I knew this CNY would be different, being on 24-hour standby in case any patients called RESCU  – would I still get to stuff my face with pineapple tarts or lose my life savings playing blackjack? Lo and behold! It was honestly one of the most rewarding CNY celebrations I’ve enjoyed in many a year! While I’m definitely looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store for me, CNY is not over yet! Now let’s keep scrolling and enjoy some final nuggets of joy from this year’s celebration! I hold Christmas and CNY very close to my heart, what can I say, the nostalgia of all those childhood memories get me every time as I try to relive some of those family memories and traditions while creating new ones each year. It’s our first CNY running our house call medical service so we literally had no idea whether anyone would call but they did and we found ourselves seeing families, uncles with flu, aunts with tummy pains and even one granny who had left hospital to come home in time for CNY because it meant that much to her! Driving home at 5AM after seeing a little baby with a stubborn fever in the early hours of day two of CNY, instead of feeling exhausted, I felt humbled and exhilarated by the rewarding experience of being able to help people with RESCU. I never in a million years thought that one day I’d be driving around Singapore in the wee hours of the morning, entering the homes of strangers trying to help people, but now that I have, it’s definitely a new CNY tradition I’d like to continue. Tiring? Possibly. Worth it? Definitely! But the icing on the cake for me was of course spending time with family! My family has been nothing but supportive throughout it all and we even celebrated CNY early so we could continue running RESCU during the festive season! Travel does the heart good. Here are a few tips on how to make the most of your city-exploring in under 24 hours! Take A Few Moments to Plan Okay! So you’ve decided that you’re going to ditch the airport or your hotel room and see what this mysterious new place has to offer. You might be in a total rush to get out there and explore. But if you want to make the most of the limited time you have, you should take a few minutes to make a game plan. First, you need to determine the basic characteristics of the area. And we’re calling it the “Dreams Really Do Come True” Cinematic Wedding Trailer which gives you a glimpse of the key events of our nuptials such as the traditional Chinese tea ceremony (spot the Hello Kitty tea set!), our Disney-inspired ensembles, the legendary Sleeping Beauty Castle cake and the various Disney ornaments and decor. Of course, we can’t forget the ‘Fairytale-Gone-Wrong’ gatecrash mayhem that the groomsmen had to go through. Haha! Also, I want to give a HUGE and special shout out to my amazing bridesmaids, Ashlyn, Jo, Jeslyn, Tiffany and Alice for investing an enormous amount of your precious time to plan the Hens Night, gatecrash and practice the surprise dance for B. You even offered to pay for the limo! *sobs* Thank you for being so supportive all the way and making sure that everything is in keeping with my Disney theme. You are the best bridesmaids, friends and sisters! But! I regret to say that we’re no longer Best Friends Forever (BFFs). Because we’re now Best Family Forever! Love you all! And to Bobby’s Wolf Pack (Band of Brothers), I can’t thank you enough for flying all the way to Hong Kong and throwing an incredible bachelor party for B (AND making sure that it did not turn into another episode of The Hangover :P) as well as for enduring the heat at my corridor in your suits while acceding to all my bridesmaids challenging requests! If a wedding is a glass of champagne, then the wedding venue must be the glass! Haha! So you bet, the search for the venue has been bittersweet – sweet because it is where we’re gonna host our fairytale nuptials but bitter as luck hasn’t been too kind to us. Think unwarranted price hikes, slow responses and inadequate seating capacities. The scouting trip began with some highly recommended venues by expatliving.sg , perfectweddings.sg and the ows.com.sg (Outdoor Wedding Specialist) and after much deliberation, we finally found THE ONE! Whoopee! I’ve written a short account of my experiences with each venue we approached. If you’re hunting for the ideal reception venue too, this post might be a pretty good guide. My fiancé and I love a good view so we decided to skip the traditional hotel ballrooms that are usually encased within upholstered walls and choose venues that are above the “vertical limit” with glorious floor to ceiling views. Haha! Our first choice – Salt grill & Sky bar @ ION Orchard Image credits: chope.com.sg “Way up high on the 55th level of ION shopping mall is Salt grill and Sky bar, a 6000 square foot space helmed by celebrity chef Luke Mangan. In the main dining area, which has floor to ceiling windows, guests can enjoy views of southern Singapore while being served contemporary Australian cuisine.” – Expatliving.sg This was THE place where our love flourished two years ago so my fiance and I were pretty adamant that this was the perfect venue for our wedding. Moreover, I thought the endless slope from the bar to the restaurant would make a splendid wedding aisle – it’s like you’re descending from heaven! 😛 Image credits: http://www.affluent-media.com So we emailed the venue and this was the information that was given to us: Maximum capacity – 100 -140 To seat 140 people, the restaurant would have to remove all their chairs and tables and bring in banquet chairs and tables which are smaller in size. Removal of furniture is from $1800+ (depending on the number of furniture) and hire of furniture is at $10+/chair and GSM $35+/table. The number of tables needed would be about 25. Luncheon timing – 11.30 to 3pm (They would need the restaurant back by 3:30pm.) Degustation menu – SGD140++ per pax. To include drinks is another SGD50++ per person. Additional costs involved to hire AV equipment and floral arrangements. Honestly, the total cost way exceeded our budget but we decided to go ahead with the booking because we just couldn’t resist its breathtaking panoramic view of the city! The enquiries were made in the last week of August 2013 and we emailed the restaurant on the first day of  November to confirm our interest. Alas, we were presented with a slew of bad news – the restaurant would be undergoing renovations in early 2014, prices had increased ($150++), post renovation seating capacity was unknown and even the menu would be unknown until closer to the date! 🙁 The uncertainty did little to invoke our confidence in the place that would be forever in our memories as the home of our wedding. Despite this very bad news, we still insisted on going ahead but were told to wait till the end of February (when the renovation is completed) to confirm our booking. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Finalising venue details in February is seriously cutting it too close for a November wedding with a lot of places already being fully booked. Finally, we bid ION adieu and continued our wedding hunt elsewhere. We’re still very keen on a high rise wedding venue so we decided to pay 1-Altitude a visit. We’d been to their rooftop bar and were absolutely mesmerised by their posh ambience and sparkling skyline view. We googled the establishment and found this description on Yoursingapore.com . “Occupying the three topmost floors of the 282 metre One Raffles Place Building, 1-Altitude comprises of three very different concepts—an al fresco gastrobar called 1-Altitude Gallery & Bar on level 63; an European restaurant named Stellar on level 62 and a sports bar named 282 that comes complete with its own golf simulator on level 61.” Stellar sounded like a pretty good option so we decided to explore their restaurant. Upon arrival, we were (honestly) pretty disappointed. Image credits: http://www.o-o.io We expected the same lavish settings as Salt grill & Sky bar @ ION Orchard – spacious premises and floor to ceiling windows with a picturesque view. But we got none of those. The place was… well compact with uncarpeted floors that made the restaurant look somewhat lacklustre and canteen like. But we thought since we were already at the restaurant, we could still try their food. Who knows? We might still be impressed and book the venue! So we went on an impromptu dinner date! 😛 We ordered their tasting menu and selected four items including two appetisers, a main course and dessert. I remember the main course and dessert were extremely mouth-watering but their appetisers were only so so. My least favorite was this breaded foie gras dish. The fried bread was bland and the paste surrounding it was too rich for my liking. That was two months ago but we heard Stellar just went through a revamp. The photos here were pre-renovation so they could be better in terms of decor and menu now. But since we had limited time, we decided to move on to the next potential venue. We finally ditched the sky-high venues and began to explore other scenic venues. And this was our third choice – Catalunya, introduced by a good friend of ours. I went there with my good friend Rusty and she too agreed that the glass enclosure feature is magnificent! Check out that view! We visited Catalunya on a busy Wednesday evening and indicated our interest in booking the venue for our wedding. Even though we did not make any prior appointment, we were still given a mini tour by their friendly staff. 😀 At this point, I was absolutely willing to trade my skyscraper view for this enthralling panoramic waterfront view but… They could only accommodate 90 seated guests, significantly below our planned number of guests. Sniff. Since this also fell through, the search continued. We celebrated our sixth monthiversary at The Jewel Box’s Black Opal and we were very impressed with the unique hilltop dining experience, the consistency of the quality of cuisine served as well as the impeccable service rendered by their staff. Hence, we decided to now approach The Jewel Box. I had read about some of their wedding packages online and enquired whether they may be amenable to the idea of giving me free corkage (trust me alcohol is expensive business and can effectively double the cost of a banquet so look for free corkage whenever possible).It was two weeks before I heard anything back from Jewel Box, which seems like an eternity when you’re pulling your hair out trying to settle a venue. I finally received a polite email congratulating me on my forthcoming wedding. It was a nice email but a little too late. Read on and you’ll know why. 🙂 As more and more time passed, a sense of desperation started to set in. We knew that a lot of places had already been snapped up on our auspicious date and wondered whether our fairytale wedding would be just that, a fairytale never to come true. My fiancé started to cast his net wider and chanced upon a website specializing in outdoor and specialty weddings in Singapore. I had a look at the site, not really expecting much, but found my interest awakening once again as I found more and more venue choices. I tried not to get my hopes up too much, but a certain restaurant by the name of 1-Twentysix caught my attention. Gone were the lofty heights and vistas of 1-Altitude and Salt Bar. The photos showed me something else. A charming, romantic, outdoor garden-esque venue, like something out of, you guessed it, a fairytale!! Image by Singapore Brides. I wasted no time and quickly dropped them an email. Much to my surprise I quickly received a reply to arrange a meet up to discuss things further. Suddenly from a snails pace, things were moving up a gear. I was still trying not to get my hopes up too much. The very next week I went with my fiancé to meet Beth, an events planner for 1-Twentysix and I must say, what a breath of fresh air it was to finally meet someone who seemed as passionate and excited as we were. We were shown photos and given suggestions, we even discussed wedding cakes that I had in mind, all of which Beth assured me would be possible through their wedding cake specialist. These were the cakes we showed her. 😀 My fiancé and I dined at 1-Twentysix from their Christmas set menu and the entire experience was just first class! Before we knew it, we found ourselves handing over a deposit for what will be, I hope, my dream wedding. With a change in management and following fresh renovations, 1-Twentysix has now been renamed Cotton . New management and renovations means new policies and unfortunately higher prices, but thanks to the miracle that is Beth, the original price point was honored (unlike a certain other restaurant we visited). Additionally, loads and loads of amazing services were also included in the package, all courtesy of the wedding planning services at Cotton. Our final package includes: pre-dinner canapés for the solemnization, 5 course fine dining meal, experienced wedding planning services, specially designed signs for the event, professional band, flowers and decoration of the venue, custom made 3-tier wedding cake, provision of ang pao box, 4-tier champagne wedding fountain, wedding cards, free flow soft drinks, 30 bottles of wine, 3 bottles of champagne and free corkage! Wow! All at the same price point as most of the other venues we had looked at. Trust me, I am not being paid to say any of this; I am genuinely ecstatic with everything we have received from Cotton. We set out originally with a classic fairytale ball theme in mind, but having now found Cotton, we have changed our theme to that of a secret garden fairytale wedding. A magical concept that I can’t wait to share with you in more detail in future posts. It has been quite a long and tumultuous journey to reach this point but the best really does come to she who waits. When Bobby and I were planning our wedding two years ago, we were adamant that it would be a small and intimate wedding of not more than 150 guests. However, as the wedding date drew closer, we realised that 150 was not a realistic number. Well, we know we shouldn’t change horses in the middle of the river but do we really want to leave out a good friend that has unwaveringly supported us in the past year or that auntie who used to babysit me when I was little? Before long, we found ourselves calling our wedding planner to expand our guest list further. And since we’d be having a few more esteemed guests, this meant we needed another table with its own Disney theme. We covered most of the iconic Disney Princesses for the other tables. For this new table, we thought we could bring in another Disney story that is close to our hearts – Walt Disney’s canine classic, Lady and the Tramp. Even though it was a last minute request, we were immensely grateful to our wedding planner, Beth, who managed to pull it off and actually made the table the crème de la crème of all our Disney inspired tables. In retrospect, even though it was extremely stressful to create a new theme and source for new decor two weeks before the wedding, we thought this was one of the best decisions we’d made for our wedding. I sincerely believe there is no other video company out there that would have accommodated all my zany requests in the way Sim Video has. Whether it was out in Paris taking photos in the wind and rain, or filming a Disney style epic, Sim Video has time and time again surpassed all my wildest expectations. They’ve captured and immortalized moments that I will always treasure, beautiful memories of the best day of my life, moments that I can share with my family, friends and even my children next time. And now, let’s scroll down and see how YT tackled our puppy fairytale. 🙂 Fun Fact! After 30 minutes of coaxing our bunny, Bebe, with baby voices and cookies to stand up for this photo, we were tired and at the brink of giving up when all of a sudden, Bebe stood up for one second! I was extremely glad YT was already on standby and was able to capture that magical moment. Even though my hair was in a mess, I was happy we got the priceless shot above. 😛 One of the most memorable moments in the movie is the serenaded spaghetti dinner where Lady and Tramp fell in love at the alley behind Tony’s Restaurant. So we decided to take some alleyway shots at Universal Studios Singapore (USS) to commemorate this iconic scene. *wink* This next collection of photos was taken by Ada and Aki of A Square Visual Studio . They feature a new form of photography known as ‘Indie Pop’ (aka 小清新) which is a blend of dreamy and quaint photography styles. This form of photography was incarnated by the the ‘Indie Pop’ culture of the the UK music industry in the 1980s. It was popular for chronicling the little things in one’s life through refreshing, gentle and positive music themes. Later, this interesting sub-culture expanded its influence to the movie and photography industry. A few photography houses in the region have jumped on the bandwagon and adopted this new style of photography and one of them is A Square Visual Studio. And here’s their take on our Lady and the Tramp story. Welcome to another instalment of my #Bobbliana Secret Garden Fairytale Wedding – Winter Is Coming. No surprise which Disney Princess this edition was inspired by. 😛 Do you know that our favorite Ice Queen almost didn’t make it to the list as Bobby and I had already started allocating our quintessential Disney heroines to the different wedding tables in late 2013? At least that was what we thought, until we realized we would really miss out a ‘queen-tessential’ Disney fairytale when Frozen was released later that year. There was no way we could slot in another table of 10 so we thought the best way was to integrate the Frozen details into the decor and wedding cake. You bet when our wedding planner, Beth, promised that she could do a winter-themed edible (mind you!) Disney castle wedding cake with LED lights installed, we almost fainted with excitement. It was a triumphant moment for our Disney-loving hearts. Now, I just need more icy blue colors, snowflakes and crystals to amplify the Elsa effect. Well, what better way to do it than to add it to the actual wedding dress! Woo hoo! Now the wedding is really oozing with winter vibe. Read on to find out more about our Frozen-inspired wedding! The Look Elsa’s signature long braids and alluring purple eyes are the key makeup inspirations for my evening look.In particular, her hair crown that is styled in an effortless and easy breezy manner which is simply to die for. To make sure my makeup artist, Joanne  understood what I wanted, I showed her some real-life examples: They are super Elsa-inspired and wearable on my big day. I was glad the talented Joanne immediately understood what I wanted and we met up at my place for a makeup trial to try the look! Barefaced! As for the makeup, I wanted a more natural look inspired by Korean celebrities so Joanne went light handed on the application and created this ‘barely there’ look for me. I loved it as like Kate Middleton – I want my groom to be able to recognise me on our wedding day. 😛 Next up! The Elsa hairdo.*exciting* I loved the look but I thought the braids could be a tad looser and more relaxed. Well, it’s called a makeup trial for a reason. I was glad I was able to build my rapport with Joanne and test-run a few looks before we decide on the final makeup and hairstyles. Joanne took my preferences into account and modified my Elsa look. I can tell you the final look was simply awe-inspiring. Well, you’ll have to read on to see the what she created for me. All I can say is – she’s a genius! You want her at your wedding! 😛 Meanwhile, I also introduced her to another favorite Disney princess of mine for the morning ceremony. Tadah! Belle’s luscious locks are gorgeous but to recreate the same look in real life might look too dramatic. See what I mean? So I showed Joanne the following hairstyles for a more realistic Belle hairdo. And this was what she did for me. 🙂 I love it! My happy smile here says it all. My Prince Charming and I at our Secret Garden Fairytale Wedding. 😛 Finding an experienced and trust-worthy bridal glam squad can be one of the toughest parts of wedding planning. I’m super thankful I found Joanne who ensured that all our worry lines were banished to the enchanted forest with her top-notched makeup skills and her incredible ability to understand what I want. Thank you Joanne. I’ve actually engaged Joanne again for my aunt’s upcoming wedding this December. Woo hoo! Can’t wait to try more new looks with Joanne! I knew the moment I laid eyes on Keanu Chang’s opulent bridal boutique that I would be getting my wedding gown from here. His grand yet elegant designs simply make you feel like a real princess! Trying on Keanu’s gowns, it hit me for the first time that I was really getting married. I figured I should see other boutiques and try other gowns, but despite everything we tried, neither my hubby nor I could forget the very first gown I tried on at Loov Production. Now the choice was obvious. We returned to Loov Production and Keanu welcomed us with warm open arms. The very first gown I tried became the piece-de-resistance for my actual wedding day. Before I knew it, my main bridal gown, my tea ceremony gown and my final march-in gown were all from Loov Production. 😛 Time to pick the ultimate Elsa-inspired dress… Here’s my choice! Elsa’s glistening cape and sheer mesh sleeves looked perfect in the movie but I reckoned it would probably look too much on my small frame in real life. So when I saw this beautiful dress that fitted my minimalist criteria, I literally went coconuts! The glistening snow effect from the sequined bodice and organza flare exuded the right amount of elegance that even Elsa would be proud of. After several alterations, the dress finally fit me like a glove! Your “Icy Enchantress” is ready to roll! Haha! It would be a shame if I do not mention Keanu and his absolutely incredible service. He customized my gowns repeatedly and allowed me to bring my dream wedding to life. Each visit to the boutique made me feel like a little girl again, a little girl dreaming of her perfect magical wedding. It was so enjoyable that even my hubby would accompany me to each and every visit and gown fitting session. My dreams were coming true. The Wedding Spot Elsa! 😛 On the day of the wedding, Joanne gave me the loose soft braids I wanted. That’s not all! She also adorned it with some beautiful crystal butterflies to marry both the Frozen and Secret Garden Fairytale themes. Ethereal! I couldn’t ask for a more amazing hairdo than this. To amp up the ‘Frozen factor’, we also bought this gorgeous crystal bouquet from Crystal Wedding that looked absolutely breathtaking in real life. The crystal bouquet certainly gave my Elsa look that extra oomph. 😛 Cheers to a beautiful winter ahead! Well, it was November. Haha! The bride has gone bonkers. 😛 Elsa’s shimmery purple eyes were the talk of town when the movie was released so Joanne added some purple and pink frost to my eyes to pay tribute to Elsa’s beautiful Snow Queen look. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any ‘decent’ close up photos of my makeup except for these not-so-flattering photos taken during the speeches where I was laughing like mad or crying my eyes out. Haha! Here’s the back view of my braids and oh!
