheesecake – SGD7.50 I always have a penchant for cheesecakes so the Japanese Cheesecake definitely topped our order list. As I was looking forward to a rich and creamy cheesecake, its light flavor was slightly disappointing for me. Its redeeming factor was probably its velvety smooth texture. 3 Honeyz crowns! We culminated our afternoon tea session with some Assorted Mini Macarons – SGD10. Juxtaposed these baby macarons with their regular-sized counterparts for comparison. The mini macarons score in the looks and taste department. They had a softer and chewier center than the regular ones. Their outer layer was also crispier than usual. And I like that I can save calories and try a variety of flavors. 😀 4 Honeyz crowns! The sewing and seams were also very well-constructed which made me wondered – where are the threads??! The dimensions of the bag are 36cm x 27cm so I guess any 13-inch laptop will fit snugly. After slipping my Macbook into the bag, you bet there were still plenty of room for an iPad or some pens and a notebook. It did not look overstuffed or bulge with these additional items. Here’s a small downer though – because of its perfect fit, it is impossible to fasten the velcros. So to prevent your items in the bag from falling out, always remember to hold it up right. I also noticed that the velcros are pretty strong. I slipped my iPad and Harper’s Bazaar magazine into the bag and flipped the bag upside down. The velcro closures did not give way and still held my items firmly. The straps were thick and strong and they allow me to lift my tech essentials with much ease. Even though it comes with a rather hefty price tag (SGD106), its well-padded interiors, upscale design and durability have definitely won me over. I reckon that it can also fit most portable cameras and iPods well. My boyfriend thought the case is rather functional as he was able to slip it in and out of most of his pockets with ease. Denise believes that every client should be treated according to their hair texture and preference. So she decided to leave the country a few years ago to consult hair expert Jawed Habib in Mumbai on the proper styling techniques for Indian hair. How passionate! So there you go. After a few months of intensive training, Denise brought her vision for the salon to fruition by opening Jawed Habib Hair Salon that specializes in cutting and treating Indian hair in Singapore. Yay! Time to rejoice my Indian friends! 😀 So this was the condition of my hair on the day of the visit. As predicted, my hair was dry, coarse, slightly static and “headed for splitsville”. So it was important to use products that are nourishing and less harsh on my hair. Denise suggested using chemical free and anti-frizz products from Wella for my treatment. Because of its poor condition, Denise strongly discouraged bright colors or going for the ombre or dip dyed hair trend. So I chose my all-time favorite – the mousy brown hair look. Let the work begin! Denise went on to highlight my hair first. The foil helps Denise spread my hair strands evenly to create a mirror reflection effect which will produce a more blended and natural look. The whole process was very enlightening because Denise spent most of the time imparting wholesome hair care tips and teaching me how to differentiate between good and bad methods of hair styling. Check out that ‘attentive look’! Haha! Someone should consider casting me in the next Alien movie. With the drying hood over my aluminium hair, I’m affirmative that I’ll make a pretty good alien. Thumbs up for ear caps! After removing the hair dye, the chirpy Jawed Habib ladies dried my hair and applied the hair treatment cream on it. The treatment aims to soften my hair cuticles and seal in the moisture to leave my hair looking soft, smooth and shiny like I’ve just had a soft rebonding treatment. To speed up the drying process, the drying hood is ‘put into action’ again. To completely seal the moisture in my hair, Denise blow-dried my hair with the sticky treatment cream still on. Be warned that this process may be slightly uncomfortable for some because the process involves some tugging of the hair. Despite the ‘uncomfortability factor’, I was rather pleased with the results. My hair was significantly softer and less frizzy after the treatment. Here comes my most favorite part of the treatment – styling! I opted for natural tousled waves that I thought were great for a Friday evening out. And here’s the big reveal. I went from this in the day… To this! Even though the treatment took a whopping 5.5 hours, I was very happy with the results. I took several photos of my new hairdo that evening. I admired Denise’s positive attitude, dedication and passion towards professional hairstyling. She emphasized that bad hair styling methods will damage the hair and lead to hair loss so she’ll always ensure that her team is adequately trained and her products are carefully selected for maximum quality control. To Denise, her customers’ health and well-being are more important than running a lucrative business. Make sure the eye shadow is applied within the eye frame. 2) Then sweep your brush over the lilac shade and apply the color on the center of your lid. 3) Apply the purple shade on the inner and outer corners of your eyes to create contour. 4) Then line your water line with the deep-hued glittery eyeshadow. 5) Line your upper and lower lashlines with your Bourjois Paris Khol Kajal. Slightly thicken the eyeliner and wing it upwards on the outside of the eye. 6) Then complete the smokey eye look with generous coats of black mascara on your top lashes and bottom lashes. Beauty tip! Correct your makeup mistakes with Biore Cleansing Oil Cotton Sheets. I used the sheets to perfect my winged eyeliner and to wipe off excess makeup. 7) After applying blusher, I add a pop of color to the overall look with my Princess Pinki Magic Pink Cream. Be prudent with this one because the cream changes color upon contact with your lips and develops into a much deeper pink after a while. 8) I slapped on a little lipstick to enhance the intensive color of the cream. This Halloween, visit Singapore Flyer’s FrightFest 2012 for boooo-tiful and delightful trick or treating fun! So I invited my lovely parents and boyfriend to join me too! The lineup of the evening included Halloween themed games, a ride on the Singapore Flyer, ghoulish treats at the Flyer Lounge and of course the staple of the evening – a walk through The Undead Forest. This year, the Undead Forest is characterized into the Asian and Western zone. Over 20 scare crews will be lurking around to give guests a run for their lives. Characters inspired from popular horror movies/shows such as The Maid, The Walking Dead, Stephen King’s IT and Friday the 13th will be resurrected and waiting to spring a horror surprise to all within The Undead Forest. Chocgoji had a great balance with tasty wolfberries and aromatic chocolate working together. I love all three coats of chocolate but the most palatable flavor will have to be the sugar-free rendition. I thought it has the right mix of bitterness and sweetness. It was like playing Goldilocks where the milk chocolate was too sweet and the dark chocolate was too bitter and the sugar-free was just right. But don’t get me wrong. The other two flavors were pretty good too but since I’m no fan of sweet snacks, the sugar-free one naturally reigns supreme over the others as it was less sweet. The milk chocolate flavor was sweet with a hint of vanilla’s creamy taste. So if you have a sweet tooth, you’ll probably fall in love with this one. The dark chocolate flavor has a pretty intense bitter taste. Since the melting point is lower due to its small size, the bitter taste disappears within seconds as it melts on the tongue like a tiny ice cube. I also like the generous coat of chocolate on each berry. I’ve sliced the chocolate in half to show you the thickness of the chocolate. Overall, I think this is a delicious and healthy snack that is suited for all occasions. A big thumbs up for this great invention. 4.5 Honeyz crowns! As you can see, it is pretty difficult to miss Molly Roffey’s due to its conspicuous bright green doors, windows and pub signage. I walked into the restaurant and was warmly greeted by a very friendly-looking Wayne Rooney! Ok… it wasn’t exactly him in person. Molly Roffey’s hung a framed Wayne Rooney autographed jersey at the entrance of their restaurant. So remember to look out for the sports star jersey when you walk through the entrance of Molly Roffey’s! To stay true to the original Irish pub concept, the restaurant was designed with an Irish country influence – besides fake fireplaces, its walls were beautifully adorned with Irish bric-a-brac and the bar counter was furbished to resemble traditional Irish grocer’s shops. Molly Roffey’s completes your Irish pub experience with live musical accompaniment by their band every evening except Sundays. The well-equipped Irish pub not only provides refreshing and delightful pints of beer but also a relaxed ambience that is great for afterwork chill-outs. Don’t believe me? Check out the Irish Philosophy that was pinned to their charming rustic walls! There were also two huge screens in the pub that showcase top sporting events (mostly EPL) in the evenings. Gaelic decor and cozy ambiance was only part of the picture, Molly Roffey’s also offers delectable menu options for lunch and dinner. Lunch should always be a laid back affair and a treat. So before we were presented with the mouthwatering masterpieces, we were each served a refreshing and summery mocktail to relish and to cleanse our palate. And now that our taste buds are ready. Bring on the gourmet please! Irish Salad with Packham Pear (SGD11.80) The dish was well presented. Its most interesting feature was definitely the packham pear which was sweet and savory. I never knew pears can be delicious both raw and cooked. Crunchy leaves, cherry tomatoes coupled with mildly pungent blue cheese dressing is a food match made in heaven. 4 Honeyz crowns! Chicken Caesar Salad (SGD9.80) The ingredients used in this salad were pretty standard – romaine lettuce, bacon bits and classic Caesar dressing. The leaves were crunchy but the croutons were slightly soft. I wish they were more buttery and crispy. The ultimate savior of the dish was its aromatic Caesar dressing. 3 Honeyz crowns! Mushroom Medley Pizza (SGD13.80) Mushrooms aplenty! The pizza tasted as good as it looked with juicy mushrooms as toppings and nicely charred crust. I’m a big mushroom lover so this was definitely my numero uno favorite of the day. To top it off, I prefer thin crust pizzas to thick crust ones so this mushroom baby scores another bonus point from me. 😛 4.5 Honeyz crowns. I’m not biased, even my lunch companions agreed that the Mushroom Medley Pizza deserves an encore. Buffalo Wings (SGD7.80) The buffalo wings tantalized our taste buds with its sweet chili sauce. Despite the rich coat of sauce, the texture of the drumlets were still crispy. I thought this made a fun and delicious lunch snack! 😀 3.5 Honeyz crowns! Irish Stew (SGD15.80) The food was elegantly presented with the warm lamb stew in a sleek ceramic bowl and toasted garlic bread nicely stacked on a plate. We were all huge fans of the tasty lamb cubes and juicy simmered vegetables. The broth was also a winner with its gravy-like texture and rich flavor. I’m drooling as I type this! 4.5 Honeyz crowns! Spaghetti Aglio Olio (SGD10.80) Sink your teeth into the tender yet crunchy prawns with this pasta dish! Yes, I thought the star of this dish was its extremely fresh and flavorful prawns. I also like that the Aglio Olio was not too spicy and the pasta was soft and smooth but not mushy. It’s an ideal afternoon staple I tell you! 4 Honeyz crowns! Fish & Chips (SGD10.80) Honestly, there was nothing out-of the-ordinary about its ingredients. The winning factor was actually the citrus-based sauce. Dip the lightly-battered snapper into the specially formulated garlic-lemon cream sauce for the best of this traditional UK comfort dish. 3 Honeyz crowns! Carbonara (SGD10.80) After the highly commended Aglio Olio, we felt inclined to give another pasta dish a try. The folks at Molly Roffey’s highly recommended their Carbonara pasta which was rich in garlic cream sauce, nicely mixed with diced ham, mushrooms, bacons and seasoned with onions. In my opinion, the Carbonara did not exactly live up to the Aglio Olio’s standard because the sauce was slightly bland. However, the generous amount of ham makes it a great dish for protein lovers. 3 Honeyz crowns! Sweet and Sour Fish (SGD9.80) Molly Roffey’s pays homage to Southeast Asia by also offering Asian cuisine in their restaurant to cater to local tastes. These special dishes are available daily from 12nn-5pm and the menu changes every week so you’ll never get bored. This week’s Asian dish is the lip-puckering sweet and sour fish with rice. Even though the deep-fried fish was heavily covered in thick gravy, the fish was not soggy and remained crispy for quite a while. 4 Honeyz crowns! Psst! For SGD9.80, you also get a nice entree, soft drink and dessert on top of the main dish. Irish Bread Pudding (SGD7.80) Here comes my most favorite part of the meal – dessert! I absolutely love the vanilla ice cream which carries a grainy texture and a milky taste. Not a huge fan of the pudding which was hard and a little too sweet for my liking. 3 Honeyz crowns for this dessert! 4 Honeyz crowns for the ice-ceam and 2 for the pudding. So I guess the average rating of the dessert is 3. 😛 Here’s what I think about Molly Roffey’s Irish Pub… I thought Molly Roffey’s made a great effort to retain the Gaelic flair with its delectable Irish cuisine served in a traditional Irish pub setting, though with a slight modern twist. Well, the twist being their improvised Asian menu and spacious dining area that is not commonly seen in pubs in Ireland. In case you’re wondering, the main feature of Irish pubs is their large bar counter and bar shelves that usually take up the majority of the space in the main bar area which leaves little room for their customers. So I’m not complaining about Molly Roffey’s extra space. 😛 All in all, a great restaurant and pub that offers good food, good fun, impeccable service and everything that you need for a relaxed evening. 4.5 Honeyz crowns! So after all the trials and tribulation of seeking for better skin, I’ve finally found a handful of products that can combat my complexion conundrum and which I absolutely can’t live without for now. DHC Deep Cleansing Oil Featured in Honeyz Golden List Do remember to remove your sunscreen every night as it will prevent your skincare products from being absorbed properly. To make sure that my sunscreen is thoroughly removed, I use a oil-based makeup remover to rinse it off. My most favorite is the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil as it is gentle on my skin and it removes my stubborn makeup quickly and efficiently. Victoria’s Secret Pure Seduction Hand And Body Cream Don’t forget your body! Having healthy and glowing skin on your body is just as important. So I’ll usually moisturize it with Victoria’s Secret’s Pure Seduction Hand And Body Cream. It not only softens my dry and rough areas, it also leaves my skin sensually scented. I also love the fact that the scented lotion is sensitive-skin friendly too. Fruit Of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel When all else fails, I go back to the basics with my Fruit Of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel. The gel treats almost everything – from dry skin to sunburns to abrasions. Its emollient properties makes it a great moisturizer and body lotion too. The best part is – it is extremely affordable and easily available in local drugstores! Well, we’ve come to the end of the list. I hope the above tips and reviews were useful for you.
